    Report on-board Skylark

Unfortunately we haven't been out for a couple of days due to the strong winds from Storm Lillian

Today the winds had settled a bit and we managed to get a 8hr and 3hr trip out

The 8hr started off fairly slow with just mackerel coming over the rail as the tides increased we managed to get a few cod, Ballen wrasse and pouting.

We did get a lonely Pollock on the 8hr trip aswel but mackerel we quite sparce with only 40+ caught in total.

The 3 hour trip we managed to get two nice size Pollock around the 4lb area, a few small codling unfortunately we didn't see any mackerel this trip. But the customers did manage to get a glimpse of a bottle nose dolphin, 3 harbour porpoise feeding and also a few seals.

We did do a third trip as the sun was setting with the Skylark Family as we heard about dolphins traveling south from ravenscar.

As we left the harbour heading north we came across them in the North bay and ran back to the harbour steadily at 2 knots with the dolphins all around us. This was the skippers 4 year old daughters first time seeing them at sea.

    Report on-board Skylark

Hour and two 3 hour trips

Very strong south westerly winds today so most of today's fishing had to be close to the cliffs to avoid the winds as much as we could. Sea conditions were quite flat just a bit splashy and white water in areas where the wind could funnel through the land.

On all the trips we fished a similar area which overall produced loads of mackerel and a good amount of Pollock.

We tried many techniques throughout the day from drifting with lures to anchoring with bait when the wind freshened. Both techniques worked fairly well with neither really having a advantage apart from avoiding the mackerel with bait.

While at anchor we manage to catch other species like Ballen wrasse, pouting and coalfish as well as a few Pollock.

On the drift we mainly caugh mackerel and Pollock and a lonely weaver when had a tangle and drifted off the rock a fair bit

Majority of the anglers today were first time anglers which seemed to enjoy the mixture of fish.

    Report on-board Skylark

8 hour and 3 hour fishing trips

As the tides are now building we travelled inshore traveling to the marks we passed several porpoise surface on the drive and again further up the coast.

Plenty of mackerel been caught we moved to several marks and unfortunately we just couldn't get through the mackerel to catch anything else after several moves around we ran offshore to a inshore wreck as the tide was becoming slack water inshore.

On the wrecks we still were catching the occasional mackerel bit we did get some nice Pollock aswel as the tide turned the wrecks became unfishable with the drift speed rapidly increasing.

We then ran back inshore which like before we were plaged with mackerel and the occasional codling

The 3 hour trip we ran inshore as the winds had picked up a lot more.

Fishing was instant with plenty of plump mackerel coming over the rail. Shads seamed to keep the mackerel at bay and did manage to catch Ballen wrasse and codling.

Yesterday we had Brian Cunningham’s team of 4 on chartering the boat for themselves.
Tomasz joined them too for a run out as they had come short.

As usual we stopped off for a few Mackerel at the bouy which were plentiful for the lads and after just a couple of drops we had enough for the day.

We ran straight back to the grounds we had worked the day before which were showing signs of a decent fishing shaping up.
    All change again!
We worked it for an hour or so and only managed a dozen or so fish there.

Slack water was around 11.0am so we dropped into the West a couple of miles and had a go at a small piece of wreckage.

It fished quite well for an hour and the lads took around 25 fish from it with Cod to just under 7lb.

It’s great when we are running with a light team as it gives young Fergus and me a chance to have a go too.
I was working a blue and white 4” shad and took a couple of nice Ling from it.
    Love a Ling curry!

We finished the day off on another strip of ground just 7 miles from port and took another dozen fish there. The day finished off well really and the lads were all well pleased with the results.

A few fresh Mackerel at the bouy to take for the BBQ’s before finishing and the day was done.

Thanks to Les, Eric, Sped, Mick and Tomasz for your great company as ever.

    Cheers
    Rich

    Photos from todays 8hr trip

We started off just outside the harbour for a few mackerel which finally seem established. We quickly filled a few tubs for bait for the rest of the day.

We then ran offside with the winds and tide being favourable for wreck fishing.

First drift produced a couple of nice size cod and after a few drifts fishing dried up so we ventured out to another wreck. This seamed to be the same for most wrecks with a few fishing better than others.

Overall all the lads took home a really good stamp of cod with most been around the 5lb to 8lb area with very little codling making a show.

The angers also had a few strappy ling but today's focus was mainly for cod, one customer seamed to get some coalfish around 3lb area.

Best rigs today was baited Muppets and hokkais, with shads also working well.

Hopefully lots of happy anglers who have tried other boats recently and were really happy with the trip we provided. Glad they gave us a try and hope to see you all again soon

17 Aug 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

I had a group of my Saturday regulars on today. It’s always really enjoyable for me to have regular anglers aboard. Firstly, they’re always excellent company and secondly, they’re good anglers, so I can base my angling decisions on whether they’re catching or not.

Today we had a slightly larger tide (4.7m). The W/SW winds were forecast to be a touch stronger, so all in all, I left Whitby without a real plan for the day.

We clonked a load of Mackerel at the Bell Buoy in about twenty minutes, then went to a nearby wreck to see how it looked for drifting. The lines were running back a touch with the fresh offshore breeze, but when I checked with the anglers, they said they were paying off very little line which was encouraging. We fished two nearby wrecks for absolutely nothing, then had a couple of drifts on rough ground for one undersized Codling. It was decision time…..

I spoke with the boys and we chose to run south to try some different wrecks in the same area we fished yesterday. Thankfully, the breeze dropped away as we steamed down and the drift wasn’t bad at all on the first wreck we fished. Unfortunately, we lost more gear than fish we caught. After four drifts, we pressed on.

It was a day for bait fishing today. Most went with 16oz leads on muppet bait traces, baited with Squid and/or Mackerel #standard We took a few fish off the next wreck and then it died off; and that turned out to be today’s pattern…..catch a few, then move on. One thing that was different from yesterday was the lack of strap Ling we caught. We got pestered by them yesterday, but today we took more Codling than Ling. We wreck hopped for the remainder of the day, taking fish here and there. The average size was much better than yesterday, but the overall quantity was nowhere near as good. Quality not quantity it would be fair to say.

Steve Martin took the biggest fish of the day. Firstly he snapped a 12” inches off his rod when he got stuck in a wreck. Then, despite the offer of using one of my rods, he cranked up a 13lb 12oz Cod! Well done Steve.

  • 17/08/2024 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

17 Aug 2024 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

After gathering the Mackerel yesterday morning (which were a little scarce at first) we decided to have a change in direction and used the Ebb tide and headed out North.

First wreck was just over an hour away and after being left alone (to my knowledge) for a week or so I thought we would have done better than just 4 Codling boated.

We skipped out Eastbound then to a bigger wreck.

The conditions were absolutely perfect for it, and with a nice neap tide falling away to slack water for 11.0am, I was confident we would see a few fish there.
Again, I reckoned this wreck too had been left alone for a good while.

My confidence was soon shattered and after a half dozen drifts across it we had only taken half a dozen fish!

I’d been chatting to a fellow skipper on the VHF who was working a few miles North of us and he said he thought he water looked very green and cloudy.
It was the same where we were, so move number three was in order directly!

We slithered back into some ground for a change of scenery and the marks on the sounder were very encouraging indeed.
Plenty of feed marking and even a couple of Whales in the area too.

The lads dropped in, and the first drift over a 2m ledge produced a couple of fish straight away.
A nice Codling and a Ling of around 7lb too.
The Codling clean and fair on a Shad too.

We picked away on the ground marks for the rest of the day and the lads gathered around 30 fish there, which kind of saved the day for us.

Nice to see more fish falling to the Shads again too. Some clearer water there for sure.

A really great day out with great customers.

    Cheers
    Rich.

  • 16/08/2024 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

16 Aug 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

One out of three ain’t good……

I haven’t posted individual reports from my last two trips because quite simply; the fishing wasn’t very good and we only caught odd small fish. The lads who were on the trips fished hard and I did my best to find a few, but it just wasn’t to be. Strap Ling around 3-5lb were the mainstay with an odd Codling and Pollock. It got to me a bit in the end and I know I wasn’t my normal self, as I hate it when I can’t deliver for the anglers. It felt like every decision I made wasn’t the right one and if I didn’t have bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck at all!!

Thankfully, today saw an improvement with a bit more consistent sport. With it being a small tide we were destined for a day on the wrecks. I opted to run south and try a few down past Robin Hoods Bay. The first one we stopped at gave us one, two or three fish each drift for an hour. Quite a lot were undersized Ling, but there were a few better ones among them.

Most of the lads were using fresh Mackerel fillets or squid and Mackerel combo’s on muppet traces. I saw a couple of sets of Hokkai’s go over but they just got attacked by the Mackerel. Shads did produce a few fish, but it was probably a 50/50 ratio of foul hooked to hooked fair and square. The water still has a funny green colour to it and visibility doesn't appear to be very good. After a couple of less productive drifts, we moved on and that formed the pattern for the day.

We fished four wrecks in total and caught from them all. Slack water was around 1100hrs and with a bit of SW wind, we kept moving throughout, which helped keep the bites coming. The last wreck we fished is one of my favourites and today it didn’t disappoint. We only had time for half a dozen drifts, but it did 4-6 fish a drift until the wind pepped up a bit and spoiled the drift line.

Ian Kellock was top rod today and took a fish almost every drift, all day. Biggest fish fell to Peter Burton, a Ling of just over 11lb, which had the remnant’s of a set of Black Hokkai’s in it, which someone had snapped off on recently! Most bizarre capture was Len Brumwell with a Scallop which clamped on his bait.

Thanks for a great day lads and restoring a bit of my morale. Onwards an Upwards.......hopefully things keep on improving.
