Report on-board Skylark
Well it's been quite a while now since our last catch report. Today was our first trip out with passengers after a refit.
View Boats Page
Photos from today's 8hr trip and 3 hour trip
Nothing huge on the 8hr trip but plenty of activity keeping the rods bouncing away
Loads of ballen wrasse and pouting caught
As well as a good amount of pan size cod and pollock.
We did have a few big mackerel too heaviest fish on the 8 hour trip was a 5lb 2oz cod
Great to see a young angler return from last years 3 hour trips taking on a 8hr trip and really getting into fishing.
Our first 3 hour trip of the year
Started off slow catching a few just size codling which were returned and mackerel
We also had several ballen wrasse and pouting
Then a 9lb 1oz Pollock jumped on the line
Another really good trip with mostly new anglers who I believe are all now hooked themselves. -

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
It’s been a while since we’ve compiled a report. Primarily because of the big Spring tides recently which thankfully have left us for a while.

Today we had a mixed group on board with some new faces which was good to see.
The Mackerel fishing is well and truly alive now, and with some “clonking” fish around we really don’t need that many in numbers to have enough for the bait stocks for the day.
One drift of just a couple of minutes and we had enough!
First stop offshore this morning was a wreck around an hours steam from the harbour.
The lads picked just half a dozen from that one.
A short 5 minute hop to the next one where they picked up just 2 fish.
We moved into the West a few miles then and tried a few wrecks in close proximity to each other. A poor result from those with just 4 fish off 3 wrecks.
I decided to move to some ground /reefs next and we found a little “nest” of fish where the lads picked around 8 fish up (6 of them being Ling) with one slightly better fish of just under 10lbs.
The last drop of the day was on a tiny piece of wreckage that seldom gets touched, and we rounded the day off with half a dozen from that one.
A request was made to have a stop back at the bouy on the way back to port to try for some fresh Mackerel to take home and, after just a couple of short drifts, the boys were well and truly stocked up with them.
A cracking calm and warm day on the water, which resulted in around 35 keepers for the lads which isn’t great I know, but combined with lovely Summer weather, made for a lovely day.
Cheers
Rich.

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
The 2024 Summer angling competition effectively came to an early end on Saturday, as we decided as an association to cancel the last day for inclement morning weather.
View Boats Page
A NW breeze on the increasing tides would have made it nigh on impossible to fish.
We had a mixed group on on the penultimate day and we didn’t fish very well at all to be fair.
The Mackerel fishing to start the day off for the bait stocks was great but after that we literally picked a few fish up here and there.
First stop was the 9 mile area where we had taken a couple of decent fish the day previous.
We only managed a couple of fish there.
We tossed the coin and voted to run out to a wreck which has historically thrown a few competition winners out over the years.
We took just 8 fish from it and none of them were anywhere close to being contenders.
The next wreck was just a half hours steam away and we hit it at a perfect slack water.
Lines straight up and down for the first few drops and the lads picked a half dozen from it.
As the tide bent through and the boat started to cross it on a more natural drift, we took another half dozen or so and that was it. Again, no contenders for the prize sections.
After another 3 of 4 moves towards end the day off we only saw another couple of fish boated and we called it.
Tally of just 30 fish for the day.
Best fish for us on Saturday, a Ling for Henry of 9lb 10oz.
A lovely day out on the water with great lads and we thank you all for joining us.
I’d like to congratulate my lifelong friend and skipper Kev Marsden on winning this years Summer competition on his boat the Jean-K, with a cracking Ling of 15lbs 11.5oz.
Well done mate!!
Some Seriously big Spring tides now so a few days off for jobs and some motorcycling! ️️
Cheers
Rich

Apologies for the delay in the catch report …..Saturday saw the lads from The Keel Inn Fishing Club aboard. A day I really look forward to, as they’re all brilliant company and the p**s taking is relentless and brutal in equal measure!!

It was the last day of the Summer Competition and with a 16lb fish required to get in front we had a couple of options. With it being a 5m tide, we would usually split the day between wrecks and rough ground. But with very light winds and not great numbers of fish showing on the rough ground, the lads were happy to fish the wrecks all day in the hope that a better fish would come their way.
With the tide being fairly slack, we started on a wreck just over a mile from the pier ends straight away. We got a couple of fish every drift, but they were just strap Ling in the main. We then moved out to the rough ground at three miles to try for some Mackerel; which turned out to be patchy, but we got enough to get us going. Whilst drifting the rough ground, we noticed that despite the predicted tide, nobody was actually paying out line on the drift and they were all fairly vertical. That was the decision made, we opted to commit and run South to have a go on the wrecks for the rest of the day.
We were pushing the Ebb tide but thankfully, there were no boats ahead of us, so we could pick and choose the wrecks which suited the drift the best for the whole day. The Ebb tide produced fish off every wreck, some more than others. Tog Edwards managed to find the biggest Codling of the day at 5lb 8oz and Gaz managed a 10lb 6oz Ling. The fishing was far from fantastic, but that seemed to be the same across the board when speaking to the other Skipper’s.
When the Flood tide came through the sport literally dried up. We took only a handful of fish for the last couple of hours and unfortunately, the monster we were searching for didn’t materialise. The lads fished hard all day and whilst they fish hard, I will never stop trying. Thanks for a great day out lads.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

We decided to give them a run out to the “Wall” for the day and play around on the rough ground.
The picking was only steady to be fair but rather than chasing around all day we chose to stick and pick.
A couple of fish a go and up to 4 some drifts gave the lads a reasonable show at the end of the day.
Fergus’s filleting skills were required on the return back home and he reckons they’d had a couple of full boxes between them so around 150lb of fish.
A nice few different species too yesterday with Codling, Coaley, Haddock, Acadia redfish, Ling and of course the usual pest fish in Whiting and Pouting.
The majority of the fish falling to the artificials with the 4” shads and sidewinder lures doing the business.
Great to see you lads and we’ll see you again next year.
Cheers
Rich

Blimey! Two days on the trot!!

Most unusual this year.
Yesterday we had a good mixed group of lads on board, six of them regular Shy-Torque customers and two pairs of newcomers who were made most welcome aboard the boat.
We gathered the bait for the day with a steady 10 minutes Mackerelling and headed out NE to a couple of the more offshore wrecks which, like yesterday’s, hadn’t been touched for over a week.
The first one kept us busy for a nice steady couple of hours or so until at slack water, things slowed up and the fish went off the feed. 30-35 keepers though, which was a decent enough start for the lads.
Everything falling to the fresh Mackerel and squid.
We had a short move then to the next bit of scrap which to be fair, only chucked around 4 fish out.
Back to the first one then for the start of the flood tide and with the breeze holding the boat off it nicely, we picked another 8 fish from it.
By this time the pesky SE breeze was drawing down and we decided to finish off on a couple of inshore marks where, on the second drift, Ivan Davey hooked into something a bit better. A Ling which was nudging around 14lbs which we thought might have had a chance for the daily prize.
It missed by about an ounce at the weigh-in!
Unlucky Ivan!
Another nice day on the water with the lads and a real pleasure meeting Shaun and Wayne from Nottingham and Ed and Adam from Scarborough.
Hopefully see you all again soon.
Cheers for now,
Rich.

Such a great feeling getting back to sea yesterday after a week off for rubbish weather.

Cliff Atkinson and his four mates from Cumbria had the boat booked for the day.
Just love those light crews. Oodles of space!
We stopped off for some Mackerel first where the lads picked around two dozen fish which was plenty for the five of them for the day, along with the squid bait they’d brought.
We then marched out to a nice big wreck North of the harbour to start the work.
After a weeks rest out there I was really hoping for some good results but we only took around a dozen fish there, Shaun taking four of them himself. He was off to a reasonable start.
Cliff took a nice Codling, a shade over 9lbs.
The fish only had half a tail and we wondered if it had escaped the clutches of a seal maybe sometime.
The next wreck we dropped on was in to the West a few miles.
This one produced a similar result for the five.
Shaun managed to a Ling just over 7lbs from this one along with another couple of fish.
Everything so far on the baited rigs.
We then dropped back South a couple of miles and tried a small wreck which lays in some ground.
Again, just a handful of fish from it and again, Shaun taking the most! He really was on it today!
The last drop we had was just three miles East of the harbour where, yet again, Shaun took the only fish from it! A couple of Pollack. Someone was certainly looking down on him yesterday!
Total tally for the day was around thirty five fish, with the usual returns, of which I reckon good old Shaun would have had fifteen of them. A lovely day for him on the fish.
No big fish to contend with the leader in this year’s Summer competition but a cracking day afloat with great banter and some fabulous sunshine for a change!
Great to see you lads,
Until the next one.
Rich

It was fantastic to get back out to sea today.

Gary Grantham and five friends had the boat booked for the day and they’re always excellent company a decent anglers to boot. With it being a small neap tide we ran out to a patch of rough ground to try and catch a few fresh Mackerel to supplement the Squid. After around 30 minutes we only had 20 or so, but couldn’t afford to waste any more time……we had some “wreck hopping” to do!
We opted to push the tide and try some wrecks south of Whitby which I always enjoy fishing, especially when they’ve not been pressured too much recently. The first one we fished, everyone went over with the usual muppet traces baited with Squid and/or Mackerel. We had a reasonable start taking five fish the first drift and the same again the second. Along with a couple of strap Ling there was a reasonable stamp of Codling with almost all them being 4lb - 5lb and no chuck backs.
This wreck kept us entertained right the way through slack water before sport slowed a little. With plenty to go at nearby, we moved on to try another; caught a few, then moved on again. The pattern for the day was set, and on the turn of tide the breeze eased off giving us a cracking drift line. The lads all fished brilliantly and as the day progressed, the stamp of Ling improved and we managed to take plenty in the 5-7lb range along with half a dozen low doubles. Gordon Blyth was “Top Rod” today and put together an 18 fish box of Cod and Ling plus a few throwbacks. But everyone got in on the action which is what it’s all about.
It was one of those days where if we couldn’t get a few with the excellent tide, weather and sea conditions it would have been a bad job. But the boys didn’t disappoint with some solid angling and great banter. Thanks lads for a great day out.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
A couple of reports from us from our last two trips.

Sorry for the late one from 24.06 (the day before we left for Norway)
Must have been a bit giddy and forgot!
Nabeel Ismail, his Dad Zahim and family, joined us for a distance run out to the “Wall”
By no means a top drawer day but not too bad in the end.
Every drift over the grounds producing fish for the boys and enough for each and everyone to take some home for the table.
Young Fergus filleting all their catch on the way home.
A huge thanks to “Nabs” for the home made Biryani with Samosas etc. Absolutely stunning food. Can’t wait till next time mate!
I’m salivating already!!
Yesterday saw our first day back at sea after our epic trip to Norway for a week of the most incredible fishing!
We chose the offshore route again as the tides were still running fairly high on a 5.3M
First couple of stops were for Mackerel with poor results. Just a dozen or so, so we headed off.
The first couple of wrecks produced poorly with around 8-10 fish from each of those.
We then had a run South East to some ground where there were a few more fish to be had for the lads, but again, not many.
Baited rigs proved the most effective on the day.
As the heavy rain showers approached we decided to chop the trip and headed back to port to catch the high water bridge opening.
Not a brilliant day on the fish, but as ever on the Shy-Torque, the banter was superb and everyone enjoyed their day on the water.
Kaspar taking the best fish of the day on the boat, which also won him the daily prize of £50.00 in the competition.
Well done to him!
Cheers for now.
