Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
It's been a few weeks since I've been able to produce a catch report. We've suffered with the usual rubbish weather for the time of year. I've been keeping busy doing small jobs on the boat that I haven't had the chance to do through the Summer. I've also been down to Plymouth on a Tuna fishing/handling course with Kev Lavis who Skippers on Crusader Charters, which was really interesting and informative.
View Boats Page
On Wednesday and Thursday this week we finally got the chance to have a couple of days at sea. I had been asked once again to participate in a two day Uptiding Competition for the Police, Armed Forces and Civil Service. I was more than happy to join in having done the competition last year and had a brilliant time.
Four of the WCSA Association boats had been chartered, so along with Shy Torque, Alliance and Trot-On we would be spending a couple of days Uptiding. The weather was pretty rough on the run-in to Wednesday, but thankfully, we managed to get out for both days in the end. I had a group of eight lads aboard who were very keen to get started and I could tell they took their fishing seriously, as they were all very well kitted out and organised with good bait.
The format for the competition was that all the species of fish caught would be measured, then points were allocated according to species and size, off the chart which the Skippers were given by the organiser. So even a 25cm Pouting or 45cm Dogfish contributed points towards the overall total along with the preferred Codling etc. It's a really great way to fish, with every fish counting. Prizes would be awarded to the top three point scoring anglers over the combined two days. Also a prize was awarded for the biggest Codling (on the measure, not by weight).
We ran south towards Robin Hoods Bay on Wednesday and we had a fairly reasonable day. The winds were light and with a 5.2m tide, we caught fairly consistently throughout the day and there were flushes of fish moving through so we only moved a couple of time to reposition the boat. There were plenty of Codling caught up to 55cm, along with Pouting, Whiting & Dogfish and a solo Haddock. The lads were using Squid and Black Lugworm baits in the main and fishing with running leads and flowing 3-4ft traces with a pennel arangement of hooks on; or scratching type rigs with smaller bits of bait on short hook snoods. Switching between the two different rigs allowed the lads to keep the bites coming and the scoreboard ticking over.
Thursday gave slightly more breeze to contend with, but the sea conditions weren't bad at all, so we ran south again. For whatever reason, we caught probably half the quantity of fish we had the previous day. The most noticeable thing we found was that in the places we stopped at there weren't many flushes of fish running. We would initially catch the fish that were in the vicinity of the boat then it just died off. Consequently, we moved a few more times on Thursday to try and fish the fish.
Overall it was two really enjoyable days at sea for me. With the additional measuring, netting and recording of all the fish caught, the days just flew by as I was always busy. The chat and banter amongst the lads was excellent and brutal in equal measure! We all convened at The Middle Earth Pub for Pie & Peas with a couple of pints to do the presentations to round off a great competition.
Unfortunately I didn't get much chance to take any fish pictures, so I've just stuck with the sunrise on Wednesday morning. Thanks to everyone who took part. It was certainly a highlight of the year for me. Looking forward to 2025 already.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

After a long spell away from the job with bad weather, it was great to get back out there again on Wednesday and Thursday with great teams of lads on their annual two day inter-boat Uptiding Competition.

John Wright, who organises this event with me
(The Whitby Invitational Cod Open) for his retired police colleagues, RAF friends and Civil Service mates have been looking forward to this event since last year.
The conversations with the organisers early on in the week were a bit “doom and gloom” to be fair, with swell predictions of over two metres for early Wednesday and we honestly didn’t expect to get to sea, but on the last check on the forecasts on Tuesday evening, the decision was made that we would give it a go.
The four boats involved, Shy-Torque, Trot-On, Alliance and Sea Urchin all sailed at 8.0am and had a great days angling with over 150 Cod boated between the four boats, along with all the usual “chuck backs”
Yesterday’s forecast was far from great, but because all 32 anglers were already in town, we all decided that we would have a look at it and decide on the morning.
A lovely morning welcomed us with very light winds and again, all four boats took to sea.
Not quite as good a day numbers wise with fish caught, but another great day for the lads on the water.
Another 100 plus Cod were boated, making for nearly 300 over the two day event.
Haddock, Pouting, Dogfish, Whiting amongst other species caught too. Oh, and a few Lobster!
The majority of all fish boated were measured for the points system and safely returned, which is always great to see regards future stocks.
A fantastic two days at sea with some cracking banter with the lads and as always, young Fergus was in top form as crewman.
Kim Andrews fishing aboard the Shy-Torque III took the heaviest Cod over the two days at 7lb 3oz.
Well done to him.
Thanks to all who competed and thanks to Paul, Shaun, Andy and Perry for joining us as skippers and crew.
We’re all looking forward to next year’s event already.
Cheers
Rich.

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
It looks like yesterday was the last day for us at sea for a while, with predicted Northerlies and big swells all this coming week.
View Boats Page
The Uptiding hasn’t really taken off properly yet for us this season, but after this next week things will hopefully improve.
We had a mixed group on yesterday with regular lads and some newcomers too.
The day was slow from start to finish to be honest with just a couple of pulses of fish running through in the various spots we tried.
Sammy the seal pestered us right from the off which didn’t help us with some fish being taken by him on the way up resulting in just a head left on the hook!
A short move South after the change of tide at 10.30am saw a slight improvement with a couple of slightly better fish too.
Daniel Evans from Doncaster taking the best fish of the day at 7lb 9oz, a bonny Codling.
Jack Pike and Connor, both from nearby Pickering sailed with us for the first time and really enjoyed their day.
Connor’s first ever boat trip too.
They both managed a few Codling between them which they were really pleased with.
The lads and me persevered until 3.30pm chucking everything we had at the fish, which resulted in a mere couple of dozen landed on the boat.
A couple of lobsters were netted too which were berried females and were safely returned to the water.
Thanks for your continued support lads and hopefully see you again after this spell of wintery weather has passed.
(Xmas Uptiding Competition on the boat 15th - 22nd December)
Cheers for now,
Rich.

Last Uptiding day today for Stan and Arthur.
View Boats Page
They were joined again by Ali Bell from Leicester and Dave Bunting from Barnsley.
We ran a different direction to start the day, using the last of the ebb tide which had about an hour left to run.
Fish were coming aboard steady for the first half an hour. Sadly, every fish boated were undersized and were returned safely.
Good to see so many juvenile fish showing though and very encouraging for future stocks.
A move over slack water and we were back where we’d been working the last couple of days to catch the start of the flood tide.
Nothing to start off and as the tide made stronger, the fish were still reluctant to start feeding and only a handful were were boated. A couple of Dogfish amongst them.
We moved the boat just a few hundred yards North and the fish were feeding better on this peak.
At the end of the day the lads probably boated around 30 fish but only 18 (which I filleted) were kept, so no great shakes to shout about.
Nevertheless, another nice day on the water for the lads.
Best Codling falling to Arthur at a shade over 6lbs.
Don’t forget that we are running our own Uptiding Competition just before Xmas. Cash prizes on offer. Free mince pies, hot Toddy and Xmas cheer music too!!
Starting Sunday 15th December and ending Sunday 22nd.
A few days left with spaces if you fancy a ride out.
Cheers
Rich

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
A fine day on the water yesterday with Arthur and Stan who were joined by Ali Bell from Leicester.
View Boats Page
Uptiding was the approach again after the efforts the day before were showed signs of a few fish running and a return back to the same spots it was.
A couple of steadyish periods where the Codling were coming aboard but sadly Sammy the seal came pestering us and slowed things up considerably. Nuisances!!
However, a couple of nice Pollack boated through the day around the 5-6lb mark for Arthur and Stan and Stan also taking a nice Codling just shy of 7lb.
Bonus today too with a good Lobster!
All taken on the unwashed squid and black lugworm cocktails.
A fine sunny (and warmish) day with the usual Shy-Torque chitchat and banter.
Great to see Stan up and well again and enjoying his day back on the pond.
Ord lad’s not doing bad for 89!
Cheers
Rich

Arthur and Stan are with all this week but sadly Stan hasn’t been too good this last couple of days and missed yesterday’s fishing.
Forecasts weren’t perfect and I’d told the lads I would take a look at the sea state from the West cliff at 8.0am and give them the heads up then. It was ok to sail and we left around 9.0am.
With just the 3 lads aboard we chose to have a go at the Uptiding as the tides are just starting to make a bit, around the 5.0m mark.
We ran to a few spots just 15 - 20 minutes from the harbour and played around up and down there for the day.
The fishing was far from quick but we managed around 20 Codling to keep with a good few to throw back. A couple of Dogfish too and an undersized lobster (which were all returned safely)
A couple of Codling around 5lb being the best fish today.
A nice relaxing day on the water with 3 great lads.
Cheers
Rich.

Fishing Report by Rich Ward

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
Paul Bate, his son Kieran, Chris and Jim chartered the boat for themselves yesterday for the day. Love it when a small group charter the boat.
View Boats Page
Armed up with a serious load of mixed baits we started the day off on the 3 mile area on a small piece of scrap which usually throws out a few Ling.
No Ling and just a couple of fish landed. A nice Coaley and a small Codling.
Because we had fished quite well on the grounds the day previous, we ran back out to the same areas again and started picking an odd fish or two up.
With the light breeze blowing directly off the land and the tide being very low on a 4.5m with barely any movement, the boat was being screwed out West to East which made the lines a bit awkward.
Hitting the ledges and ridges accurately was a challenge to say the least but we persevered as best we could.
Paul and Jim fishing on the transom had a bit of a giggle with one of the fish.
On landing the Codling we found the fish had taken both their baits before they’d started winding!
One fillet each with that one!!
Jim had never caught a Ling before too and he managed a couple to take home which he was really happy about.
A couple of big Mackerel caught as well by Kieran which was good to see.
The stamp of fish was certainly down on the previous day but the lads still managed to knock out a nice box of mixed fish to take, which considering how the lines had been, wasn’t a bad result for the four lads from Runcorn and they were very happy with the day.
Great to meet you lads and hopefully see you again in 2025.
Cheers
Rich.

A great day at sea yesterday with a mixed group of regulars.

Starting the day off on a bit of scrap 3 miles East of the harbour the lads took just 3 fish from it, so we wreck hopped for an hour or so up the 5 mile area.
Nothing fancy from the next 3 wrecks with maybe another half dozen or so fish to keep.
The breeze was against the tide and the boat was barely drifting which isn’t really that good for ground fishing but I chose to give a couple of ridges a shot and it worked well for the guys.
The fish were feeding pretty good to be fair, with a couple of better fish amongst them too.
Glen Stocks taking a nice Cod an ounce or 2 under 10lbs and Nige Steer taking Ling to a similar stamp.
A few nice Haddock boated there too.
Tally for the trip would be a good 50 or so fish to keep with the usual “chuck backs”
A nice surprise at the end of the day when Sam landed a couple of belting Mackerel. These must be the last of the species for the year? Who knows, with the waters warming, we could see a few more yet.
Most of the fish were coming up on the bait but a few also taken on the shads.
A really enjoyable day out yesterday with some good humour. Just a shame we didn’t see much sun but hey-ho, you have it all.
Cheers lads
Rich.

There’s no getting away from it…….today’s fishing conditions were challenging for the lads aboard Sea Urchin.

We left the harbour with the Flood tide running and a SSE wind blowing. This gave us a wind against tide situation, which held the boat up on the drift. I optimistically thought we’d try a wreck to begin with, but after three drifts with the lines running away and only a strap Ling to show for our efforts (as well as some lost tackle), I sacked the idea off. I now knew that unless the winds dropped away (which they were forecast to do in the afternoon, but didn’t), that we would be drifting the rough ground for the remainder of the day. As it turned out, that’s exactly what happened.
We had two or three drifts on the three mile ground, but there was a fleet of pots running through the most productive area I’d found, so after half a dozen clean Codling, but more lost gear, we moved out another couple of miles. Slack water, was around 1100hrs today, but with the breeze we had, I doubt many people would have known! Gradually the drift line of the boat changed and we now had wind and tide together.
The drift speed of the boat increased, so we spent the rest of the day on the seven and nine mile ground. We never got above a drift speed of 1.2 knots, but some of the anglers were really struggling to control their tackle.
Sea Urchin regulars Ian Kellock and Dave Sharp had it nailed on. A 16oz lead and a single muppet trace to catch less tide. This has the effect of minimising drag and keeping your bait on the bottom for longer, allowing the fish more time to find it. These small changes make a big difference!
Once the Ebb Tide was running, we found a nice ridge that held some decent stamp Cod. We had a few drifts where we put up some nice bright fish between 7-9lb which was great to see. Squid and/or Mackerel were the main baits today on the Muppet Traces. Ian Kellock was top rod with his best Cod going 9lb and Dave Sharp chipped in with the biggest Ling just into double figures. Fran Schaap also had a good day, taking Cod to 8lb and Ling of a similar size.
Great bunch of lads aboard todayUPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Fantastic weather today and a lovely day out again……

With very light winds and falling tides, we had a nice day out with great fishing conditions. I had a mixed group of anglers aboard, a couple whom I’d never met before, and some who I’ve not had on for a while. Plenty to talk about all day; it was set to be an enjoyable one.
We started the day off with a couple of wrecks. Unfortunately the first one had a fleet of Crab pots running off it, so we couldn’t get a drift in. The second one we tried was free of gear, so we got stuck in on the run into slack water. First drift we took a couple of plump Codling on Squid baited traces, which told us there were a few fish at home. As we began to lose the Flood Tide, the next few drifts saw two or three nice fish each run through. Mainly Codling around 3-4lb with an odd Ling.
Unfortunately, as soon as we got to slack water and even waited for the Ebb to push through, sport just tailed off. As the tide was now away, we headed for the seven mile ground and spent an hour or so on the drift. With the light breeze we had, the drift wasn’t perfect and instead of running along the usually productive ridges, we were crossing over them. This reduced the amount of time in the target area, which reduced the number of bites.
We took small Codling, Haddock, Pouting and Ling every drift when we were on the ridges, but very little from the softer areas.
After an hour or so, I thought we’d be better off on the nine mile ground, so that’s where we spent the rest of the day. A few fruitless drifts at the north end of the ground had me thinking I’d cocked up!Heading further south, thankfully we found a few fish again to spend the last couple of hours.
One area in particular gave us a few good drifts, with Keith Pickering taking his first double figure Ling at 10lb 8oz and Harry Bateman taking the biggest Cod of the day at 8lb 4oz. Everyone had a few fish to take away today and after three overcast days, the sun finally burst through to end a really enjoyable day for me. Thanks lads, you were brilliant company.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl
