    Report on-board Supreme

Greater Manchester RCSL Boat Fishing Competition
    8th July 2014

A change of organiser and therefore scorer removed any lingering possibility of arithmetic mayhem at the end of the contest. In truth the removal of responsibility and the drawing of an isolated spot on the boat brought an air of serenity to P Allen Esq. and gentleman sea angler who fished steadily throughout the day. He is always happy to provide hints and tips to fellow competitors who, to their credit, were never put off by their physical and biological impossibility.

Performance of the day went to our skipper who seemed to teleport himself from the wheel house to peg 2 with his net in hand when someone uttered the word “Lobster”!! The substantially sized crustacean (like really big) disappeared with almost the same turn of speed into a bucket in a shady spot.

Sausage butties prepared for us by the skipper on the way out had prepared us well for the match. Most of us were soon tangling with an adequate supply of mackerel for bait whilst Top Rod was just tangling.

There were plenty of Dabs and Whiting which proved to be a nuisance to all the competitors who had maxed out on these scoring fish faster then anyone can ever remember. Gurnard of any type were difficult to connect with but Huss and Dogfish showed with enough regularity to offset the disappointment of bringing up a line after line of Whiting or Dabs when other species were being targeted. Codling and Thornback Ray complimented the scoring fish on the day which was blessed with calm seas and bright sunshine with the usual copious amounts of tea/coffee and advice from our skipper Steve. We all had a pasty later on in the competition but our skipper refused his meat and potato delight probably savouring the prospect of a more up market gastronomic experience in the not too distant future.

It was both a close and surprising result which paled into insignificance in light of the great day’s fishing supplied by Steve and Supreme and the brilliant company provided by those lucky enough to be there.
