    Report on-board Just Mary

Hi One and All, apologies firstly but recently returned from extended 'end of season' break including visits to family and friends abroad and hence a lack of recent reports. The run of constant Easterly winds has caused problems with the logistics of running any trips and whilst some have managed to get out midweek the weekend trips have proved difficult in lining up customers and trips on the same day. However some good news as I now look at a wet and windy forecast for the coming week ! We managed to get out yesterday, Saturday, and although there was only six of us in total good numbers of Whiting were caught once again and good size ones too. Killer rig was baited feathers with Mackerel strip marinated in Pilchard Oil, every drop down producing bites and fish. Big baits on the 'second' rod with pennel rigs, muppets and all manner of different baits, Cuttle, Calamari Squid (from Castaways Tackle - nice big ones) and frozen Mackerel only attracted the local Dogfish population and one small Smoothound, sadly no 'Trophy Fish' for us. Although I did hear that another Angling Charter Boat near to us did manage to find a Cod. The Needles seems to be producing some Cod but patchy reports and with many boats preferring to fish our own Bay for Cod, Conger and Rays. I guess we are all guilty sometimes of driving over better fishing grounds right on our doorstep to get to the place where the Anglers think that they have to go ! Experience often teaches us to go with our own 'gut feeling' rather than join the rest of the flock, but it takes a brave Skipper to make that decision in an often 'No Win' situation. All the best, Malc.
