    Report on-board Leaca Rua

Max Couque from Galway Fishing reports on excellent fishing in Galway Bay for himself and Kevin MacGabhann, who both skipper charter boats out of Spiddal. The two boats have around 70 spurdog caught, tagged and released, which is well up on previous years. Galway Bay is the place to come for spurdog, one of the rarer species for anglers around the country. The weather was very good until the end of June and we did a lot of bait fishing catching spurdog, bull huss, pouting, cod, conger eel, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse and tope. 7 tope have been tagged and released so far, including 3 good fish between 30 and 40lbs. Thornback ray are also starting to appear in catches now, and should increase in numbers over the rest of the summer. Mackerel are plentiful and easily come by, so bait is not a problem. Pollack fishing is also very good at the moment, with shads and soft baits proving very effective. We will be targeting the blue sharks very soon as well.
