Fishing Report by John Peck

Thank you for taking the time to read my CBUK page.
I produce my fishing reports as Facebook posts to avoid duplication. My Facebook page is called " Lady Margaret Charters".
If you are thinking of booking a trip then I suggest you take a look. You will see the types of fishing that we normally do and what species we catch at what time of year. It will give you a rough idea what to expect from the trip although every trip is different.
I report on all fishing. Even if the fishing is very poor I will still report on it. Fishing tends to go in cycles as the seasons change and different species pass through the local area. Sometimes if I am very busy I will combine several trips in one report but I will always report at least weekly. If there are no posts then Lady Margaret hasn't been fishing. -

Jan 2022 by John Peck
After a very unsettled start to the month/ year the weather settled down allowing some fishing trips in very pleasant conditions.
The main target were whiting and they were around in big numbers. There were still a few big 2lb+ channels around but not as many as the excellent fishing of mid December.
Despite it being the middle of winter we saw a nice variety of species coming aboard including bass, small eyed and spotted rays, pouting, congers, dogfish and even a long Spined Sea Scorpion which attacked a bait as big as itself! -

This month saw the arrival of the winter fishing. The whiting have been slow to arrive this year with just a few landed up to December.
However, some more settled weather in the middle of the month saw some great fishing. There were lots of whiting around of a good average size with plenty in the 2lb+ class.
Along with the whiting there were blonde, undulate and small eyed rays along with congers and dogfish. There were also a few squid around.
Unfortunately the unsettled weather came back again after Christmas preventing any more trips. -

The fishing during November was restricted due to bad weather but when we did get out it was good with plenty of different species coming aboard.
The whiting haven't arrived in numbers yet with just a few caught so far. The water is still quite warm so maybe it needs to cool slightly. There are also congers, pouting, smoothhounds and dogfish when fishing at anchor and even the occasional bream still around.
The bass fishing continues to be very good. There are still good numbers of middleweight fish around along with a few heavyweights in the eight and nine pound class.
During the settled weather later in the month we also had some fine squid fishing. -

The fishing during October has been very good.
We have mainly been doing bass and plaice drifting trips and have been catching in good numbers.
In particular, there are lots of hard fighting middleweight bass around. We haven't had any more double figure fish on board this month but have had some nice thick set fish to just under 9lb.
There are lots of bait fish in the water both mackerel and scad and this has brought some large predators in. We saw a tuna jumping out in the bay.
The anchored fishing has been producing lots of congers mainly small and some nice rays. -

The fishing during September has been very good with many species coming aboard and some nice individual fish.
The plaice fishing remains good. There are lots of small fish around but also some bigger ones although we didn't land any 1kg plus fish during the month. The plaice trips are also producing lots of tub gurnards as many as I can ever remember along with small black bream.
The bass fishing continues to improve. The number of fish is still increasing and we have had some good catches. We haven't seen any more double figure fish this month but have landed quite a few thick set fish to over 8lb. They are in prime condition at the moment.
We did another turbot trip during the month. The turbot fishing was very poor but we did land a couple of nice bass and had some great bream fishing to give a very pleasant days fishing.
The anchored fishing has been good. There are lots of congers around. We have also had some nice rays and the occasional bass. -

Aug 2021 by John Peck
The fishing has been good during August after a rather subdued July. August has a reputation as being a difficult month but the last couple of years have produced some great fishing.
The plaice fishing during the month has generally been very good. There have been lots of good sized keepers around and most trips have produced fish in the 1kg range. The end of the month saw a higher proportion of smaller fish and a reduction in numbers. The inshore drifting trips have also been producing lots of tub gurnards and black bream.
Further out the anchored sessions have been producing a nice mixture of fish. The mackerel have been very erratic but there are some big ones around when you find them. There are lots of congers around along with tope and rays in addition to the usual dogfish.
The bass continue to be in relatively short supply but there are some good sized fish around. Our last trip out produced some nice middle weight fish along with a ten pounder our second double figure bass of the year on "Lady Margaret". -

The fishing during July has been a bit variable. There have been some good days with lots of fish coming aboard and some good individual fish landed. There have also been a few days when the fishing has been a bit slow. Generally the weather during the month has been favourable.
The plaice fishing remains reliable with plenty of fish around. We found the average size dropped off during the middle of the month and keepers were more difficult to come by but the fishing of the last few days has produced plenty of fish of a good average size with lots of keepers. The best plaice we landed in July was a fine fish of 4lb 4oz which is our biggest of the year so far.
There are also lots of black bream around. We landed fish to over 3lb at the start of the month but haven't been catching any big ones lately. No giltheads or couch's for us yet but the water is warm now so we may see some soon.
The bass fishing continues to be erratic. Both the ledges and the banks have produced reasonable fishing at times and also some slow fishing. We haven't landed any big fish during the last month.
The anchored fishing has produced a nice mixture of fish. There are lots of rod bending tope and congers around and quite a few rays along with the ubiquitous dogfish. -

The fishing is currently very good with a wide range of species available. We have also been helped by generally favourable weather. On some days the weather has been stunning.
The highlight of the recent fishing on "Lady Margaret" has definitely been the plaice fishing. There have been huge numbers of fish around on the local marks including some bigger fish in the 3lb+ range. On some sessions the fishing has been frenetic with bites coming all round the boat more similar to bream or bass fishing.
The bream fishing continues to be good. Hopefully this will carry on for a while yet as the fish were quite late establishing themselves this year. Lots of smaller fish around but also some bigger ones.
We haven't done much bass fishing this month but what we have done has been very poor which is a bit surprising as June is normally a great month. Fortunately, the great plaice fishing on the way in has come to the rescue. Hopefully this is just a blip and the bass fishing will improve soon.
We have also seen a nice variety of other species including turbot and brill, rays, conger, bull huss, double figure smoothhounds and tope to 20lb+. -

The annual maintenance is now complete and "Lady Margaret" is back in the water. Despite some very unsettled weather considering it is May we have had some good fishing for a variety of species.
There are currently lots of black bream around. All the local marks have been producing fish. We are still awaiting our first three pounder of the year but there are plenty of fish in the 1lb 8oz to 2lb class which give excellent sport on light tackle.
The plaice fishing has been hit and miss. There are some nice sized keepers around but you need the right conditions to get them feeding. The big storm late in the month disturbed the fishing for a while but we had a decent catch at the end of the month. We have also had mackerel, gurnards and bass coming aboard during the plaice sessions.
All this fishing is done with very light tackle and is available in local waters reached in minimal travelling time and sheltered from northerly and westerly winds.
Further out there are some nice sized bass. We did our first bassing trip of the year at the end of the month. The fishing was a bit slow but the fish were of a good average size including a fish of 10lb 12oz our first double figure bass of the year.
