    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Yesterday’s team were a mixed group of lads travelling from as far afield as Brighton!

Forecasts were perfect again and because we had had a good day on the grounds the day before we opted for the same type of fishing again.

The fish were a bit finicky to start off and remained a bit like that for the best part of the day.
Squid remains the best way of catching for us at the moment and that was the way again yesterday.

John from Brighton had a reasonable day himself working a baited Hokkai trace and finished up with around 10 fish himself which anybody would be happy with.

I worked a shad all day and managed to pluck around 7 Codling out as did our crewman Fergus. A few of them undersized and returned.

My old mate Bill Barraclough from Barnsley was working the bait and boxed a half dozen.

A great day with plenty of sunshine and banter as is always the case on the Shy-Torque!

    Cheers for now

  • 22/04/2025 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

22 Apr 2025 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

Two day report aboard Sea Urchin…. With the forecast giving fairly light SE winds with a small neap tide on Monday, we opted to run North and try a couple of wrecks. As we ran to the first wreck, I couldn’t help noticing that the conditions were not as I expected. There was a bit of breeze and when we reached our destination, the first drift gave a couple of small Codling, but the lines were streaming.

We tried three different wrecks and caught nothing other than an odd Pouting. I’m still not sure if it was the fact there were no fish on the wrecks, or the streaming lines that made the fishing so poor. A change of plan was needed!

We ran out to the five mile ground for a couple of drifts and caught one small Haddock. I was now getting fed up with the lack of sport, so we pushed straight out to the nine mile ground and spent the remainder of the day drifting that. There were plenty of bites out there, but the average stamp of fish was small, with the majority chucked back (although they were probably in size, as 35cm is ridiculously small for keeping a Codling). It was far from the day I hoped to deliver for the lads.

Today was a better weather day, with the forecast being more accurate. Very light SW winds greeted us as we ran south to try a few wrecks. First stop at 12 miles saw a steady 45 minutes fishing. With a few fish each drift of mainly Codling, I was optimistic for what the rest of the day might hold. We ran on another five miles to the next wreck and bang, we caught next to nothing!

The water was as clear as I’ve seen it anywhere this year and you could see the fish come up from a long way down. We tried another two wrecks for the same result and I then admitted defeat and we started to nose our way back home, stopping on a few wrecks on the way.

We gathered a few fish here and there and Gary Rowstron caught the first Mackerel of the year. Other than that, it was another disappointing day. The anglers have been fantastic, which makes me more annoyed when things don’t go to plan.

I make no secret of the fact that I don’t like Spring fishing, you can be zero or hero every day. I’ve been zero the last two days….sorry boys.

  • 22/04/2025 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

22 Apr 2025 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

It’s always nice to get to sea and not have to race around everywhere looking for the “Big one” in the competitions.

Yesterday’s trip was very relaxing for us and we had a great day playing around on the relatively inshore marks.

A drop on a small piece of wreckage just 5 miles off to start the day where the lads took a couple of Codling and a couple of Haddock.
Then a drop on the nearby ground which proved rubbish!

We moved another couple of miles further off to a wreck at the North end of the 7 mile where the lads took another half a dozen Codling.
They weren’t suicidal but they were biting which was good.
Mostly coming up on the baited rigs.

As that wreck dried up we moved again.
This time we ran back out to the area where we’d found a good picking the day before but before that we dropped on another small wreck.
    Good move Wardy!

It kept us going for a good 2-3 hours and the lads plucked around 40 fish from it.
Nothing big but some nice steady action.

When we had milked that one we finished off on the previous days ground and the fish were committing themselves fully.
On one drift we took over 15 fish, but unfortunately we had landed in the kindergarden and only kept 2 or 3!!
That continued for the rest of the day.

Up and down the drift another half a dozen drifts and the day was done and with the devils SE breeze picking up it was time to head off home.

Unlike the day previous where I had been knocking the fish out on the shads and sidewinders, I couldn’t click a fish and the majority came up on the squid baited rigs.

Andy Chesham who hadn’t been to sea since he was a young lad out fishing everyone!
Fergus explained that you must pay out your line to maintain contact with the bottom and don’t “jig” baited rigs!
He ended up with 15 or so himself.

A better tally on the count with a good 80+ fish to keep.

A cracking day at sea again with good company. Young Fergus offering his services and filleting away all the way back to harbour.

We have a few spaces left this Thursday if anyone fancies joining us.

    Cheers
    Rich.

  • 20/04/2025 Fishing Report by Rich Cope on Mistress (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

20 Apr 2025 by Rich Cope

    Report on-board Mistress

It was the last day of the festival yesterday, I had a plan.......

It's been hard to nail down a settled spell with weather to run to a group of wrecks a little over 30 miles away, but we got it yesterday. I've not managed to get out that way since last September so expectations were running high!

Did we catch fish? Oh yes we caught fish, some nice ones too! but not quite big enough to win the spring festival!
We visited 4 wrecks 2 fished better than others, we manged every rod in on one drift some manged 2 drops that drift too.
There didn't seem to be any favourite methods, shads and bait traces took equal amounts of fish.

Everywhere we went we were just picking steady away 1-3 fish a drift, once the ebb came through the fishing unfortunately died on us. There were some spectacular marks on the sounder which always makes me question if there was enough tide or drift to get the fish really fired up. Our lines were perfectly vertical on both side of the boat all day.

With a good run home required we set off back to whitby at 1420 and hit the pier ends at 1645.

Thanks again to all the anglers taking part in the spring festival, thanks to all our sponsors, Simon Page at Billy Wilson, Jill Blackburn and sandy at the Middle Earth Tavern and also The station.
Well done to Toby for catching winner with Andy on Sea Urchin.

Our next big summer competition runs 28/6/25 - 20/7/25
If you're interested in a trip with me please give me a call on 07977 436903, if you can't get hold of me please give me a text message or WhatsApp and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
    Tight lines - Rich

  • 21/04/2025 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

21 Apr 2025 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Yesterday was the last day of this years Spring Festival here at Whitby and as it was almost 2 weeks ago since we sailed, we were very happy to be getting out.

The leading fish up to yesterday was one of just over 8 lbs, so we were hopeful that with the tides being perfect for wrecking and the winds being light, there was half a chance of finding that winning fish.

We ran offshore to one of our favourite wrecks just over 17 miles off where we’d fished ok a couple of weeks back.
The fish were interested and the first 4 or 5 drifts produced over 20 fish, with the best going around 9.5lbs.
Not a big one but big enough to take the lead (if nobody else came in with a better one)
    We kept our fingers crossed!

The day panned out really nice, with the lads taking fish everywhere we stopped after that, including the grounds a bit more local to the harbour.
A few of them taking “double ups” on the baited rigs too.
Things are maybe starting to show signs of improving a bit closer in at last.
I tried a couple of shads on the ground too which caught fish. The water clearing out nicely now.

At the weigh in we popped our fish on the scales which registered 9lb 5.5oz which took the lead (for 10 minutes!)
At the last knock, another Ling came to the scales at 11lb which pipped us!
Ah well, not to worry. Shaun from Cumbria was well pleased with his day and his 12 fish caught. His Ling taking 2nd place overall. Well done to him.

Aside the weather being pants for most of the competition, it ended with a bit of a flurry yesterday and all the contenders had a great day.
Our tally for the day would be over 70 to keep along with the other chuck backs.

Thanks to everyone who booked with us in the competition and we will see you in the Summer one.

    Cheers
    Rich.

  • 20/04/2025 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

20 Apr 2025 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

It’s been a while…..what with a family holiday and pants weather etc; but the wind finally eased back a bit and we got the chance to have a run out today.

As it was a tiny 4.4m neap tide, wrecking was the order of the day. With it being a Sunday and seven other Charter boats in action, finding offshore wrecks in range wasn’t easy. Once I knew where everyone else was headed, I opted to push tide and head North to some wrecks at 20-25 miles. I’m not keen on running out that far, but it was definitely going to be the best option to find a few fish in the clearer water.

We arrived at the first wreck around 0930hrs and I noted that it was marking a lot of feed around it. Hopefully the predators would be in amongst them. Thankfully after a long steam we got amongst some fish for a good few drifts. All Codling, with eight fish being the best drift and a nice stamp with mainly 3-5lb fish. After a hour, things had really slowed down, so I opted to push on another five miles.

Arriving at a small wreck just before slack water, the drift was very slow and it appeared the Pouting were feeding but the Cod weren’t. Almost bang on slack Toby Plotzitzka hooked a fish that put a little bend in his 80lb Class Rod! To be fair I hadn’t a clue that it was a bit better sized fish, but in fairly short order he wrestled up a nice Ling of 11lb 2oz! Once the tide Ebb tide got away, the Codling came back on the feed and we fished away steadily for another hour or so, taking fish every drift. As expected, muppet bait traces dominated, baited with Squid or Mackerel (Frozen). No surprise the Ling came to Mackerel….

A lovely group of lads who fished well and everyone got a few fish. At this time of year, I’d class that as a decent enough day…..shame the steam took so long. A massive thanks to everyone for coming, you were great company. Big thanks to my son Will, who was on crewing duties.

Also, massive congratulations to Toby who’s Ling also took first prize and £1000 in the WCSA Spring Competition.

    Report on-board Mistress

It's been an absolutely stunning day at sea today.

We sailed with only a few lads onboard and I hoped we might rake a picking inshore but all we could muster was a few pouting each spot until we reached a wreck at 13 mile.
We picked away and managed half a dozen keepers codlings, until the pouting fest started again.

I had a natter with the lads and they agreed to chuck a few extra quid in the fuel kitty so we could get a bit closer to Denmark!
It was a good move we got to our 1st offshore mark and got a really good hour on the shads and hokkai rigs getting every rod in every pass through.
As it dried up we tried a couple other mrk finishing on a high on another Wreck getting most rods in every pass plus a couple of double shots on the hokkai rigs.

We didnt tally up a total but we'd plenty of cod and pollock to keep with even more throwbacks backs not keeping anything under 45cm the best going over 8lb for Rob.

If you're interested in a trip with me, please give me a call on 07977 436903 if you can't get hold of me please drop me a text message or WhatsApp and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

    Tight lines Rich

  • 08/04/2025 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

8 Apr 2025 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

We took to sea yesterday for the first time in this years WCSA Spring competition.

A great forecast prediction with winds of 3-5 knots making it (hopefully) perfect for an offshore wrecking trip.

First stop with our regular mixed group of lads was just over 12 miles from harbour.
The lads were all armed with a good selection of bait, hoping to click that £1000.00 festival winner.

The first drift produced a few small Codling and likewise on the next couple of passes.

A move to the next piece of scrap after most rods were stuck in the wreck on the fourth drift was then in order.

We arrived at our second point on slack water, meaning that we could work it down to the last metre.
The lads picked away on this one until nearly home time and managed around 40 Codling from it which to be fair, after our last offshore run, wasn’t a bad result at all.

The big fish weren’t playing out and our best fish of the day was a Codling of just 4lb 5oz!
Having said that, that fish was big enough for Jonathan Stirrup from Preston to take the heaviest of the day and win him the daily prize of £50.00.
    Well done to him.

Tally for the day would be 40+ to keep with a good number returned to fight another day.
Baited rigs taking the fish, but also the water clear enough on the more distant wreck for the shads to work too!

Young Fergus getting some filleting work on the way back and in port.

A great day out on the water with great company too.
Cheers lads, great to sail with you all.

Our next trip out is next Saturday where we have room for a couple more anglers.

    Cheers Rich.

  • 26/03/2025 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

26 Mar 2025 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

What a beautiful day out……. With a reasonable weather forecast and a group of Sea Urchin regulars aboard who were happy to have a run offshore; I had a spring in my step as I made my way to the boat this morning.

We had already agreed in advance to try an area of rough ground that I haven’t fished before, which involved a long run out. I was happy to do it, as all the lads were experienced anglers and knew that we could potentially be running out there for nothing, but….. “He Who Dares Rodders”!!

We used the Ebb Tide to run North and with everyone having at least a couple of different outfits, most people started off on bait traces with Squid to try and get a fish under their belts, before trying the lures.
First drift saw half a dozen small Codling and Haddock, which indicated there were a few fish down there. Ian Kellock had a couple on a Shad and most people switched straight over as we all love the lures.

We ran a few drifts for the next hour, exploring different areas; picking up fish every run, until we lost the tide. A couple of miles away there was a wreck to try, so we headed there for slack water. Everyone was on bait now due to the lack of tide, but we could only muster a couple of Codling each drift and as soon as the tide turned, we went back to the ground marks and Shads. Things kicked in nicely once the Flood got going and we had some solid sport on the Shads for the rest of the day. We found one area that held a few better fish when we covered it and we had a couple of better sized Pollock and Codling.

Shads probably took 90% of the fish caught today and Ian Kellock was top rod with 25-30 fish on his own. If the average size had been 3-5lb it would have been the best day for ages, but there were alot of throwbacks (they were take-able size), but the lads only take better size fish. There was no best colour on the Shads, everything seemed to work today. Everyone caught plenty and the banter was epic as always. Tony Firman deserves a special mention for persevering with the Slow-Pitch jigs and getting his Pollock in far from ideal conditions for them.

Thanks lads, brilliant day, really enjoyed your company as always.
