Fishing Report by Rich Ward
4 Aug 2022 by Rich Ward
Stuart Faye, his son James and 5 of their friends from Liverpool chartered the Shy-Torque III yesterday for the day.
3 out of the 7 were experienced course anglers and the other 4 were absolute beginners.
Our Charlie couldn’t make the trip to crew, so a mate of mine Mathew Spinks who had been fishing with me for the last fortnight, joined us to help out and helped me to explain all the “ins and outs” before we started.
We started at the Bouy to try for some Mackerel to start off and they were in abundance. Literally 2 minutes there and we had enough bait for the day!!
We chose to work the rough ground/reefs after that, hoping that we could get a picking going there without having to try any wrecks.
A dozen Codling on the first short drift and 3 Ling was good enough for a start and the lads were buzzing!!
A couple of double-ups on the drift too.
We stayed on the first mark until around 11.30am and gathered a lovely show of Codling and Ling. Nothing big at all but plenty of fish to the 5lb mark.
A short move to another bit of ground after we’d exhausted the first stop, where the lads finished the day with another 10 or so fish.
The breeze then picked up from the NW and was very fresh at times (not forecast!) so the lads decided that a slightly earlier finish was ok and we headed back for port.
I told the lads that I would gladly fillet all their fish when we got back and suggested they nipped for a pint or 2 whilst I processed their fish which they did.
All in all, a fabulous day had by all.
Cheers lads and we’ll see you again next year.
Enjoy the skiing Stuart!!!
All the best,
Rich

Hopefully other skippers will see this post.
RANT time!!
I’d like to thank a certain Mark Roberts, if that’s your real name? (Telephone number 07829889868) if that’s your real number? for not turning up this morning with your 6 associates. You have cost me and my lad our wages for the day.
I have seen and heard some stuff in my 40 years in the charter fishing game, but when I called him this morning at 6.55am to ask where he was, to which he replied, “nearly with you Rich, we are just on the bridge looking at the boats” I did start to worry, as the bridge I was looking at in Whitby had no pedestrians on it at all and just the bridge operators.
I asked him “what bridge are you on?” thinking they may be on the new road bridge further up the river, but oh no, apparently they were stood on a bridge in Jersey!! F*****g Jersey! Really!!!!
Now forgive me for being a little vexed about this but, getting mixed up with Whitby and Whitley Bay is a slight possibility but f*****g Jersey!!
Anyway, his number has now been passed on to all the other skippers here who will also now block him.
This job is hard enough in the first place without this happening. A man with a wooden head couldn’t get a fishing trip this wrong! Could they??????????
Our Charlie is working every chance he gets with me as he is saving like mad for his new motorbike in September and needs his wage more than ever! I hope he meets this lad one day!
Thinking about it now, with a cold beer in hand, I really hope his story was true and it’s cost them a lot of money on flights or a ferry for a completely wasted journey there.
Rant over.
On a brighter note, we did sail with the other 2 lads we had booked on, albeit a shorter trip than normal for obvious reasons and had some lovely Cod to 9lb 8 oz.
Cheers and keep a tight line!
Rich

The first group from Smith Brothers Electrical Engineers from Huddersfield sailed with us yesterday.
6 out of the 7 guys were inexperienced so a little guidance was required at times.
After a 10 minute mackerel session we decided that ground work was the order of the day and started work just 3 miles from land and basically sat there until 2pm until the speed of the drift was too quick.
Neil out fishing everyone and even managed a couple of “double ups” too.
The lads and lass then chose to return to port as they were staying over in Whitby and fancied a bite to eat and a beer!
All the fish was filleted down for them on the way back whilst our Charlie brought the boat home.
A fun day out with great company.
Cheers chaps and we’ll see your other team in a couple of weeks.

The last couple of days have proven quite challenging to be fair with the “devils wind” rearing up from the South East each afternoon.
This direction always making the job difficult with a swift drift speed.
However, the weather was on our side both days and the lads did enjoy some nice fishing over the slack water periods with a good sprinkling of Codling mainly coming from the rough ground marks.
Clear water giving us some nice sport on the Shads whilst the baited rigs also working. A couple of “double ups” boarded yesterday.
May Spinks who’s fishing with us for a fortnight showed us all how to go on on Wednesday with his Shad work and managed a dozen himself.
Cheers for now,
Rich

Local lad Alan Ward (not my Dad) and his mate chartered the boat for just themselves yesterday.
As any charter skipper will tell you, days like this are wonderful with oodles of space!
We started the day on the Mackerel which were playing ball first thing and were plentiful in their numbers.
We decided to have a nice relaxing day on the grounds where the lads picked nice healthy Cod and Ling up.
Best fish fell to Alan, a lovely fish a shade under 9lb.
Cheers and enjoy your fishing!

After tearing around the North Sea for 3 weeks in the recent competition it was so nice to get back to nice relaxing angling yesterday without the pressure of trying to find the ”big one”
We started out on some ground a couple of miles off to gather some mackerel which were quite plentiful for the lads.
We then trotted down to some local spots just 3.5 miles from shore and picked Codling and a few small Ling up until slack water.
A couple of wrecks over slack produced one or two slightly better fish but nothing huge.
Alan Keys taking the best fish from the wrecks with a nice Cod just shy of 8lb.
A lovely, but very damp at times, sort of day!!
Cheers lads,
Rich

Been a while since we have put a report up on here chaps which I apologise for.
The Summer competition has just finished here at Whitby and I thought I’d leave it till it ended before posting. Been a bit tired to be honest!
The event was a success again with the lads and lasses managing 15 days at sea, during which we had some nice fish boated.
Unlike last year where the boat took competition winners in all 3 events, we struggled to find the overall winner in this one, with our best fish being a few ounces short of 12lb which was a lovely Cod.
As always we would like to thank all those who fished with us, both regulars and newcomers.
Hopefully you all enjoyed it and return again in the future.
Our next competition here is in September and runs for 2 weeks from the 10th to the 25th inc.
Another £1000.00 up for grabs in that one too so if you fancy a go give me a ring on the usual number :- 07733 233352
Email :- richardward384@yahoo.co.uk
Booking form also on CBUK
Cheers and happy fishing wherever you go.

Not very good at all for the majority of yesterday’s mixed group of lads.
That is with the exception of my mate Derek Wiggins from Leeds who always works his socks off on every trip!
He fished a single 220g jig all day and ended up with 15 Codling and 2 Ling himself! 100% effort paid dividends.
Phil Ross from Stratford taking 8 fish himself too.
A challenging drift at nearly 2 knots making it really quite hard work catching to be honest.
Great humour all day though with a great bunch from Hook nr Goole.
Great to meet you all lads.
Summer Competition starting here at Whitby tomorrow. Big cash prizes on offer!!
Cheers
Rich

A slowish picking for yesterday’s lads.
A breezy sort of morning hindering the angling somewhat, however the lads did pick fish up everywhere we went but just not that many!
A great crack on board all day long made the day fly by!
James Webster taking the best bag with 8 fish for himself.
No big fish landed at all on this trip.
Cheers for now,
Rich

Paul Mawson and his mates booked the boat for a 12 hour trip yesterday.
We sailed at 5am and because the forecast was to freshen up from the SE we decided to run to some marks East of the harbour.
The first stop producing around 15 fish with Codling to around 6lb.
Second mark gave the lads another dozen or so fish that’s all, so we moved to the outermost place on our route and this provided the lads with some quite superb fishing for the rest of the day.
Plenty of Cod to 10lb with a good number of “double ups “ and organiser Paul clicking a cracking Ling of 20lb 8oz which is the biggest fish on the rod out of Whitby so far this year. He commented that we should have saved it until he was on again in the upcoming Summer competition!
We’ll just have to try and find his big brother!!
Simon England taking a nice Ling of 15lb too.
The lads thoroughly enjoyed the trip with excellent banter throughout the day too.
Cheers lads and see you all soon.
Tight lines,
Rich
