The cod fishing has started to improve on the inshore marks again here at Whitby with the ground marks offering the lads some lovely fresh run fish.
At this time of the year the cod are very often finding food off the bottom so finding a good "feed" mark is often essential for success. Cod well into double figures can often be found feeding well off the bottom (sometimes 50-60ft !)
Paul Williams from Barnsley is pictured with a lovely cod of 9lbs which he caught some 40 turns off the bottom, whilst we worked a feed mark, on a "rhubarb and custard" 4" shad.
Nice one mate!! -

Yesterday saw John Wilcock ( my Sunday crewman ) return to the boat after a small bout of ill health. Great to see him fully recovered.
Not the best of tides to return to now that they are approaching the big springs again, but John is always up for the challenge!
We worked a couple of wrecks out on the 7 mile stream to start, with just a few fish to count. Nothing of any size either with cod to 6lb and ling to around the 10lb mark. As the tide steadily pushed through the fishing fell even quieter so we decided to push off a little further to the 9 mile ground. Again, nothing startling, with a few codling to 7lb and a few more ling to 8lb.
The breeze started to freshen up after lunch and we ran back towards a wreck which isn't very well known to others. Trouble was we were racing along at over 2 knots by this time! John had just a couple of the fresh mackerel left which he had caught on the 9 mile.
"Last ditch" he said to me. In typical John Wilcock style ( and over 55 years experience in sea angling )he persevered to the bitter end and was finally rewarded with what is now leading this Septembers competition.
A cracking ling of 21lb 5.5oz.
John will return to fish with us next Friday to fish the last couple of days.
Well done mate and good luck!!!

A phenomenal days fishing aboard the boat today with a mixed group of anglers from around the Yorkshire region.
The forecast was always against us so we decided to stay fairly local for the first hour or so but as the breeze eased to almost a draft we decided to open the throttles and run to some offshore wrecks.
The first one at 17 miles produced very little with a handful of cod to 7lbs and similar with the ling.
Onwards and outwards was the order and after another 45 minute steam we dropped on the first of two wrecks some 27 miles from shore, South East of " Baymans Hole" which are seldom fished.
RESULT!! Cod to over 12lbs ( plenty of em' ) Ling to over 16lbs and Pollack to just short of 12lbs ( plenty of em' )
A cracking day with a cracking team!!
Pictured is Paul Siddle from Patrington Nr Hull with his best two fish of the day, the ling being just over 16lbs and winning a daily prize in this years Autumn angling comp. Paul amassing over 130lbs of fish on the day!!

Some brilliant wreck fishing over the last set of small tides this last week.
Pollack to 10lbs and Ling to just short of 19lbs.
Yesterday saw Ben Laws of Whitby take the first daily prize in this years late summer angling competition here at Whitby. Had the fish not decided to throw it's stomach up on surfacing it would definately be leading the comp!!
Bens fish won him the £50.00 first prize plus the boat sweep of £200.00 !!! Nice days work mate !!
Still some free places left next week lads so why not come and have a try for the £1000.00 first prize yourself!
Pictured is Ben Laws with his ling of 18lb 11.5oz which is currently the 2nd heaviest fish weighed in. -

Oh, how I love it when the lads decide to have a sweep aboard the boat. It always seems to generate a little bit more excitement than normal. That extra effort seems to be given from each and every angler and today was no exception! With each man putting a "fiver" in the pot there was a very nice £45.00 on offer today.
The lads today were from as far afield as Leicester and Bulgaria!!
The day started really slow with the first 3 marks producing just 3 or 4 fish. After another hour or so trying more marks inside with little else coming aboard, we decided to push off to a wreck 18 miles off shore.
Good move! We arrived at the wreck at around 11a.m and by 2p.m we had just about exhausted it after taking around 50 fish off it. The best fish of the day falling to my rod, and whey hey, the lads had invited me into the sweep too. Most unusual!! Nearly all the fish had fallen to the blue "Sidewinder" shads indicating the water was a lot clearer offshore than inshore.
Thanks for a great days entertainment lads and hope to see you all again real soon.

Some cracking weather here this last few days has lead to some cracking fishing for the boys aboard the Shy-Torque.
Two groups from Manchester and Richmond joined us on Saturday and were rewarded with some lovely cod to around 10lb. Fish were taking the shad more than anything. The blue Sidewinders being the best attractant.

The neap tides here at Whitby this last few days have produced some good fishing indeed. The cod have been a little elusive at times, however when we have come across them we have been landing some quality fish to just short of 12lbs.
Sadly the wind has drawn round to the South Easterly quarter again and has hindered us big time!! Looks like it's stuck there for a couple of days too :-(((((
Pictured is Rich Priest from Lancaster with a nice cod of 11lb 8oz.
More reports when it calms a bit.

This week has again seen some good days angling aboard the boat.
Yesterday another mixed group joined us from Lancaster Leeds and Halifax. A fairly slow start to the day but by dinner time we were seeing some good quality fish coming aboard.
Rich Priest from Lancaster found the best cod of the day at 11.5lbs and his mate Billy Tennant from Lancaster had the best ling of the day at 14.5lbs which was his PB.
Great company as usual. A really enjoyable day.

Another cracking days fishing aboard the boat today with a mixed group of lads from as far afield as Chesterfield and Newcastle.
The day started with some hectic mackerel fishing at the bell. Enough to supply the bait rigs all day long after just one drift!! Good to see the bait flying on board as quickly as that again. Long may it last.
We started the bottom fishing on a patch of ground just 4 miles East of the piers with a good start. Five fish to 10lb on the first drift. Sadly each drift after that went downhill as the tide strengthened and the drift was up to 1.7 knots.
After a little deliberation we decided to have a very steady steam to a group of wrecks some 14 miles off shore giving the tide time to slow a bit. Bingo!! With a good load of mackerel processed for the kill on the bait traces we started hammering the fish out. Granted, 80% were of the ling variety but what a cracking 3 hours sport with fish to just over 14lbs. Pete Tamms from Leeds did have what looked like a belting fish on but sadly lost it!! Ah well maybe to be captured by tomorrows team.
Pictured is Dr Ash Bandela from Newcastle with the best fish today at just over 15lbs.
Summers here lads!! Come and enjoy some fantastic sport at Whitby.
