August has started really well for us here at Whitby both with the weather and with the fishing.
Yesterday and today we have been shark fishing on the Shy-Torque, sadly with no fish showing again.
A mate of mine told me yesterday that the Icelandic fleet have taken some 500,000 tonnes of mackerel from the sea up there over the last 3 months. This has to have a massive impact on the way the sharks are feeding and is probably the main reason we have yet to boat one this year. That is one Hell of a lot of fish!!!!
The lads have however have had some good fishing on the ground whilst waiting for the big boy with plenty of small codling to 7lbs and an odd half decent ling popping up, the best going a shade over 14lbs for Peter Bloom from Pickering.
The weather is set to stay settled for the next few days here and with the tides falling to neaps again from tomorrow we should be seeing some good sport.
Pictured is Peter Bloom who looks after the seal and sea lions at Flamingo Land theme park.
His personal best to date at 14lb 3oz.

Yesterday we decided to have a run off to 3 wrecks in a group on the 20 mile mark.
They let us down somewhat with only 20 - 30 fish in total off them. However the cod we had off them were a good stamp with the best fish being 9lb. After we had picked them clean we ran back into the ground on the 9 mile and finished off nicely with another 30 or so cod before the wind drew round to the South East and spoiled things!
With 30 minutes back at the bell bouy for the lads to gather the some lovely fresh mackerel for the plate we called it at 4 p.m as the breeze was very fresh by then!

This week has seen some steady fishing board the boat so far.
On Monday a mixed group from the North East joined us and enjoyed some great summer weather along with some great summer fishing!
The lads decided it would be an idea to have a boat sweep and £5.00 per man was agreed. With a full 12 complement on board a £60.00 bonus was on offer! Up until 2 p.m the best fish on the boat was a nice cod of 7lb 9oz ( nothing startling! ) Then, Chris Maltby from Darlington brought a nice ling of 11lb aboard which held out till close of play. Trip paid for plus a couple of pints!! Well done Chris.
The lads ended up with a nice bag of fish each.
The lads are back aboard the boat this next month. I will push them for a £10.00 per man sweep next time!!

With the conditions settled and a sea like a mill pond we decided to open the taps and run to a couple of wrecks well offshore on Friday with some cracking results!
The shads fished well with the water being as clear as Gin. However the best fish on the day was that of Fred Mallander. A cracking cod of 16lb 5oz which took a cocktail of fresh mackerel and squid.
Happy anglers all round with fab conditions and a good bag of fish each.

Chris Dalby from Chesterfield joined us on the boat on Thursday and out fished everyone including me ( and that's not allowed !!! )
The fishing in the morning was slow to say the least but after the change of tide things picked up and the ground on the 9 mile produced some cracking cod to just over 15lbs. Best ling on the day was just under 12lbs.
The baited Hokkais and cocktail rigs are still outfishing any artificial lures at the moment.

There have been some cracking fishing this week aboard the Shy-Torque.
We sailed a little earlier to try a wreck some 24 miles off shore. We haven't been to it for some time and expectations were running high on the way out!
With just 8 lads on board there was a load of room and hopefully a load of fish on the wreck. Sadly there wasn't!! However with some perseverance we managed to pull around 40 fish from it over a couple of hours so not too bad. Biggest fish was a 14lb ling caught by Nigel Hall from Richmond. He also had an 11lb cod on the same drop!

Today saw the weather almost on the "perfect" side for a good cruise off shore and as the tides are fairly big at the moment we had a conflab before we sailed!
The lads all agreed that a trip to the "wall" was in order . With the remnants of the Northerly swell left from yesterday and after a 27 mile steam we arrived at 9.0.am and began the hunt.
Fishing was a little slow to begin with over slack but as the tide got moving on the ebb the fish started flying aboard! Again, the clarity is playing a major role in how we are succeeding on the day and the best tactic today again was the baited Hokkai traces.
The shads and artificials are catching but not as well as the bait.
A long steam out there but nearly always worth it !!!
If you fancy a trip to the "wall" yourselves let me know when you are making your enquiries.
Pictured is Lee Taylor from Liverpool with his best cod of the day at 9lb.
Wherever you are fishing may your lines be tight!!!

Plenty of mixed groups just lately on the Shy-Torque.
A split group of lads from Liverpool and Silsden nr Skipton joined us the other day and enjoyed a really good days sport on the rough ground on the 9 mile. Plenty of codling and ling to around the 10lb mark.
Most of the fish being taken on the baited Hokkai traces again today. Hokkai tipped with squid and fresh mackerel doing the job. An indication that the water below isn't as clear as on the surface. Continuing Northerly swells hindering the clarity on the bottom at the moment.

The crew on the Shy-Torque today were again a mixed lot from all over the place, as far afield as Scotland!!
The ground fishing proved the best for these lads today and we managed to gather a fine selection of both cod and ling. Nothing of any real size, however there were a few ( what looked like ) better fish hooked and lost through too much heavy "pumping" !
With a good number of mackerel showing at the bouy this morning this was to be the best bait today with the lads tipping the hokkai traces.
