With weather conditions being far from ideal, we had a pretty successful day on Sea Urchin. A swift start saw everyone off the mark on the first inshore wreck we visited.
The average size of the Codling was around 3-4lb with a couple of 5’s and a 6 pounder thrown in for good measure.

After a quiet hour while the tide and wind were really pushing us through, we made a move to a small inshore wreck, ready for when things calmed down.
This turned out to be a great move as five rods out of six took fish on the first drift at the new wreck. We ran the wreck for an hour before coming home and the boys picked plenty of quality Codling off to take home. Enjoyable day, in great company.

After what can only be described as a week of “pants” weather, we had a run out today with a group of great lads, who are regulars on Sea Urchin.
Ian Kellock was top rod for the day, with a double figure haul of lovely Codling up to 5lb. Dave Guest chipped in with half a dozen Codling of a similar stamp and “Grumpy Martin” (he’s only happy when he’s grumpy!!) had a very similar result with Codling around the 5lb mark.

The biggest fish of the day fell to Andy the Skipper; when being pestered by Pouting, he left one on the hook and a double figure Ling snaffled it up.
All in all, a very enjoyable day out, with a great bunch of lads. Squid accounted for all the Codling, on either a muppet baited rig, or Hokkai’s

It's been a tricky couple of weeks in the Spring festival at Whitby, with not much in the way of big fish making an appearance. That said, we've had some fairly consistent action on Sea Urchin with our customers taking three daily prizes and plenty for the table.

It is now back to business as usual, so if you fancy a run out at Whitby, rest assured, Sea urchin will provide it.

Hope to see you on-board soon.

The Spring Festival continues at Whitby, with some better weather. Dave Carmody was on-board for the day and is well versed in what’s required to winkle out a decent fish or two off the Whitby wrecks.
He helped himself to the biggest fish of the festival so far, when he landed a lovely 7lb 2oz Ling. All the boys on the boat took plenty of fish home for the table and a combined 32 fish total of mainly Codling in the 3-4lb bracket was a good reward for the 20 mile run off.
Squid and Hokkai’s baited with squid are still dominating the catches, so if you’re coming on board over the next few days, we would definitely recommend bringing some with you.

What a brilliant day out today, with some top anglers. We had another run off, to get to some wrecks in clear water and the boys all got stuck straight in. Every drift saw a few fish come aboard.

Top rods on the day were Adi Smethurst and Andy Townsend. Andy helped himself to a plenty of Codling and three Ling around the 6lb mark. He persevered all day, lost gear in the wreck, but reaped the rewards with his persistence.

Adi kept us entertained all day with his stories and also fished like a star. He managed a fish a drift for the first couple of hours and had some quality Codling up to 5lb. Then he cagily announced that he had one that felt “ok”! A minute or so later he had a 7lb Pollock on board!!

The cracking Pollock was enough to win the daily prize in the Spring Festival and take the overall lead with a week to go. We finished the day on Sea Urchin with 41 fish between five anglers.

After a reasonable days' Uptiding (where we landed 32 Codling) on Wednesday, the lads were keen to have a run off today. It was a bit of a gamble as the water had been badly stirred up the day before. Pleased to say that it was a gamble that paid off. All the lads on board caught fish, with only a few throwbacks and plenty of 3-4lb Codling for the pan. Squid was by far the best bait of the day and Hokkai's baited with squid, also picked up a good number of fish.

Sea Urchin regular Ian Kellock is pictured here with one of the better fish of the day, a lovely 4.5lb Codling. Altogether, the lads caught thirty Codling and a couple of Pouting, which was a reasonable result for the day. With a Codling of just over 5lb leading the festival, it is all to play for. It only takes on decent fish to win the festival from one of the distant wrecks, hopefully it will come tomorrow on Sea Urchin.

The Whitby Spring Festival hasn't gone as planned. We're currently experiencing one of the biggest northerly gales we've had all winter! Fishing trips have been cancelled for a while now, until it falls away.

Whitby Charter Skippers Association have taken the decision to extend the Festival an extra week, until to the 25th April.
Theres still a cracking £500 prize money up for grabs for 1st place over the event plus daily prizes too.

I still have a few places available in the extra week. Please give me a call to book a trip.

As some of our regular customers may have heard, the next chapter in the Sea Urchin legacy continues, and the story for me (Andy Savage) begins. Today I formally took over the reins from an absolute gentleman.....Pete Rose.

Pete has been running Sea Urchin Fishing Charters for the last ten years. Having been one of his customers during that time, it was crystal clear that Pete certainly knew how to put his customers on the fish and give them a great day out. During 2020, after Pete decided he wanted to wind things down a little and enjoy some well earned retirement; I was given the opportunity to follow my dreams.

Pete and I have been working together for a while now, which has allowed me unrestricted access to his wreck and reef fishing experience around Whitby (along with his diaries, charts, plotter and sounder!!) We have a very similar ethos when it comes to looking after our customers....they definitely come first.

Nothing will be changing in 2021 with regards to bookings, payments, prices etc. and Pete will continue to work with me during this transitional period and beyond, so I get the chance to meet all the loyal and regular anglers who I haven't yet bumped into.

Pete will also continue to work with Sea Urchin and crew on the boat to keep his hand in....and make plenty of Yorkshire Tea!! I'm looking forward to meeting new and old friends, so please don't be surprised when you ring to check the weather, or make a booking when I answer the phone, instead of Pete. The number remains the same 07855439380

    Best Regards
