    Report on-board Silver Spray II

I had almost forgotten how much easier a bit of nice weather makes this job, over the past six months I can’t remember having settled weather for more than a few days at a time so when the winds dropped out and the temperature came up we have been making the most of it.
One thing I didn’t get to do much last year was free lining, due to the bad weather the fish don’t tend to push into the shallow water so much. So with the right conditions recently we have been heading round the Jurassic coast and connecting with some hard hitting bass, on the light tackle this really is a superb way to fish for them. Elsewhere the bass have continued to feed as well with the first of the large female fish starting to show up on both sides of the channel. Ian Napier nailed his personal best with a fine 11lber, again on 6-12lb class gear it gave a phenomenal scrap all the way to the boat with several 10-20 yard runs. On the other side of the channel in Alderney we have been spending our time evenly between flatties and tope. The larger turbot lately seem to have been picking out the sand eel flappers over the mackerel baits, Lee Shepherd spent his birthday over in Alderney and gave himself a nice present of a new PB turbot just into the double figures. On the anchoring side of things the tope have giving us the run around, usually coming on the feed at slack water it can be quite interesting keeping up with half a dozen or so hook ups at a time. Darren Carwardine wrestled with his 46lber for over 10 minutes, luckily enough is came into the net very smoothly and curled itself up otherwise I don’t think we would have got it aboard without the aid of the gunnel door.
Out on the wrecks it’s fast and furious, with nicer weather we have concentrated on the cod a bit more than last year and its nice to see it pay off with Colin Jones’ 31lber caught on a 20lb class Abu Suveran rod using a bright orange sidewinder lure. That fish was one of 3 we had over 20lb in as many drifts which I’m pretty sure is a first for the Silver Spray team. We have had so many good fish over the last 4 weeks there isn’t time to mention them all but long may the good weather and tight lines continue.

    Report on-board Just Mary

Another hot weekend aboard 'Just Mary' from Poole. Saturday 13th saw a 'United Nations' of Anglers aboard the boat with the Home Nations, our European friends and a Far Eastern representative all onboard. A few Bream and assorted sundries of Summer Species followed on from more Mackerel than many of my group had seen in a long time, 'a Mackerel Fest' as one Angler phrased it ! Third mark of the day went to plan and we quickly had two Blonde Rays over the slack water period for one of our French friends and Gary from Poole. These were followed soon after by an Undulate Ray for Zak, aged 13, on the trip with his Dad Paul. A first trip on 'Just Mary' and a first Undulate Ray for Zak. Job done 'Mission Accomplished !' Sunday 14th and another mark produced again more Mackerel, plus Tope, Dogfish, Gurnard and two exceptional Undulate Rays. My 'Apprentice' had both the Rays whilst his Swindon Bus Drivers looked on......The Undulates were 15lb 4oz and 16lb 0oz, both female fish, both on fresh Mackerel, he could have claimed a 'Shimano Mission Accomplished' award from SeaAngler Magazine except for the fact that I got him that award years ago !
Nice to see that my teachings live on and he hasn't lost his touch ! Well done Apprentice ! (see if you can recognise him ?) All the best to You All, Malc.

    Report on-board Just Mary

An interesting weekend 6th/7th July aboard 'Just Mary' from Poole. My hire rod group had better quality BLACK BREAM plus Pouting, Wrasse, and Mackerel, from a reef to the East of Poole Bay. Baits were mainly ragworm and squid cocktail presented on Skippers own two hook paternoster or flowing rig traces. Groundbaiting, as always when Bream fishing, was the secret to our success. On Sunday my more experienced Anglers had better quantity but a bit less quality Bream plus Mackerel (plenty, plenty and more in our crystal clear Poole Bay waters) Garfish, Wrasse, Gurnard, a single Pout, an unwelcome Tope and a bonus fish in the shape of an UNDULATE RAY of 14lb 8oz for veteran Angler RON HORN. Ron uses an old green 'Milbro' 8 foot boat/pier rod from the 1960's (I know coz my Dad used to have an identical beast), Mitchell 624 and suspicious looking braid which could well be the old 'Dacron'. This was Ron's first ever Undulate Ray on the first ever time that he has fished with me. It fell to fresh Mackerel fillet on a half circle 6/0 hook and flowing trace at slack water right at the end of the day ! Well done Ron !
