Flamer IV regulars Denise and Ian Youngs caught nice Undulate Rays on their latest trip aboard Flamer IV, Denise landed an Undulate Ray weighing 12Ib 8oz and Ian landed one weighing 10Ib. The successful bait was squid and mackerel cocktails on Sakuma Manta hooks. Both rays were weighed, photographed and returned alive.

I hope the weather improves soon I can get you out for the Spring Turbot and Plaice fishing and on the Wrecks for Pollack and of course on the Reefs and Banks for Rays, Spurs etc.

Pictured is Ian Youngs with his 10Ib Undulate Ray.

At last a day were the weather was good in between the constant storms. Two anchored sessions on Banks saw Undulate, Thornback and Small Eyed Ray caught along with Turbot, Congers, Whiting and the usuall Dogfish.

Mackerel and Squid cocktails proved to be the best baits.

Pictured is Denise Youngs with her 12Ib 8oz Undulate Ray which was photographed and returned alive.

Well what some atrocious weather we have had and yet more to come, like most other skippers I have only managed a couple of trips this month cancelling 9 on the trot, not good but that is the nature of our business. The best day so far this month was with Paul and a few friends who had 3 previous trips cancelled, this was just plucked out of the air and it coincided with the calmest day of February and bright sunshine, we went to the chosen mark and it seems as though the bank has been washed away by storms and was 1/2 its original size so we headed further out and came across a new mark which produced Spurdogs and Rays all day with a couple of Tope well over 30lb and as a bonus for Paul he caught his 1st Octopus. Towards the end of the day we were joined by a large Porbeagle that was more interested in chasing hooked fish to the boat than feeding we offered plenty of goodies to no avail.
Not much to report but the wife is very happy as all those jobs around the home have been done and I have plenty of brownie points in the bag for later !!!!.

A session drifting on a bank produced the first Turbot of the year on Flamer IV, a nice plump fish weighing 5Ib 8oz and was caught by Paul Milkins. This was follwed by a session at anchor on a different Bank which produced Blonde, Thornback and Undulate Rays along with numerous Congers and Whiting.
Paul Milkins landed his Personal Best Undulate Ray weighing 15Ib.
78 year old Peter Gould had right old tug on his tackle when he pulled up a 15Ib 8oz Blonde Ray and a Conger at the same time on his two hook trace, Peter was a bit knackered after that experience. Peter is pictured with his 15Ib 8oz Blonde Ray.

At last some decent weather cold, sunny and light winds which allowed us to venture offshore chasing Spurdogs, yesterday as we settled at anchor and the baits hit the seabed we were inundated with conger eels ranging from 8lb to 40lb, as the tide eased and the north west wind pushed the boat south we hit our target with the best Spurs being landed by Ian N weighing 19lb 12ozs and not to be outdone Simon landed a Tope of 35lb as the tide increased we came inshore and found some nice whiting, more eels and another Spur for Ian again weighing 18lb. Today my anglers choose to fish locally and found yet more eels, Blonde Rays, and some plump whiting as the flood tide increased someone suggested we drown a few worms and knowing how poor the harbour is fishing I jokingly said let’s go plaice fishing, what a great decision as on the 1st drift we had Plaice and Grey Gurnards followed by Tub Gurnards on successive drifts and to top it off Malcolm landed a small Octopus. After analysing the results and hearing what the local netters are landing I think this winter last years summer fish are still here.

It’s always nice to get the New Year rolling with a really decent rod bending day out, the first trip of 2020 did not disappoint. We headed to the offshore banks south of Poole about 20 miles and fished comfortably all day with up to 24oz of lead. There was about 15 knots of wind so we would have had a good excuse if the fish hadn’t been playing ball. Luckily that wasn’t the case at all and other than re anchoring at slack water we pretty much had fish on for the entire day. We had a good mix of blonde rays, spurdogs, bull huss, whiting, congers and even tope and smoothound. Top fish of the day went to Darryl Morrell for his 29lb 8oz blonde ray which was one of 5 rays he had. This bodes well for the next couple of months as the height of the season is usually mid March. Elsewhere we were pleased to get out every day between Boxing day and New Years Eve, with the tides being a bit on the big side we stuck to the fishing inshore. We had plenty of whiting in Poole Bay along with small eyed and undulate rays. Pushing slightly further out for the slack produced some better fish and even one small cod but we couldn’t get away from the congers which smashed a lot of the baits that went down. We are looking forward to our first wreck trip of the season in early February and hopefully some better weather at some point.
