Report on-board Flamer IV
My first trip out for over three weeks due to all the storms we have been having, with some regular customers and out of interest on the day the average was 66.5. We anchored on a Bank which produced nine species which included numerous Spurdogs, Small Eyed Rays,Congers,Smooth Hounds along with Undulate Ray,Turbot, Whiting,Pout,Dogfish. Squid and Mackerel baits proved to be the best. Pictured is IanYoungs with his lively 17Ib Spurdog.

Perfect weather conditions enabled us to head offshore roughly 12 miles to try out a few new marks. The day started off slowly with a few whiting, congers and small rays, but as the day went on we were able to take full advantage of the excellent tides that day which produced plenty of good sized thornback, spotted and blonde rays and to top the day off three specimen spurdogs.

Philip Butler, after taking Phil fishing last week and posting a report which included him I was informed that on that date it was his 86th birthday and the one thing he wanted was to catch a specimen size fish, well congratulations on reaching such a fine age and still fishing and congratulations again on catching a specimen Spurdog.

We managed to get out 11 days in February which isn't too bad at all, Inshore fishing has been getting better, we've had a great winter inshore, and now that the water temp is on its way up again the spring species seem to be feeding better with lots of Smoothounds in small to medium size range being caught in the later half of February, this along with 4 different species of Ray, Bull Huss, Conger, Whiting, Ballan and Cuckoo wrasse and the obligatory Pout and Dogfish make for a god fun days fishing inshore and has made for some very entertaining species fishing, the Reef Pollack are getting to a decent size now as well with fish over 10lb being caught on the inshore reefs in the last week of February, great fun on light gear. The fishing Offshore and to the east at anchor has been steady with Blonde Rays being caught over 20lb on the banks, the odd Spurdog, Ling and Undulate Ray and lots of Huss and Conger on the rough ground and reefs. Wrecking also improved a lot mid February, but a visit from the netters slowed the fishing down toward the end of the month although I still managed to find enough fish to keep everyone happy but nothing big with the best Pollack of the month at 13lb.
There are still weekend individuals spaces on a few dates in March, mostly offshore anchored trips. -

Stunning Spurdog weather
View Boats Page
Yesterday was one of the best February days I have ever had at sea, the weather was superb with flat calm seas and beautiful sunshine, we ventured out to fish for Spurdogs enjoying the smooth journey. We arrived just as the ebb tide was easing and once at anchor were quickly into small eels and the odd Spur as the tide eased and we thought it should get better the bites stopped completely as though a switch had been turned off, my colleagues to the west were still catching so a move was in order, as we were steaming I noticed a few contour lines on the chartplotter ahead of us so I slowed and came across a bank I had never fished before which was showing plenty of life. We set the anchor and started fishing which proved slow just as we were thinking of moving the fish gods turned the switch back on and all hell broke loose with spurs everywhere and the sizes were awesome with a total of 39 spurs landed and 30 of them over the Wessex specimen size the best falling to James at 23lb 4ozs.
In amongst the Spurs were some nice size Tope around the 30lb mark and a few straps. In all considering it is February and 18 degrees warmer than this time last year we had an excellent day including getting a bit of an early tan as a bonus. -

THE FLAMER IV POLLACK COMPETITION - took place in some lovely weather. The fishing was very poor in the morning but after trying several wrecks, at 11.50 it was like a switch had been turned on and the first Pollack came aboard caught by Keith Williams a steady catch of Pollack followed for the next two hours with Neil Cornelius leading the way with a 9Ib 8oz fish, as the tide eased we then moved to another wreck and the two best Pollack of the day were caught there along with a few others. The best lure of the day was certainly the Bubble Gum Pink Red Gill.
