    Report on-board Dawn Venture

finally the wind eased and we got out fishing!!!Had 4 boys on for a full day and it was a great days fishing.Initially looking for mackerel(which were scarce and very small(4")),we put the anchor down to sit and wait and fish thru' til the tide started to ebb.....we got 10 huss over 10lb and lots more were lost on the way up,we got 1 tope(27lb) lots of whiting(which were used for bait) and 2 common skate(54lb and137lb).the tactics were then changed and we had a couple of long drifts which produced many more whiting(4 at a time),codling that were just undersize(2 at a time) some haddock for the table and 4 small ling along with doggies and pouting. The last hour was spent in the harbour entrance for pollack and we landed about 20-25 pollack (biggest 5.5lb) and a couple of coalfish

the biggest skate is shown and took 45mins to land.

bookings are now being taken for 2017

[This report was written when Size Matters was operating from Plymouth]

We have been shark fishing for the last six day's, most of the lad's and lady's we have had onboard have never caught a blue or porbeagle shark before. We totalled 158 blue shark to 130lb and 1 porbeagle shark about 20lb over the six day's. The most we had in one day was 52 shark's a new boat record!
A lot of the shark's caught where 10lb to 65lb and at time's we where catching them on light spinning tackle which is great fun.
Next year's shark fishing date's are filling fast, give me a call if you fancy having ago with us.

    Report on-board Size Matters

[This report was written when Size Matters was operating from Plymouth]

It's hard work being a charter skipper at time's, trying to keep all your angler's happy and helping them catch the species they are targeting. A few day's ago I had my work cut out for me, the plan was to anchor for conger. So I picked a wreck I know has big conger on, after a 3 hour steam out we got to the wreck and it was netted. In fact all the wreck's in that area where netted, so I said to the lad's. We can anchor this one but you mite lose lot's of tackle, or we can steam out further to another group of wreck's and fish them. The lad's all said let's go further out after another hour or so steam, we got to the wreck's with no net's on. The only problem now was we had lost most of the ebb tide, so we had to drift around with bait and lure's until the flood tide kicked so we could get the anchor down. When we got the anchor down for the last two and a half hour's of the day all hell broke lose, we totalled 33 conger to 60lb and 25 ling to 27lb, between 8 angler's. To say the wreck was a live is a understatement, if you have never anchored for conger mid channel before I would highly recommend it as it's fast a furious fishing at time's and give's you a good workout. This charter turned into a 14 hour charter just to get the angler's on fish at no extra cost.
Shark fishing has been very good best day we have had this week was 27 blue shark to 95lb and 1 small porbeagle about 25lb.
Inshore on the reef's is a bit slow with a few ling to 18lb, conger to 20lb and pollack to 6lb. There is only a few date's available now until we move to Liverpool on October 17th for the winter cod season, if you fancy a day out with us please get in touch.

    Cheers

    Report on-board Size Matters

[This report was written when Size Matters was operating from Plymouth]

The shark fishing from Plymouth is the best they have had in year's, some boats are reporting over 30 sharks a day!!
Most are in the 20lb to 60lb range but there are a few over 100lb being caught. Catching lot's of small shark's is a very good sign for the future and show's the UK shark population is doing well.
The highlight of the last week was seeing three baby Porbeagle sharks caught, one of them was tiny and must of only been a month old. We just need to find it's mother now and hope we are lucky enough to land it. Also one of my angler's was using a water wolf camera above his baited feathers when we where fishing a inshore wreck for Whiting, the footage he has got of a Porbeagle shark is un real, it's probably the best footage of a shark I have seen in UK water's. He is going to edit the footage and let me have a copy, I will post it when I receive the copy. On the offshore wreck's we have been catching Pollack to 10lb and Ling to 22lb 8oz. On the inshore wreck's there is odd pollack and plenty of conger to 37lb, we had 50 in just 4 hours one day.
Over the next week I will be chasing shark's and Conger so if we get some good weather, we mite just get lucky and catch a few monster's.

    Cheers

    Report on-board Dawn Venture

the wind has been a problem for most of august and now into september , but on saturday with a better forecast ,we put to sea with adrians' boys from preston.scratching around inshore,we caught the usual suspects of codling, haddock, whiting, doggies, small huss, small coalies & pollack along with all 3 gurnard species, mackerel, herring and sandeel.A break in the wind let us nip offshore and it paid dividends...we got 4 huss,2x 10lb 1x 18.5lb and a monster 21lb 4oz!!
That huss as I was informed 2 days later would have beaten the scottish boat record by about 1lb.....so I suppose,we caught an unofficial boat record.....well done graham

    Report on-board Dawn Venture

had Tam Mckracken and his boys out today and it was a repeat of the day previous(27th august) with plenty of species showing up and 17 spurdogs with the best going 19.5lb....again the small whiting that were caught off this bank accounted for the biggest fish.
we also landed 15 pollack from the harbour mouth averaging 3-4lb with ian getting the best at 8lb
this bank is only 25mins steaming from portpatrick so its giving the angler more fishing and less travelling!

    Report on-board Dawn Venture

had a mixed bunch of boys out today and it was quite a hectic 6hhrs! sailed off to a bank that regularly produces about 12-14 species along with good huss, spurdogs and tope and it didnt disappoint!we had 14 good spurdogs and only 2 were single figure fish....most were in the 10-14lb range with a couple into 15lb and ian getting a 19.5lb and jonathon a 20.5lb!!(pictured)
there were also huss(biggest +15lb),haddock,codling,whiting,mackerel,herring,launce,doggies to name but a few.
the bank is packed with6-8" whiting and when caught and used for bait accounted for the better fish

    Report on-board Size Matters

[This report was written when Size Matters was operating from Plymouth]

The last two day's wrecking have been very good with lot's of Ling to 25lb, Pollack to 10lb and some cracking John Dory's. One angler Craig from Darby broke three personal best as a result he is booking again for next year. There is also lot's of tuna about sometime 50 or 60 at a time, smashing into bait ball's, they look about 80lb to 100lb, just not sure what species they are (wink wink ha ha).
Every time I get the boat close enough to cast a 150g popper to them they just disappear, it's only a matter of time before we get a hook up. Over the years I have spent thousand's of pound's catching them to 800lb all over the world and now there is a very good chance of catching one on my own charter boat.
I only have a few date's available before I move the boat to Liverpool for the winter season, if you fancy a day out with us just give me a call on 07999628511.

    Cheers
