Report on-board My Way 2
For a number of years now, April has always seen us bask in a mini heat wave, as a a few ridges of high pressures role over the country and reward anglers with settled seas and a good number of species and double figure fish, firmly wetting the appetite for the year ahead.

2012 however, has bucked this modern day trend well and truly, wind and rain has scuppered many days out for anglers throughout the United Kingdom, especially in our small corner of north Wales. With the harsh weather never quite going away, we appeared to be cancelling far more trips than we were actually managing to get afloat.
As reported a month ago, April was off to a flying start for us, with settled seas and a trip to the southern half of Holyhead deep rewarding the crew with huss & spurdog, the majority of both well into double figures. The weather turned foul the following morning, putting any thoughts we may have had of fishing the deeps on hold once more.
The fishing when we have been able to get out has been difficult to say the least. Inconsistent weather patterns have in a way been reflected in the fishing we have had. Inshore marks that have come up trumps one day with an early season haul consisting of dogfish, bull huss, spotted and thornback rays along with codling, coalfish, whiting tub gurnard etc. have the next day, struggled to offer even a dogfish.
Regardless on most occasions the anglers have all caught well, the struggle has really been locating the fish at times and putting a finger on any form of feeding pattern.
The weather cancelled one of our Easter children’s trips, but we did manage to get one day afloat, reduced prices, plenty of fish and certainly smiles and wonderful experiences for our young shipmates.
Mid April and the wind abated for a day and allowed a brief sortie into Holyhead Deep, sadly I’d forgotten to inform all the marine life. A hand full of huss, plenty of dogfish and a solitary spurdog for Tash, who stole the bragging rights from the male crew was all the reward for our efforts.
The rest of the month saw us venture out into the bay on a few more occasions, fishing large tides for a variety of inshore species inshore.
.
Hopefully the weather will start to sort itself out now as we prepare ourselves for a major highlight in the season aboard My Way - the influx of quality smoothhound. We have only a handful of spaces available for a normal day time sail, but do offer anglers the opportunity of fishing for these hard fighting small sharks during our popular evening trips. Sailing from 5.30 pm we return to port usually for 10pm. Please call or email if interested. -

Two days on the offshore wrecks resulted in a mediocre day on the first and a steady days pollack fishing on the second. The fish averaged 2-4lb with a few fish in the 5-7lb bracket. A mix of lures worked both days from 4 inch sidewinders to firetail jellies. Some pollack were also taken at around slack water by live prawn fished on skinny pink feathers. On the first day the fish were feeding on small sandeels. On the second day further west and in deeper water they had a mixture of prey, sprats, deepwater prawns and even a small lamprey was found in one pollack's mouth. One codling fell to mackerel baited hokkais. One or two mackerel also showing.
Weather is continuing to prove challenging with many days of northerly winds but on the days we are venturing fishing is proving to be ok.
I have room on 10 hour midweek trips on May 15th and May 30th. -

Yesterday the Danglers plus guests and friends, potential new members... there was a rabble of us any who, made for the bank in rather choppy conditions, to try our hand at some flatties.

On board Volsung with skipper Andy we tried to drift the bank first, which didnt work out too well with the wind and tide together pushing us off the bank. We did manage to pick up some small dabs and gurnards though.
We dropped the anchor and sat there bobbing... and bobbing and bobbing.. and then the fish came. We had plaice, lots of dabs and some good ones too, as well as many a gurnard of which some were kept for the pot too. Not for me though, I was out for the fun of it today. Heres Joe with a double shot of dab, and a very tangled rig!

Mike the strike was using a sea searcher rig, it was around 25ft long and had three snood, each 4.2 metres long. It worked, he had triple shots and a few of them! He had dab gurnard dog, gurnard gurnard gurnard and more.
New member to be Brain then went and nabbed a Turbot at anchor, on my rig, with mackerel I prepared for him.. I did tell him I charge per fillet on comission. Well done fella, it weighed 2lb 8oz.

The dabs and gurnards and of course dogfish continued and everyone bagged up. The tide had picked up by now on the bank so it was time to head in towards the reefs and see if we could snag a rock or two... I mean a pollock.
A fellow charter boat popped out to see us... The biggest LNG tanker that enters and exists the Haven, I think.

The first drop into the reefs and the fish were right under us, Pollack here, Pollack there and then a cod and the odd ballan wrasse for good measure. Of course coming to a grand variety of colours and shapes, fantastic fun on light gear.
A Ballan for Mike..

A Pollack for Andy's guest Chris..

A lovely reef Cod of 3lb 10oz for Chris' friend Alec..

Brian with a string of 4 Pollack!!!!

Keith thought he would feed the local contingent of black back and sea gulls. Nearly bagged himself another Gannet today too, dived for his bait.

We managed species 11 today, Dogs, Dab, Plaice, Grey Gurnard, Tub Gurnard, Turbot, Pollack, Launce, Mackerel, Ballan Wrasse, Codling.
So a decent session on the bank followed by hectic action on the reefs made for a very enjoyable day out on the boat despite the fairly rough sea, with good tea and chatter with skipper Andy thanks as always, good company with friends... but no cake. I have to own up mum did make some but I didnt get round to picking them up.. sorry guys. Next month mind.
Lets hope these easterlies dont last and some high pressure settles.
Cheers
