    Report on-board Bad Boyz VI

Thursday 30th june saw us sail at 10 on a wreck and reef trip unfortunately once we rounded the breakwater end it was a bit lumpy North stacks looked evil so we decided to anchor up for a couple of hours and wait for the tide and wind to drop off.
Anchor on the first mark produced Dogs, Codling, Whitting, Dab, Grey gurnard, Tub gurnard and Dragonets.
After 2 hours not much had changed in the way of the weather so we had a move on to some mud to target a few other fish and after half an hour we added Spotty ray and Plaice to the species list whilst the weather had started to drop off and then we decided to have a few drifts over an inshore wreck which a flying collar rig with a large Ragworm droduced about 10 Pollack to 5lb after this the wind had died off and allowed us to push round to South stacks were we saw plenty of mackeral for bait and within 10 minutes of stopping we had more then enough for bait and for the table so we started the steam out to an offshore reef with Pollack and Codling being on the agend.
We arrived at the reef about an hour before slack water and the tide running perfect which saw 3 Pollack to 6lb out of 4 rods, We only had time for an hour of fihsing untill we had to start the steam back in but luckily the fish were playing today after the hour we had over 20 Pollack between 3 to 9 lb but only a couple of small Codling.
The day was finished with an hours steam back to port with a big bowl of hotpot for every one whilst a few pics were taken and everything filleted.
Best lure of the day were Storm Sandeels but biggest Pollack fell to a whole squid.
Once again well done to the lads from Hull and only being back a few days from a dissapointing Pike trip to sweden they all left me with full cool boxes and big smiles

    Report on-board Bad Boyz VI

Another weekend of poor weather watched our boats fish in Holyhead bay.
The bay is producing plenty of Codling, Dabs, Dogs, Whitting, Pollack, Coalies, Wrasse, Bullhuss, Gurnards, Spotted rays and a few Thorny's ,Blondes, Mackeral, Ling, Rockling, Sea Scorpion, Pouting, Poorcod, Goby for when you species hunting.

Tuesday the 29th With perfect weather and a perfect tide we decided to to head around to South Stacks Reefs to try our luck, once arrived there was plenty of Pollack, Coalies, Wrasse, Codling and Mackeral coming up so we stayed around for a couple of hours to fill up on Mackeral for bait and a few fish for the table.
After trying a few more areas which was still producing the normal suspects we then steamed offshore to try a few Reefs and Wrecks with the tide easing and after a few drifts over the first mark it produced and few Pollack to 8lb and Cod to 6lb we headed to a wreck a few miles further which produced a few more Pollack to 6lb we decided to stick the anchor down for the last hour to try a few big baits not far from the side of a wreck.
After 15 minutes all hell broke loose with almost every rod bending over double and battling away the first Spurdog came to the net closely followed by 7 more Spurs then a couple of Tope and Bullhuss came aboard.
With time running out we had to up anchor and make our way back to Holyhead and with everyone tucking into a nice bowl of hot pot we totaled the days fishing and with a big success to only catch 2 Dogfish !
Looking forward to the Wrecks and Reefs again on the 30th!

    Report on-board Seren y Mor

Fished today with Chris Chawro`s party from Stourport on Severn. Weather perfect to start (for a change) light SW winds and sunshine, though it did cloud over in the afternoon with some drizzle. After trying two different marks the Mackerel came aboard in good numbers with enough for the day being caught in 10 mins. At our first mark the Smoothounds came to the boat in decent numbers with novices Rich Carter and Matt Turton getting amongst the hounds, at our second mark Dan Chowra stole the show with some nice Thornbacks, back to our original mark for a last go for the hounds were Steve Todd finished off his catch of 6 hounds with a nice fish of 15lb 4oz. An enjoyable day with the boys also catching Dabs, Bull Huss, Gurnard, Turbot and Tope.

    Report on-board Supreme

Well what can I say June started great and has now gone to pieces the weather has gone pear shaped again just when the Tope are really coming into their own showing up on some of the old marks from years ago.
On one trip Ken Dooley from Liverpool had a pb with one of 36lb and also had a pb smoothhound of 10 lb on the same trip check out the video on my face book under supreme sea services.
another group of lads from liverpool 6 in total 5 of which had never been boat fishing before managed to boat 11 tope to 35lb and we must have lost just as many at the boat due to their eagerness to try and bully them in.
just hope the tope are still about when this weather settles again

    Report on-board Bad Boyz VI

A weekend of mixed days fishing and with weather up and down all through the day its was a challenge at times to get to the best marks that have been fishing realy well.
Still a few Smooth-hounds showing at present and a few lager ones around.
The weekend has seen plenty of Dogies, Codling, Huss, Dabs, Poutin, Poorcod, Mackeral, Pollack, Wrasse and coalies with a few extras thrown in like small Congers, Plaice, Whitting and Rays.
With every trip seing more and more Codling and with a few around the 4-6lb mark the next year or so is looking up for the amount of Cod to come to the boat.
Best fish over the weekend went to a regular from Sheffield but not only becuase it was a nice Smoothie but purely becuase he landed it on a £4.99 kids telescopic spining rod with 10lb line in a screaming tide.
Out again through the week hopefully if the weather stays nice try get out for a few Tope :)
    Tight lines once again!

Just a quick one to congratulate Mr Mike Peely on his catch of a life time a Smooth-hound of 26+lb and off his kayak i bet it was a tremendous fight and landed on a 7/0 Tope trace with half a fresh Mackeral.
Unfortunately he was un-aware of the welsh record and looking at pictures it would have took it with ease.
    Well done matey

  • 06/2011 Fishing Report by Gethyn Owen on My Way 2 (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

    Report on-board My Way 2

My last report told the story of our successful smoothhound challenge, where Gareth Hughes won Fladen Sensor Tip and Multiplier reel with a cracking hound of over 18lbs, sadly the next few days afloat were lost to the weather once again. It’s fair to say the weather in March & April was un-seasonably good, and with that we were always going to suffer at a later stage, so with May all but lost and the weather during the first couple days of June playing havoc with the fishing we wanted, things looked a little glum.

Fortunately by the end of the first week in June the weather perked up resulting in a nice settled spell for nearly a fortnight. On the Friday we sailed with a group of young lads from and a few dads, trying out angling for the first time. The plan was to anchor up in some relatively shallow water and get the lads catching whatever swam by.

Predictably dogfish made up the bulk of the haul, however with it being a first outing for the majority aboard even the dogs were greeted with roaring enthusiasm.
Mixed in with the dogfish, the youngsters were also rewarded with a few codling, whiting, dabs, small huss and also a rogue ling of a couple lb.

With a couple hours left in our half day afloat we turned our attentions to slightly bigger sharks, smoothhounds! With hotdogs bubbling away on the hob and soft drinks flowing, we lifted anchor and moved the short journey over to some mixed ground to try our luck. Needless to say I was a little nervous, fishing for the bigger stuff is a waiting game and I wasn’t too sure how we would fair with so many young rods eager to catch. Thankfully we didn’t have to wait too long and we managed to snare a few before the day ended. No monsters this time, but sharks, excitement levels maximized!

That evening we sailed once again for a few hours hound fishing. This time the biggies did come out to play, all on board landed a couple double figure hounds, with Welsh Boat Angling Team Manager Robbie Roberts taking top honours with brace of hounds that each annihilated his previous PB of 14lb. With starry hounds weighing in at 19lb 1oz and 21lb 5oz, Robbie was King of My Way that evening.

Into the weekend and it was once again onto the smoothhounds for regular clubs from St Helens and Milnrow. Both clubs have had fantastic days afloat …. and, sadly the odd poor one, but, that’s fishing I guess. Confidence was high with me for the weekend, conditions seemed good and the run of hounds appeared to be continuing. Smoothhound records had been set for both clubs on previous trips, with sharks in the 19lb bracket, so it was certainly an all-out assault to try and break these records that had now stood for a couple years. It wasn’t to be for the St Helens guys, but plenty of good hounds came aboard, with top honours going to Carl with a nice Smoothie of 16lb.

On the Sunday, we had a fair amount of wind to start the day, so with a quick chat to the crew, we decided to fish inshore for a couple hours before the tide turned and ran with the wind, thus making a less lumpy sea. Inshore we were rewarded with codling, huss, rays, dogfish and the odd dab before we moved out for the main attraction this time of year, smoothies! Again it was a good time with everyone one the boat catching smoothies. Best of the day though went to John Settle, who caught his very first smoothhound. The previous club record held by Ken Costello, also on the trip, was just under the 20lb mark, John’s when weighed pushed the scales over 26lb! It was a monster of a fish, both large in length and also gut size.

With the WFSA record standing at 25lb 6oz, we proceeded to weigh the big starry a couple more times for confirmation. With varying weights, the lowest reading offered was agreed by all, but it was still a whopping 24lb 12oz; a new club record and an amazing first for a PB, well done John.

The following week fished with mixed results, the weather was not as good as previously and the hounds were not as prolific as had been witnessed in previous days. General fishing though again saw plenty of fish coming to the boat along with a few smoothies. Fishing though can be so fickle and taxing at times, on the 8th we had a great group of local rods with the thoughts of some big hounds, but we never really caught anything to get too excited about, we struggled to hit anything of any real note.

Then 2 days later I couldn’t go wrong, same mark, similar rigs, peelers from same source! June 10th was to be a day to remember. I was joined aboard My Way by Dave Barham and Jim Midgley; editor and photographer for the UK’s Boat Fishing Monthly magazine. I was nervous to say the least and fearing the worst given what lack of smoothhounds had proceeded that week. Many skippers will tell you, the best laid plans and all that, weather is good, bait is good, marks are traditionally good, time of year is good …. but the darn fish fail to turn up.

Waving good bye to DB & JM that evening we set sail once again. With a good bunch of novices on board we set out in similar fashion to the trip for the young guys a week earlier – scratching around to start with, ending with smoothhounds later on. Another good evening, with our day’s smoothie tally for June 10th ending on 38, superb!

Here ends our latest report, hopefully the fishing will continue it's great form aboard My Way in the months to come and fingers crossed that this weather also sorts itself out so you can get afloat where ever your destination may be.
