After a week of gale force winds, the weather gods once again looked down kindly upon us for this weekend. Residual swell on the Saturday gradually abated and left for a glorious day on the Sunday.
9 hearty souls arrived at the marina early Sunday morning to be greeted with calm seas, sunshine … and a cup of tea and chocolate bourbons.
After a brief review of the plans for the day, including an update on the weather that forecasted a southerly gale 8 by early evening we set sail for the mussel beds, were we would fish the last of the flood through to the first of the 31ft ebbing tide.
Fish were soon coming aboard, nothing too special to start; mainly dogfish, with the odd whiting and poor cod. As the tide turned a few huss came to the gunwales, with Wayne netting a nice 8lb bully, only to be out done by his farther with a double figure fish. Early indications showed it would be a tight match with Chris Gee, Chris Hamblin and Gareth P all contending the top slot.
Poor Tony though could only struggle on with a solitary dogfish whilst he looked for his friend Huey. On the stern Gaz joined in, he though had a friend called Ralph, though I did hear him call for Huey a couple times as well. B&B the night before is ace, too much beer, not so ace!!
As we lifted anchor to move into Church Bay and out of the fast running tide of the mussel beds, a quick tally showed that Chris Hamblin was putting his international experiences with Wales into effect and was edging Gareth out of the first place. Moving into Church bay and a quick look around and Leon was then getting to see what his breakfast looked like, I promise you, it wasn’t choppy at all, lol. In fairness though, it never stopped him fishing.
Once anchored up in the bay again the dogfish came into play, along with a few whiting, plenty of poor cod and some small huss. Despite his 3point huss, Wayne a novice angler dragged along for the day by his father was struggling to make an impact on the leader board, so a little coaching was on the cards. A little bit of advice on baiting up and also waiting for each bite to develop correctly was discussed to try and get Wayne catching double and treble shots of fish instead of the odd one as time went by. Wait… wait… let some line out, wait … put that bloody rod down …wait, ok reel in!! Well, something worked out right as Wayne then proceeded to reel in a double shot of dogfish and small ling. A brace a piece in his next two drops soon had the angler chomping at the bit for some more. Double patting, the method of preparing a second rig whilst one rig fished was then employed and Wayne’s catch rate soared.
With sausage butties for lunch, and more fish coming aboard it was soon time for our next move. As we lifted anchor at Church bay for our third move we could feel the wind freshening. A tally up here and now Gareth P was leading Chris Hamblin by a few points with Tony having found his sea legs and form rocketing into 3rd place.
Our first 30minutes on our final mark proved difficult as the increased wind swayed the boat around the anchor warp. Never the less the lads struggled on, adding more dogfish, a fair few whiting, dabs, poor cod and a couple pouting to score sheet. Conditions though were slowly deteriorating as the wind increased to 25mph.
Everyone struggled on, catching fish with Wayne continuing to bring in double after double.
At half four it was time to up anchor and get in before the wind blew too hard. Before we set sail I added up the score sheet and Wayne, the novice angler using My Way rod, reel, end tackle …. and know how – won the day by 1 point from Chris.
It was a great day afloat with a good bunch of lads made all the more sweeter with Liverpool spanking Chelsea ! -

26 to 28 Knts of South Westerly kept us from getting offshore but it really wasn`t a problem as loads of fish showed close inshore.
Just a short steam from Ramsgate Harbour and we found lots of Doggies, lots of whiting and a few codling.
Great to see the return of some big whiting, probably better eating than the cod ! -

Me and Azzy set off from Shrewsbury as we had managed to beat the Weather this weekend to get out aboard My Way with stand in Skipper Paul "The Chef" Whittle while Mr Owen was watching the 1 man red team take on Blackburn.
9am set sail and a few introductions around the boat before Paul went over the days itinerary. The day was one of Geths FUN COMPS and we wasted no time chugging off to the first mark, which was to be a drift over a reef.
No time was wasted as Ballan and Cuckoo wrasse started to come aboard as well as some nice Pollack and a couple of good size codling (looking up for the winters fishing if they come inshore).
We then moved on to the mussel beds on anchor for a chance at some larger fish so I thought, lets upgrade to a heavier rig, well all that got me were Dogfish as people on their 3-down rigs were pulling in whiting, codling and even a 13lb Bull Huss for a surprised first timer who was a pike fisherman in his other life LOL.
So I went with the crowd and switched and was rewarded with my own huss although not as large LOL and also a lovely Tub Gurnard to add to my species list.
After a scrummy chilli and gawjus Lemon cake we upped anchor and moved to "The Mud" lol where we had some of our best fishing. Whiting to so good sizes, and Dogfish were a regular for everyone but we also managed a total of 7 Ray aboard including my first raymond since I was 11 aboard the Viking in Barmouth and also my first EVER Spotted Ray (pictured top left).
Now it looks small but its deceiving because I'm a big bloke, huge in fact, freakishly some may say also Azzy had this little beauty (left).
All in all we must have boated about 300 fish between 8 of us which for late October has to be great.
me and Azzy ended up on exactly the same points in the end and took joint third with one of the first timers.
Again another memorable trip aboard My Way and the added excitement of the competition made it all more pleasurable and edgy LOL.
Thanks again Paul and Gethyn as I knew you were there in spirit and as a nagging text message tone LOL

Tides building nicely this week but we are beset by wind .

Luckily the cod and whiting are close inshore so we can get out to them in sheltered waters.
Squid, cuttlefish and lugworm proving to be the most effective baits, in that order.

Booked a trip last minute as an individual with skipper Steve Andrews on the supreme 2. It was a 10 hour trip on the river mersey, the weather was good. Had a great day i caught lots of rays, whiting and dog fish. The other lads caught dog fish, cod, dab and whiting.

For the first trip out on this boat i found it to be excellent, and the skipper was knowledgable and helpful with tips, and when we found that the fishing was drying up in a particular spot he was more than willing to move to another spot.
I think i can say for myslf and for the other lads that we can reccomend this boat whether you're an individual or a group.
There were three first time fisherman on board and they all had a good day using the skipper's rods and rigs which never failed to catch them some fish.
Id just like to say thanks to the skipper and all the lads on the boat for the food, drink, especially Jules as his curry and onion bargies hit the spot.
Hope to catch up with them all again sometime soon.
Cheers

Small tides and a bit of wind this week has meant the catches have been disappointing as we`ve not been able to get to where we`d like to go. Never mind the option of going shopping was worse ! Thankfully there`s been plenty of doggies and whiting pulling the strings at Kent charter fishing.

This week should see normal service resume as the tides are building and the wind going westerly, all in our favour for Kent charter fishing from Ramsgate.
