    Report on-board Grey Viking

Fantastic weather and a great day out ground fishing. It seemed the fish fancied a bit of sunbathing too as they were eager to take the hook and spend a while onboard. Plenty of fish were caught today. Bream were in abundance and one lucky lady landed a tope. Smiles all round.

  • 09/2009 Fishing Report by Bob Marshall on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

    Sep 2009 by Bob Marshall

    Report on-board Duke IV

After a long and interesting summer with excellent Cod fishing on the wrecks with good numbers of doubles, we are finding them inshore now early September, this is early and may, we hope, be a prelude to an excellent winter. Plenty of Whiting around, the Bass seem to be chasing these more since the decline in sandeels. Seeing 12oz Whiting being chased to the surface and the herring gulls trying to eat what’s really too big can be amusing as they fight over the unfortunate fish. The Bass fishing has been sporadic, shoaling some days and others can’t find them anywhere with just the odd fish showing. Quality Skate still around just last week Jed fishing with Nic Farmers group returned a pregnant female of 13lb. Mackerel still thin on the ground, perhaps due to the winds constantly stirring up the water, fresh mackerel the best summer bait for Skate, frustrating when you struggle to get enough. The Bass should stay around until October so on a good day it’s possible to get a Ramsgate grand slam of Bass, Cod, Smoothound and Skate all in the one day !

  • 08/2009 Fishing Report by Gethyn Owen on My Way 2 (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

    Aug 2009 by Gethyn Owen

    Report on-board My Way 2

    Goodbye August.

What a disgrace this summer weather has been! Personally I blame the education system, as whenever the kids break up for summer holidays, the weather turns foul .

The last 4 weeks has seen wind, followed by more wind, followed by the remnants of every Hurricane to hit over the other side of the Atlantic, wish they’d stay there. Our days afloat have been severely hit, so in all honesty there is very little I can off by way of a report.

Our best day over the last month was way back on 12th August, when John Angell (terrible blue nose) and colleagues enjoyed the early start of 0645am owing to the weather and neap tides. Fortunately the gang were compensated with a fair few tope, followed by baskets full of mackerel, with some pollack to 4 ½ and then ending the day with bull huss.

Since then, we have managed to sneak out on only a handful of times; and in all honesty the fishing has not been electrifying; considering the weather - consistent and enjoyable would be a little more apt I think. On the drift, the fish have not disappointed, wrasse are as usual in abundance with ballans, cuckoos and corkwings the mainstay, with a few goldsinnys thrown in. Mackerel and pollack have also shown, but not in any numbers to really crow about.
At anchor, typical inshore windy fish have come to our aid, doggies, whiting, gurnards, pouting, the odd dab, some decent sized huss a couple tope and a few more small haddock, a very rare sight this far south, Normally a colder water fish, associated with our fishing buddies in Scotland, we have landed nearly a dozen now; none of any mentionable size, but an interesting development in these times of Global warming.

I’m sat here now writing this on yet another windy day (06th September 2009), having not sailed for another 7 days. The forecast was a hard one to decipher yesterday as it showed 14mph at 7am, 17 mph-10am, then 21mph-1pm concluding with a 30mph at 4pm, the decision to fish or not was hard despite a southerly wind, that would in all honesty allow us shelter from the breakwater and Holyhead Mountain, Wind over a 29ft tide from 12pm would mean us sticking close inshore for a few doggies at best. Even the drift would be hard work with the amount of water as we reached the top of the flooding tide.

Isobars looked close together; 30mph later on could come early. What to do?

Cancel, you have to be fair.

Well, best call I think for all concerned, weather observations are showing it was 20mph at 7am and 22mph at 9am, think the F6 to 7 may be in early, so we would have been twisting at anchor, with the winds in our hairs (well those of you with hair), for very few fish.

Looking ahead, we are being told that September is going to be a far more settled month. The signs are promising – from this Wednesday (09th) the temperatures are climbing and winds are settling down. Fingers crossed, a nice run of trips and good fishing, would soon help us all forget what summer has had to offer.

Good luck and happy fishing where ever you try

    Report on-board Flamer IV

FLAMER III - AUGUST REPORT - The flatty fishing was just superb with plaice in the 4 to 5Ib plus range being landed and plenty of brill up to 7Ib 4oz and turbot up to 9Ib also being caught. For some reason the black bream fishing has not been up to what you would expect at this time of year. The reefs produced bull huss, congers, rays, cod, tope and lots of other species. The offshore wrecks still had some cod, ling and bass on them.My 5 day Flamer III Summer Festival was a great success and will be held in August again in 2010.The Flamer III species count for 2009 stands at 51 different species so far.Flamer III August Fish of the Month was awarded to Stewert Huggins for his near record Undulate Ray weighing 19Ib.(Stewert is pictured with his big Undulate Ray).

    Report on-board Sally Ann Jo

Winds and weather were not kind in August, however when we have got out the fishing has been good. Pollack to 14lbs and bass from the wrecks on lures when the tides have been smaller. From the banks and reefs a variety of fish including bream, bass, rays, gurnard tope and hounds. Probably the best fish this month was a conger of 50lbs from rough ground at night to Trigger on his first boat trip and his first conger too! Now the evenings are drawing in more opportunity for an evening trip targeting this species are available before the water cools and they move into deeper water. Hopefully the weather will be better for the comming autumn.

NEWICK CROWN HOOKERS SAC caught some smashing fish on their latest trip aboard Flamer III.Although the fishing was slow in the morning it certainly improved as the day went on.Simon Ramm was first with a cod weighing 14Ib.Then Mick Beech chipped in with a 3Ib plaice. Then a move to the famous Shambles Bank proved to be the icing on the cake with 6 brill and a turbot coming aboard in a two hour session.Guest Bill Walton landed two brill.
"Phil The Power Boswell" caught a 7Ib brill and a turbot with some of the other members adding to this flatty catch. The successful bait was mackerel strip.Needless to say the club were Happy Hookers at the end of their trip.Club chairman Les Whiteman known as number one unfortunatley failed to catch a flatty but vowed to improve and show the rest how it's done on the clubs next trip.
"PHIL THE POWER TAYLOR" is pictured with his 7Ib Brill.
