    Report on-board Just Mary

Hi All, just a quick report from last weekends two hire rod trips, Stag Party Saturday and a Family on a Day out on Sunday.
Plenty of Bream on the 'Mecca' and best one measured for the lads at 45cm, that's 18 inches of prime, in condition, bright blue, male bream and one of the lads won the pot !
We had well over 50 nice fish with all the females still full of roe and released.
Sunday, three couples from Sri Lanka, lovely people and such colourful clothes, plus four little girls from 3 to 8 years old and catching fish. 'Mecca' again and a great day out with them loving their fish almost as much as the Cricket that they are well known for. An SFP trip and a thanks to Stevie.P, Sheila, Rik and Jilly for doing a splendid job in their new 'hut on the quay' !

That's all, see you soon.....Sun's out and the solar powered phone just keeps ringing....

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

    June Monthly Report:

For the last couple of years the bass have arrived on the last spring tide in May, for us on Silver Spray they made us wait a little longer this year until the start of June. The first hit of fish came on live sand eels, not always available but I think I will make the effort to get them more often after seeing the positive effect they have had. Live mackerel produced the bigger fish as you would expect but we are still waiting for our first double this season, although 9lb 4oz isn't far off. To keep us interested over slack water the rays have been brilliant fun with all varieties making an appearance. After bringing a new PB to the surface on his bass gear of 22lb Dave Griffin gave a brilliant display of skill by landing a 26lber on a 12lb class rod and fixed spool reel, a perfect way to top off a good day on the bass.
The wrecks of the Herd Deep provided some fantastic pollock fishing on the return journey from Alderney. Using live mackerel, the bigger the better, fished on a 6 foot trace and worked very slowly up over the wreckage the hard fighting pollock just couldn’t resist. Colin Jones equalled his personal best of 16lb, a very well conditioned fish that fought all the way to the top in nearly 300 feet of water. As well as the pollock the cod have been coming in good numbers into the high teens, mostly taking brightly coloured lures but some on the live baits as well. It usually late June when the larger fish arrive off Poole so fingers crossed next time I’ll writing about some quality as well as quantity.

  • 12/06/2014 Fishing Report by Paul Smith on Rapid Fisher (Poole, Dorset)

12 Jun 2014 by Paul Smith

    Report on-board Rapid Fisher

Rapid Fisher has just completed her first 2 day Cherbourg trip with great results. In perfect sea conditions we set of with low expectations as the reports from the southern wrecks were not good.

We were pleasantly surprised as the wrecks produced good amount of cod & pollack to 14lbs and we headed into Cherbourg in good spirits hopeful that day 2 would produce the same.

The flood tide on day 2 produced no fish but as the tide turnt at lunchtime the fish became more active and we loaded up on cod & pollack with nearly every angler having a fish each drift!

Cherbourg trips are great for those who are looking for something different so call me now to see what I can offer.

31 May 2014 by Paul Smith

    Report on-board Rapid Fisher

With glourious weather Rapid Fisher went in search of cod & pollack on a long range wrecking trip. Pushing tide heading towards the wrecks to the west we still managed a respectable 20 knots. The first 3 wrecks produced no fish so I decided to push even further west.

To say it was the right decision was an understatement. All through the flood tide the fish were coming on board constantly and we loaded up with cod throughout. Not huge fish but good size for the table. On many of the drifts everyone was into fish.

A great day had by all and it took the crew until the harbour entrance to gut their catch!!!

I still have dates for wrecking trips available so call me now to book your place

    May 2014 by Paul Smith

    Report on-board Rapid Fisher

Rapid Fisher has completed her second Alderney trip with a bitter sweet tale to tell. Patrick Evans, a regular face aboard, booked the six day trip for his group a while ago but sadly Patrick was unable to make the trip as he passed away suddenly.

The weather conditions made for a tough crossing but with the hulls of the BW seacat we managed a respectable speed to the first of the wrecks en route. It proved unfruitful and the conditions made the drift difficult so we decided to forgo the fishing & head straight to Bray harbour.

Day 2 saw a swelly sea but we headed round to the banks to fish for the flatties. The guys on board had bought a reef for Patrick & decided to lay it at sea once the first fish came on board. The first drift produced a turbot & brill and the reef was laid and we all observed a minutes silence. The turboting was hard for the rest of the trip but we still managed 14 fish on one day with a nice double figure fish amongst the catch.

One angler had a shock when he managed to boat a potential british boat record blonde ray. Using 10lb class tackle, Bob Sutton, struggled to get the fish to the boat but did so expertly only for the net to be a bit on the small side!! After weighing the fish onboard the scales read between 35lbs - 41lbs but in the sea conditions it was impossible to get a confirmed reading & after 4 attempts it was decided to release the fish back as it was senseless to kill her for the sake of a bit of paper!!!

All in all a good trip & I'm sure Patrick was looking down with a smile on his face.

    Report on-board Flamer IV

Bernard Campbell age 62 from Liverpool makes a habit of breaking his Personal Bests aboard Flamer IV and has broken four in his last two trips..
His latest is a 5Ib 8oz Plaice beating his previous PB by 2Ib. Bernard was using 10Ib class tackle with a Sakuma two hook flatty trace that had plenty of coloured attractor beads on and a silver vibro spoon. The successful bait was ragworm and strips of Ammo squid.Bernard also caught a 5Ib Turbot on the same trip.

    Report on-board Flamer IV

During May the fishing was generally excellent with some great action with Black Bream,Rays,Tope,Smooth Hounds,Plaice etc on the inshore marks. The wrecks were very good for Pollack,Cod,Bass and Ling. Also two angling breaks were done with lads having some great fishing and also had an excellent social side to their trips as well during their few days in Weymouth.ANGLING BREAKS - A few days away fishing out of Weymouth along with the social side is a nice trip to do.The variety of fishing and the amount of different species caught at Weymouth is probably second to none.I am now taking bookings for such trips in 2015. So give me a call to plan and book your Angling Break.CHECK OUT my angling trips page on www.flamer4fishing.co.uk for more info on Angling Breaks.
35 different species have now been caught on Flamer IV so far this year. Flamer IV Fish of the Month fore May was awarded to Dave Palmer with his 18Ib 4oz Starry Smooth Hound.(Pictured).

  • 07/06/2014 Fishing Report by Malcolm Collins on Just Mary (Christchurch, Dorset)

7 Jun 2014 by Malcolm Collins

    Report on-board Just Mary

A good weekend of lovely neap tides meant that 'Plan A' swung into action and we pushed off to marks only really accessible and fishable to us on anchor with such 'slack' tides. Spring tides out there - forget it ! So Saturday started wet and the Sea was still unsettled from a three day blow but we knew conditions would improve with the midday low water. Mackerel hard to find but we had some frozen plus squid and ragworm and enough to make a start. Into fish from the drop as the tide was dying. A real monster, for one of my previous Anglers Myles from Poole, clung to the seabed and moved off uptide despite our efforts but with only a 20lb class rod, 30lb mono and mono 60lb trace (all hire gear) we were trying against the odds just to catch sight of it and after 40 minutes of struggle it came off. The heavy 6/0 had snapped on the curve of the hook ! I didn't need to see it to know what it was, it's happened before on this mark and one day we'll go after them properly. If you want to know then ask my mate Tom Greasty (San Gina II) to show you a picture of one nailed to Swanage Pier back in the non-conservation 60's. Ours will be tagged, photo, measured and released, and on the front cover of every Sea Angling mag in the Country, I can promise you that !
So back to our day ! Nine Anglers onboard and plenty of space ! Good Black Bream to 4lb were fairly constant and almost as regular as the doggies. Four Congers to 40lb, Smoothounds, and two nice Undulate Rays of 17lb 12oz to Mark the Coalman from Poole and Tom Whitcher, a Brickie, from Blandford with the biggest at 18lb 8oz. Only second trip with us by Tom who normally fishes for Carp, first trip 25lb Tope now this Undulate.....what next ? Well pleased to say he's back in a fortnight ! Good man.....he knows where to be !
Several other Rays never quite made it to the surface but that's life ! They get returned after a photo anyway so no harm done.
Sadly no Bass but that was probably due to the neaps and a lack of Mackerel, but lots of good fish with everyone catching and enjoying their day so just remember this, 'When the Skipper says 'You really should be on this trip.....then take note and book your place !'
We had a great time.....where were you ?

All the best, Malc. 'Just Mary', Poole.
