Report on-board Just Mary
Having returned from abroad visiting family and friends and with 'Just Mary' having completed her Annual refit and New 5 year COP Survey, 12 Passengers and 2 Crew, (60 mile Cat 2. COP), we are all set for another season afloat. The weather still hasn't totally settled down but the English Channel Sea Temperature, (according to the Met Office MAWS network), is now consistently above the 'magic' ten degrees celsius (10c). This bodes well for our Black Bream season just so long as the forecasters get their recent predictions right and we are in for a warm settled spell this Summer ! As I look forward to the first of these trips this coming weekend I'm not sure when this predicted weather will start ! Still, as Anglers and Skippers we are always eternal optimists and I'm confident that we will see better days, and forecasts (!) to come. My Commercial mates have endured a long hard Winter but in recent weeks I have seen for myself the quality of fish in Poole Bay. The Winter has been mild even though we have seen some terrible prolonged wet and windy weather. This has meant that species like Bass have remained in the Bay for most of the Winter months alongside other more usual fish like Cod and Whiting. Plaice and Sole have been caught recently and the quality and numbers have slowly increased. 2013 produced some good catches of Plaice on rod and line after the netters had given up due to the numbers of Spider crabs ripping their nets to shreds, hopefully 2014 will be another good year for us on the Plaice. So the season will be properly underway soon and I wish you all a good Summer, All the Best, Malc, 'Just Mary', Poole.

April Monthly Report

It’s now Easter bank holiday weekend and It’s that time of year when the variety of species we see throughout the summer have started to arrive. I decided to skip the report in March because there just didn’t seem anything new to write about, there is only so many ways to say that the weather is terrible and is making most of the fishing hard work. Things have certainly come a long way since then with the first plaice, turbot, pollock, bream and mackerel of the year all hitting the deck. Temperatures have picked up and the south coast has enjoyed some settled weather for a while now which has allowed the visibility in the water to increase dramatically, in turn this has brought a lot of those spring species on the feed.
Using the usual method of a short trace baited with rag worm and prawn the plaice fishing down to the west has been just as good as the last couple of years. The fish are well fed already and most tip the scales between 3 and 4lb. On the Shambles Bank there has been an abundance of herring which have proved brilliant bait for the turbot. It’s not been uncommon to see half a dozen or so fish during the tide up to about 10lb, nothing monstrous just yet but there is still time. Offshore we have finally seen the first pollock come off the wrecks, be it about 2 months late, good plump fish up to 15lb have been a regular occurrence. One of the most important species we target during the year is the black bream, once they arrive they stick with us until September time and really make fantastic fun on light tackle. I had the first hit of bream this last week, some years they can be a little small to start with but the average fish seemed to be around the 2lb 8oz mark and most of them males. Looking forward to another good season after such a positive start, off to Alderney for the first time tomorrow, hopefully the turbot are on the feed on the other side of the channel.

Report on-board Flamer IV
APRIL 2014 - the water clarity is a lot better now thus the flatty fishing has got going now with some good catches of Plaice being made. The biggest Plaice on Flamer IV so far was caught by Andy Wheal who is known as Pixie, funny name that as Andy is almost 7 foot tall, who landed a 4Ib 10oz Plaice, the successful bait being Ammo black lugworm and squid strip.Mark Laker from Kent had two double shots of Plaice and is pictured with one of them. The Turbot have also showed up with a few Turbot virgins getting the first Turbot. Some big Undulate Rays are still being caught with the latest one weighing 16Ib being caught by Roger Knight. Some summer species like Mackerel,Black Bream and Herring have also been landed. It loks like there are some Pollack and Ling now showing on the wrecks.

Report on-board Flamer IV
PLAICE R US - At last some settled weather and with small tides the water clarity improved enough so the Plaice could see the baits being offered. Tony Eadson's group on their first trip aboard Flamer IV took a bit of coaching but eventualy got the hang of how to catch a Plaice. Ravie Mandair who had been a sleep in the cabin all morning suddenly burst into action a proceeded to catch four Plaice more than any one else.Jackie Chan,Tony and Kes caught some Plaice weighing between 1Ib 8oz and 3Ib. Bajeed Shingh another of the group who had a job to stay awake for most of the day landed the biggest Plaice of the trip weighing in at 4Ib 12oz.(pictured).

The successful bait for all the Plaice was ragworm tipped with a strip of Ammo squid presented on a 1/0 Sakuma hook.. If the water clarity keeps improving the flatty fishing should go from strength to strength.
