Some lovley weather and steady fishing on the wrecks made for a good day. Cod,Pollack and a Coalfish were caught on a variety of lures but the pink ones did best. Keith Williams landed the Coalfish which weighed 5Ib 2oz, and is a rare catch for this area now. Keith is pictured with his Coalfish which was a first for him and now and new personal best.

  • 20/05/2018 Fishing Report by Philip Higgins on Mistress Linda / San Gina3 (Poole, Dorset)

    Report on-board Mistress Linda / San Gina3

Another busy week with plenty of good size Bream and Smoothhounds giving the rods a good bend, fishing all across the Poole Bay and Dancing Ledge marks we have covered the distance to find the fish, to the west plenty of signs and catches but the fish are very finnicky with more missed than landed and apart from a cracking 4lb Bream the rest have tended to be on the smaller side. The hounds have been fun with the biggest just touching 10lb not a big fish by some areas standards but good for our area. As a bonus a few Pollack to 5lb have graced our rods and provided much fun on light gear. This week our attention turns to what proved to be very illusive last winter COD, we are targeting them on some new areas to us thanks to some info from the commercial sector.

I hope everyone is making the most of all this decent weather we have been getting lately, after a winter as hard as that it’s like living in the tropics at the moment. Bream fishing has continued as it started off in last month’s report. We are finding good numbers, several days managing over 100 fish. Although the size hasn’t quite been as good as the last few years I’m sure the bigger ones will arrive shortly, on light spinning gear they are all good fun to catch regardless. With increased demand on inshore trips we have only done a few trips out into the channel on the wrecks, still a bit on the quiet side but now producing more cod than Pollock so it’s heading in the right direction. We managed our first trip over to Alderney of the season but unfortunately it was the week before bank holiday and the weather was testing at best. Well done and many thanks to the guys who came with us and managed a safe and fun trip in far from perfect conditions. Fishing on the banks was good with brill and turbot both in good numbers and plenty of bait to be had on the feathers. One of the highlights of the month has been some quality plaice fishing which we have fitted in on our bream days. Fish up to 4lb have been hitting the net which is always welcome. Hoping for more good weather over the coming months as our offshore stuff picks up more. Thanks to everyone for fishing with us on Silver Spray and out of Poole over the last month.

Last weekend we had the pleasure of Lymington SAC on saturday fishing their species league, mostly it went to plan but the Garfish remained illusive on Sunday we headed out to target Bream with the Gannet AC team who found plenty of small to medium sized Bream all day. The bites were very tentative and many were missed but a good day was had by all. Today we did the same and again the fish were very finnicky but we managed to boat plenty and again feed the fish on many occasions. I averaged a fish per drop so was well happy.

A lovley day on the Banks started with a session on the drift which produced some Turbot, with Gareth Brown catching his first ever one. Then a session at anchor to the East of Weymouth saw several Thornback Rays, Smoothounds and an Undulate Ray caught. Gareth Brown caught his first ever Thornback and proceded to break his Personal Best twice. Russell Salmon also broke his Personal Best Thornback record. Steven Clark caught his first ever Undulate Ray weighing 13Ib 12oz and is pictured. Later in the day I was in Weymouth harbour fueling up and Kevin Clark put some small ragworm baits on a small hoki trace and caught a Sand Smelt and a Flounder thus increasing the Flamer IV species count for 2018 to 31 different species.

  • 10/05/2018 Fishing Report by Lewis hodder on Pegasus (Lyme Regis, Dorset)

10 May 2018 by Lewis hodder

    Report on-board Pegasus

Well that was better! we managed 16 days at sea in April and 6 out of the first 8 days of May, pleasure to spending so much time at sea and on some days in some pretty awesome weather especially the recent May bank holiday weekend. Anyway onto the fishing, the start of April usually see much ore interest in our inshore trips rather than wrecking which is nice for a change. We've had plenty of Smoothhounds up to 7lb 6oz, a few Rays again only to about 7lb, pollack on the reefs into double figures along with a couple of early cod, there where still plenty of Channel whiting the last time we tried although interest in fishing for them is declining as the summer species start to move in, which brings me on to the Bream, in the past couple of years we have normally only caught the odd fishing during spring where catches further east seem to be very good but this year we seem to have a "colony" of breeding fish on our grounds which is great to see, in turn we have had quite a few Bream in the past week upto 3lb 9oz. The only thing thats really disappointed me about the inshore fishing s far is that we event been seeing many Plaice, especially as the seem to be catching them everywhere else but thats fishing for you.
Wrecking has tailed of somewhat recently with the Pollack fishing slowing up as it always does at this time of year and the fish also being a smaller average size, we are hoping to see the arrival of cod in good numbers soon!
Offshore anchored trips have produced some lovely Blonde rays up to 25lb and conger but unfortunately the Spurdogs are playing hard to get to the west of Portland this year for some reason, not long now and the Tope will be around and in July we will start Sharking! can't wait.
Hope to see you out on the water soon

At least the Bream are coming in thick n fast with good fish being landed, todays Wessex Angling Bream comp was no different fishing 3 marks and all produced good numbers of Bream but those illusive big ones were not playing, eventually a few came aboard but as is so often the case the person not entering the comp was cleaning up and Keith landed more than the rest of the boat but welsh team angler Brian Moss did find a few and came 2nd in the comp giving us Top charter boat status
