  • 23/01/2017 Fishing Report by Philip Higgins on Mistress Linda / San Gina3 (Poole, Dorset)

23 Jan 2017 by Philip Higgins

    Report on-board Mistress Linda / San Gina3

The inshore Whiting fishing has continued to be outstanding this winter, last weekend we managed to land our 1st set of 5 Rays in 1 trip, Blonde, Thornback, Small Eyed, Spotted and Undulate. Conger Eels are still providing plenty of sport on the lighter tackle. Keith Humphreys of Sea Fishing Poole fame caught his 1st cod of the winter during a 'boys' day out along with plenty of big whiting. Saturday we ventured out to sea to chase the Spurdogs but only managed more Eels, rays and Whiting, yesterday the freezing fog which did not lift all day meant a change of plans so we fished a little closer to shore landing plenty of Whiting,Congers and the 1st Plaice of the year.

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

The whiting fishing really turned on in late December with the biggest average stamp of fish I think I've ever seen off Poole. Fish between 3-4lb being caught two at a time is good fun on the light tackle. As I'm starting to see more and more markings of sprats on the sounder the whiting seem to be getting fatter and fatter, they really are one of the nicest eating fish around I just wish they stuck around for longer. Not put off by the small baits we have seen some smashing cod on the whiting gear, always putting up a hell of scrap. As well as the target species we have also seen a lot of mixed fish on the cod baits. Thornbacks, undulates, congers, smoothound and spotty rays are all in abundance. One of the highlights have been some of the big bass that continue to pop their heads up. Shane Barlow landed a monster 15lber whilst fishing in the bay with a squid and cuttlefish bait, the second biggest one we have ever seen. Fish of the Year for 2016 went to Pete Read for his 25lb 4oz spurdog caught in March, a brilliant catch even if she was a little camera shy before being returned. We have done our first trip out to the banks with success landing spurs to over 20lb and blonde rays as well. We look forward to doing more of this in the coming weeks.

    Report on-board Wild Frontier 2

We are always grateful for Allan Yate's trip out in January - it marks the start to the year and he is always happy to share the experience with readers. His report of fishing last week is below. Alan has a great website promoting his lures.. Seabooms.

Enjoy the read and book up soon - the 2017 diary is filling up: 07967 029031 or wildfrontier@deepsea.co.uk:

'First trip out of Weymouth 2017 wrecking onboard Wild Frontier II with skipper Clem Carter and his crewman Reed. Criteria for the day was to trial some new lure designs in UV colours to see how they fish on the Pollock, I was also going to try out the new underwater cameras. Fishing was slow in the morning and it took off early afternoon after skipper Clem Carter moved us onto more productive wrecks and one that produced some nice ling and mine fell to a new pattern Fast Tail in UV red and yellow. Third wreck we found more Pollock plenty of them too and my results tested out the new small Maggot lures AND fish of the day a chunky double figure Pollock was taken on the new Maggot lure to MOI so a nice result for a new lure. Great bunch of guys to fish with and some of the guys were on day two of their weekend fishing break and they had a good result again. Plenty of fish for the freezers all expertly filleted by skipper Clem assisted by crewman Reed who also showed his new skills preparing the fish for us. If today is anything to go by for 2017 wrecking then it could be a really good fishing year to look forward to Oh and no the cameras didn't get tested so will have to book another trip as soon as to give them a go. Images from the day enjoy what we enjoyed.'

My first wreck trip of 2017 produced a variety of size Pollack along with a Bass and a real bonus a Coalfish. Certainly when the tide was at it's peak the best lures were Bubble Gum Pink Red Gills fished on long traces and flying collar rigs certainly did the trick. Pictured is Earl Coates with an 11Ib 3oz Pollack, he also caught several other Pollack and a 5Ib Bass.

My first Reef/Bank trip of 2017 was fished on two marks at anchor west of Portland and a variety of fish were caught which included Bass,Pollack,Rays,Conger,Smooth Hound, Spurdog,Whiting etc. Pennel rigs of Sakuma Stinger hooks baited with squid and mackerel cocktails worked the best.
