    Report on-board Size Matters

The Tope fishing in Cardigan Bay has finally started to come in to its own, our best day so far has seen 49 Tope boated and returned, with most days seeing 15 to 30 Tope per day and this will only get better.

We have been extremely lucky to catch some cracking Tope to say the least, we have been using the shark measurements in inches,
girth x girth x length divided by 800 to calculate the weight of the big females to insure we don’t damage the heavily pregnant Tope.

Already we have been informed we should be weighing them in a cat fish sling like another skipper does on Anglesey.

So we decided to weigh and measure the first eight Tope we caught today and here is the results.

    Measured weight, Actual weight,
    Female 29lb 33lb,
    Female 25.5lb 29lb,
    Male 16.6lb 20lb,
    Female 52.8lb 51lb,
    Male 15.6lb 22lb,
    Male 15.6lb. 26lb,
    Female 16.2lb 19lb,
    Female 27.5lb 34lb,

From now on we will leave it up to the anglers to decide if the want to weigh the fish in our Skate sling, use the shark measurement calculator or simply unhook it at the side of the boat.

The biggest Tope went to Luke Brennan from Preston it was his first ever Tope and measured out at 67lb 8oz it was an incredible fish a real tank.

Andy Finney from Essex caught a monster Tope that measured out at 63lb and was his first ever Tope.

Colin Higham from Preston has been fishing for over 40 years and he caught his biggest Tope it weighed 51lb.

We have also had a few young anglers fishing with us catching there first ever Tope, just listening to them chatting about how good a day they have had gives me jobs satisfaction and why I love what I do.

Big thanks to Holy Mackerel for sending us some oil that we have used in a recent Sea Angler Magazine article that will be out in the near future.

Sadly we are fully booked in Pwllheli for the rest of the year, we do have dates available for Skate fishing in Scotland.

  • 31/05/2021 Fishing Report by Steve Green on Brigand (Brighton, East Sussex)

31 May 2021 by Steve Green

    Report on-board Brigand

After the last 3 days boating Bass, Cod and Pollock on the offshore wrecks today was a far more relaxed affair! Target was inshore Bream and as this was our first go at these this year there was a hint of trepidation - would we find them in the numbers and the sizes we wanted? Well that was soon answered and a really fun filled, non-stop, fishy day saw us boating around 150 Bream, a dozen or so Plaice and few beautiful wrasse. We always observe our local IFCA recommendations on sizes and really pleased to see this year not just minimum take sizes but also maximum sizes recommended. These bigger fish have avoided predation, disease and (until this point !) capture; the DNA of these fish allied to the fact the egg production of larger females grows exponentially is a very important factor when considering fishery conservation.
Great weather, great fish, great company so a wonderful day all around and I finally had an opportunity to have a proper fish and ended up in a head to head contest with Mark Pantony who between catching Plaice and Wrasse boated a pb tally of 28 Bream - do correct me if I’m wrong Mark! It was hilarious banter, great competition and most of all wonderful to see an angler who through sheer grit and determination had developed both offshore and inshore angling techniques to that level..... I smell a fishy Rob Robin Howard
A very chilled day and great to catch up with out friends who fish regularly and to meet a few new ones who I hope we see again, a real pleasure sharing time with you all today and Mrs Brigand is extremely pleased to have a few Bream in the fridge!
We do not have any full boat availability for this year but do have limited individual places for Cod, Bass, Pollock, Turbot, Bream & Tope so if you would like to join us availability can be viewed here www.brigandcharters.com
No photo’s today I’m afraid - I was too busy trying to keep pace with with Mark and his diabolical, underhand tricks () - besides, pretty sure you all will know what a Black Bream looks like

30 May 2021 by Steve Green

    Report on-board Brigand

    Another fabulous day out in the deeps with a bunch of top chaps. I thought I would steal Paul Coventry report of the day (apologies Paul!), refreshing to have an anglers view of a days fishing with us instead of ours;

    Catch report 29/5/21.

It's been a good days fishing. All of our guys caught. First stop was a bass mark then onto a bass wreck. Schoolies Initially but then a better stamp of fish around the 5lb mark saw several keepers. On again and we were into pollack. Again some smaller ones that were still mostly keepers but Ian Hamilton latched into and boated a 10lb plus fish , 10-4 rings a bell, only to be outdone by Andrew Kennedy with a 14lb 9oz PB. We then saw a couple of cod come on board....to Ian and Andrew again!
In all I guess around 20 keepers in the ice box and a nice sunny day afloat!
Thanks as always to Steve and Nick at Brigand Brighton .

Well done Andrew on his Pb Pollock and to those who took Bass, Cod & Pollock today - some excellent angling

Fantastic to be out on the water again after some pretty poor weather and great to
Welcome back Peter and his crew, always a pleasure sharing time with these guys.
Day started on a little inshore Bass hunt before heading offshore. Bumped into our resident Bass expert and mentioned that we wouldn’t be hanging around as we targeting Cod and couldn’t hang around. Rob picked up a nice Bass around 5lb and off we went. Pretty steady stat with a fish or two a drift and a good mix of Bass & Pollock, slack water and things slowed which signalled the time to move to the Cod wrecks. Some
beautiful prime Spring Cod boated and the odd Pollock as the tide built before heading home...... its great to be back at it

  • 05/2021 Fishing Report by John Peck on Lady Margaret (Poole, Dorset)

    May 2021 by John Peck

    Report on-board Lady Margaret

The annual maintenance is now complete and "Lady Margaret" is back in the water. Despite some very unsettled weather considering it is May we have had some good fishing for a variety of species.

There are currently lots of black bream around. All the local marks have been producing fish. We are still awaiting our first three pounder of the year but there are plenty of fish in the 1lb 8oz to 2lb class which give excellent sport on light tackle.

The plaice fishing has been hit and miss. There are some nice sized keepers around but you need the right conditions to get them feeding. The big storm late in the month disturbed the fishing for a while but we had a decent catch at the end of the month. We have also had mackerel, gurnards and bass coming aboard during the plaice sessions.

All this fishing is done with very light tackle and is available in local waters reached in minimal travelling time and sheltered from northerly and westerly winds.

Further out there are some nice sized bass. We did our first bassing trip of the year at the end of the month. The fishing was a bit slow but the fish were of a good average size including a fish of 10lb 12oz our first double figure bass of the year.

26 May 2021 by Paul Timoney

    Report on-board Seadog charters

Our plans for 200lb plus skate on Monday didn’t work at planned, the weather had other ideas for us! With strong westerly winds we opted for a hiding behind an island which got us nothing but a blank! Can’t win them all, but just shows that the water is still too cold for any general fishing on the mid west coast.

Tuesday was to be a much better day weather wise, so we set off to our chosen mark with that 200lb fish in mind. Once we got settled in on the anchor and got the baits down it wasn’t long before the action started! We spent 6 hours of constant skate battles, one rod would go, fish on the deck and then the next rod! Even had to bring one fish up myself . I’m really pleased the day worked the way it did for keen angler and Friend Marc, he finely got his fish, 210Lbs! All day we fished 2 rods, didn’t have to check one bait as the skate had the lot. Just incredible fishing. All in all 12 skate were landed totalling 1139lbs. I’ve no idea how Marc managed to bring up 11 of these fish in 6 hours

If you would like more info about our trips or to book please get in touch.

    Cheers Paul and Graeme

27 May 2021 by Paul Timoney

    Report on-board Seadog charters

Another couple of great days out in the sound:

Wednesday seen somewhat of a slow start for the bite to start, but wasn’t too long before the fish started coming to the boat. The day wasn’t with out it’s hiccups with a customers own TLD 25 breaking off at the reel seat! Not to worry the line was transferred to another rod and the fish brought up safely. Over all the average size was bigger than the day before with fish coming in at 182, 187, 119 and 195lbs.
Strangely enough there were another 2 skate landed, different fish but both had there tails missing, so no sizes there. Great to see them still healthy and compeating for baits

Today saw some more skate action but this time the greedy seal decided to pay us a visit for a few free meals! Skate landed came in at 195, 73, 99, 100, 72 and 201lbs! Great to see another magical 200

Very lucky with the weather too with some proper may sun and calm conditions. Great time had by all our anglers, well done guys.

If your interested in booking a trip please get in touch

    Cheers, Paul and Graeme
