    Report on-board Size Matters

In just over a months time we will be starting our winter season in our home city of Liverpool on the mighty Mersey.

From the end of October to mid November we mostly try to target the off shore wrecks up to 60 miles out, the weather plays a massive factor for these trips.

If we get lucky enough to get out Wrecking you can catch Pollack, Cod and Ling most are 3lb to 6lb with the odd double figure fish every now and again.

If the weather is not so good we can fish the mighty Mersey as a back up, targeting Thornback Rays up to 60+ in a day, Cod in to double figures, but most are 3lb to 5lb, Whiting, Dabs and odd Conger.

From mid November to the end of February we fish the sheltered waters of the mighty Mersey, targeting Cod in to double figures but most are 3lb to 5lb, Whiting and Dabs.

Every season is different and the biggest issue when fishing a tidal estuary is too much fresh water can be a bad thing for sea fish.

We have over 2300 packs of top quality frozen black lug and 96 x 1lb frozen boxes of calamari squid in storage, this is only available to anglers fishing onboard Size Matters.

We also have a full range of top quality Shimano fishing tackle available to use free of charge.

  • 09/2019 Fishing Report by Aaron Smith on Bad Boyz VI (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

    Sep 2019 by Aaron Smith

    Report on-board Bad Boyz VI

Over the last 8 days we've managed to sail 7 of those days, we have had a great veriaty of trips booked in and some unusually settled weather!

We ran our first Bass and Bardsey trip of the year, although we pulled hundreds of fish out there was very little sizeable fish about, we finished the day with Bass to 6lb, pollack to 6lb, coalies, codling, big ballens wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, mackerel and weaver's.

The tope fishing continues to be good close to home with 9 to the boat being our best day and landed a number of tope on every dedicated trip. A male tope of 44lb being the best.

We had another bash on the sharks, this turned out to be a disappointing day with very little bait around, 1 hit for the day resulted in a miss. We did land Tope, Spurdogs, Huss and whitings whilst drifting and a sort spell at anchor brought a number of Huss and a lovely male tope just over 40lb.

The Wrecking side of things now..... we did 2 days this week offshore, the first day we tried the wrecks to the SW around the shallower side knowing the deep water would be tailing off. A fairly slow start with 10 pollack to 10lb but after lunch we made a fair move and got reward with around 45 fish over the following couple of hours to 14.4lb. The lads made the call that they had all the fish they needed for the table and can we anchor up, we then got plagued by 10-14lb huss most drops.

After day 1 on the wrecks not being exactly what I wanted, I digged out my catch logs for the last 6 years of wrecking and made a plan for our second day, this proved a great point as we managed over 120 fish, Pollack to 10.8lb, Coal fish to 7lb, Codling, Mackerel, pouting, grey Gurnard and a lovely Ballen wrasse that took fancy to a 6oz fast jig 30 miles offshore we had the done day and back along side after 7 1/2hr at sea, relaxed in the sun with a brew and got the remainder of the fish filleted for the lads.
Red letter day for the time of year

21 Sep 2019 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

The September competition comes to an end tomorrow here at Whitby and with us cancelling the day today for a fresh South Easterly, Nigel Hall who is currently leading it with a fine ling of 24 lb 3 oz on the Shy-Torque III is starting to sweat a tad!!

The lads yesterday enjoyed some fine weather and some nice fishing on the morning until the breeze freshened from the South East and spoiled things with a racing drift.

Young Joe Bakewell and his brother from Leicester fished with us and they had a nice few fish between them. His best, a ling of 14 lb which gave him the daily 1st prize . Joe was using a basic 8/0 single hook trace with a fresh piece of mackerel for bait.

Hopefully the weather will sort itself for tomorrow and give the lads one last go at landing the big one!

Cheers for now and tight lines

  • 19/09/2019 Fishing Report by Colin Penny on Flamer IV (Weymouth, Dorset)

19 Sep 2019 by Colin Penny

    Report on-board Flamer IV

Chris Harris and friends joined Flamer IV for their annual 5 day Angling Break, we managed to fish 4 out of the 5 days because the last day was cancellled because it was just too windy. We did sessions on Reefs and Banks at anchor and drifting and despite a nagging easterly wind on most of the days the group manged to catch some good fish and plenty of species - Black Bream, Turbot, Brill, Bass, Undulate Rays, Thornback Rays, Blonde Rays, Spotted Rays, Gurnards, Tope, Congers etc. Special mentions for Mark Cooper who caught three Undulate Rays in one session and Bruce Dellow caught a hat trick of Brill. The guys returned the majority of the fish they caught including the 6Ib Bass, just keeping a few Black Bream and one Turbot to eat,"Well Done Guys". Of course the social side of their Angling Break is always important, with good banter on the boat and the guys frequenting pubs and restaurants in the evenings, all adds to the fun of the few days away. The group have booked again for 2020.
Pictured is Mark Cooper with his 6Ib Bass

Weymouth Angling Breaks - Book Now, Don't miss Out, *** NOW TAKING BOOKINGS FOR next year ***
A few days away fishing out of Weymouth along with the social side is a nice trip to do.The variety of fishing and the amount of different species caught at Weymouth is probably second to none. There are plenty of places to stay which are angler friendly and some excellent places to wine and dine around the harbour and in Weymouth Town centre. If you want to try a Weymouth Angling Break then contact me, I cater for whole boat charters and individuals.

Been a while since I posted a report.
Boat suffered a starter motor breakdown and lost a couple of weekends as a result.
Back out last weekend and found plenty of bass, Thornback Rays and smoothounds. Also a few whiting have appeared.
Fingers crossed the cod make an appearance this year

The weather is looking a bit dodgy for the weekend and the final run in the festival with a fresh South Easterly predicted.

Let's hope we can get a few more on the prize board for the lads in the next couple of days.

Room next week if you fancy a run out. Great tides too!!
