Yet again a pleasure to welcome aboard the Veterans for their last scheduled trip of the season. Hopefully we'll get many more arranged going forward as the first few have been a resounding success! As always, massive thanks to Amelia, who works tirelessly behind the scenes to make these incredibly rewarding trips happen.

We had a cracking father / son day out, playing on the inner rough grounds and some small inshore wrecks; some great stamp of Codling, Pollack, Coalies, Whiting and plenty of Mackerel for both sport and the pan.

Huge thanks to the guys and girls for a short run out yesterday. Slippy Limpets found some lovely Codling on the shads, and Barry's son found a chunky Ling on bait. Plenty of sport on mackerel, whiting and pouting. We can't wait to see the line art created by Amelia's friend @northern_sky_art on instagram, as she was sketching all afternoon!

    Report on-board Sweet William

It was a wild and windy day yesterday, to welcome back the guys from Manchester, but we persevered on the wrecks until the last drop. The guys fished hard and found approximately twenty Codling up to 9lb and thirty Ling up to 12lb, with lots of haddock, whiting, pouting, coalies and of course plenty of mackerel for the pan. It was a tough day, but the lads held the line and it came good in the end.

We thoroughly enjoyed welcoming Gareth, Christine and the guys back aboard for a full day trip. The kids were fishing well, with young Travis grafting non-stop the entire day! Cracking day out, and we'll be seeing them again soon hopefully!

It was absolute pleasure to welcome aboard Julien and his three boys (all the way from Wales). Notwithstanding the rain bouncing chest high, we managed to pick a weather window for a few hours where the wind was light and sea conditions temporarily calm. We initially introduced the guys to some mackerel fishing, and once they had the hang of it, quickly switched rigs and put a little bit of bait on to see if they could find a codling for tea...it didn't take them long! Great craic and banter throughout, and we appreciated the pics of their incredibly prepared evening meal; have a great holiday and safe journey!

Aside from the bass the hounds keep coming in too, some days there are lots of smaller fish other days the stamp can be great. As is the sport from these hard fighting fast fish which never disappoint. Although bass and hounds make up most of our catches on general trips there's still one or two rays, dogfish, whiting, dabs and other species mixed with them. Offshore we are mainly targeting tope and bass at the moment. I might put together a fatty trip if there's enough interest.

  • 03/06/2024 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

3 Jun 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

The weather forecast today wasn’t settled enough in the morning to run the 14hr trip we had booked in the diary, so unfortunately we had to put that to one side.

With the winds due to fall away from midday I thought it would be a great opportunity to have a few hours fishing in the afternoon/evening with a few mates……none of them were available so I went with the three reprobates in the pictures!!

Ian, Dave and Tony love their lure fishing (as do I) so we agreed that we would try fishing hard inside on the rough ground where we Uptide fish in the winter. It is fantastic fun and can be very productive on light tackle.
We all had three or four rods setup each, so we could quickly switch between tactics. A regular bait fishing rod with a muppet trace, a lighter shad fishing rod, a light lure rod and/or a slow pitch jigging rod.

Initially we ran North a couple of miles, stopping occasionally to check the water colour/clarity. We generally find the clearer water is necessary for the lures and shads to work properly. What I saw didn’t thrill me at all. It was very green and with not much clarity, I thought we would struggle…..and initially we did!

We all tried for over an hour in the rough ground with the light tackle, but all we managed was two lost small fish and a tiny Whiting. Plan B was definitely required. I thought our best chance of success was to try a couple of wrecks, where hopefully the fish would be a bit more concentrated, so we moved out to a nearby one.

This had the desired effect and first drift three out of four rods had a fish. We initially went with squid on muppet traces, but then quickly started switching methods as we knew there were plenty of fish around.
For the next few hours we fished away and caught fish on all four methods, but the highlight was definitely at slack water when the four of us were using 10-50g jigging rods, 4oz leads and small shads in 40m of water catching quality Codling of 4-5lb.

It was an absolute pleasure to spend a few hours with likeminded anglers and we never stopped learning new things. Definitely my most enjoyable session this year….thanks lads
