    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

It’s been brilliant to finally string a few days together and great to see a few anglers today who I’ve cancelled countless times due to poor weather. We had a middle of the road tide today (4.8m) and it was destined to be a mixed day. Wrecks in the morning with the really light winds and then ground fishing in the afternoon if the South Easterly lifted.

We started the day off chasing a few Mackerel. They’re here, but they’re still patchy. We tried three different spots but only took around 20 or so fish. That was enough of the day wasted, so we dropped onto the first wreck four miles from the pier ends. We had half a dozen drifts, taking fish every run through. But to be fair, the sport was similar to the last couple of days. Five to ten Codling/Ling from the wreck but nothing massive. After half an hour or so we moved on, and this formed the pattern for the remainder of the Ebb Tide. Pinch a few fish, then move on.

With the lack of Mackerel, we didn’t get pestered by strap Ling too much, with the muppet traces baited with squid taking a majority Codling catch. We got absolutely hammered by Pouting today for one reason or another, with them either stripping the baits off or hanging themselves which was frustrating. Jamie Britton caught so many that I wished I’d brought him a keepnet (only kidding Jamie)!

The sport dried up at slack water, which coincided with the South Easterly wind lifting and making the lines stream. We tried a couple more wrecks, but I thought it was futile and opted to run back to the rough ground at three miles to finish off the day. This actually didn’t turn out to be a bad move as we took some nice Codling and a few Ling to finish off the day on baited Hokkai’s.

The fishing certainly wasn’t exceptional, but I’ve had a lot worse days. The company was fantastic with lots of laughs throughout, mostly at my expense; but I love a bit of banter!! Thanks lads.

  • 20/06/2024 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

20 Jun 2024 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

After the trips on Monday and Tuesday, we decided to have a complete change in direction and scenery yesterday and we ran North.
The plan was to end up on a bit of scrap towards Tees-Bay which I know doesn’t get touched too often.

We dropped on a couple of wrecks en-route and picked a few fish up, but no real great shakes, probably around a couple of dozen between them.

Fish yesterday were starting to take the artificial lures once more and the shads and jigs were working again which was great to see.

My old mate Derek who always fishes the front of the boat was alternating between the baited rigs and jigs and probably had an equal number with both methods.
He ended up with around a dozen fish for himself off those two wrecks.
The other lads taking fish too with Kev doing ok with a half dozen reasonable Codling. Odd other fish dotted around the boat.

We finished off on a small piece of wreckage 22 miles from the harbour and took another dozen or so there.

Mark, who I hadn’t met before had a good Cod to the surface which looked like a double figure fish. I had the equipment ready to board the fish and at the last second it flicked its head and swam free.
It hadn’t shook the hook out, his main line parted!!
On inspection we saw that his line had been grating in the wreck and had weakened it.
The one that really did “get away!”

A nice day on the water with a great mixed bunch of guys. The weather was also fantastic too and actually started to feel like Summer at last!

    Cheers Rich

  • 19/06/2024 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

19 Jun 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

The last couple of days have been really enjoyable aboard Sea Urchin. Completely contrasting; but great fun, none the less.

Tuesday saw Sea Urchin regular Alan and his friends take the boat as usual. We had agreed to do a 12hr trip, so were away just after 0500hrs. Everyone wanted to try for a few Mackerel, so we had a go, and for the first time this year, we caught loads of them. Once everyone had a bucket full for bait, we set about trying a few wrecks while the tide was against the wind. We ran out to try a couple in the five mile stream and picked up a few fish each drift. Nothing photo worthy, but there were some decent pan-sized Codling to the Squid muppet traces.

As we had plenty of fresh Mackerel, that was used by the majority, so we got a lot of strap Ling sniffing it out during the day. We ran out to a wreck at nine miles for the slack water period and it wasn’t until the Flood Tide came through that it sparked up a bit. Henry Fong taking the biggest fish of the day, with a Ling of 13lb. We finished off with some more Mackerel as the wind behind the tide made it tough when bait fishing.

Today was one of “my” fishing days. Four of us went out to do some Lure fishing. Starting off hard inside, the water clarity wasn’t great and we never had a sniff. Pushing out, we dropped on a couple of wrecks on the way and had limited success. Simon West “cheated” and caught a few Codling on a muppet trace with squid, but Tony Firman also had a couple of fish on the Slow Pitch Jig which was good.

Ultimately we spent the best part of the day on a strip of rough ground at five miles. Tackle wise, we used Lure Rods in the 10-50gm range, 5oz leads and small Shads. Even though we were fishing in 50m of water, you could still fish effectively with good tackle control. During a purple patch the Shads were taken in the first couple of lifts, but using the small light gear, every fish was a battle. It’s become my absolute favourite way of fishing and I lost count of how many we caught and also the different species.

    Fantastic fishing in fantastic company

    Report on-board Luna-Sea (Merlin)

    ***Fishing Report 19/6/24***

It's been very hard on the Rhyl Boats over the past few weeks with the continuous poor weather but we finally have a clear run for a while.

Today we had an 8hr Charter and started on the Bass. Once on location we just couldn't go wrong, birds diving Bass bubbling at the surface. A very happy bunch of Anglers indeed.

We then head further offshore and targeted Ray's which also kept us busy. With all anglers having at least one a piece.

Finally we had the last hr on the Tope and wow, they were very active indeed. The 1st one landed withing 5mins of anchor drop. After we were into double figures our party wanted to head in earlier than planned to get home and enjoy their earlier catch.

  • 18/06/2024 Fishing Report by Steve Green on Brigand (Brighton, East Sussex)

18 Jun 2024 by Steve Green

    Report on-board Brigand

A fabulous day out fishing the Offshore wrecks today with an even more fabulous crew!
An early start to get where wanted to fish and we of course had a plan which started with putting the hammer down and heading out far. Water clarity improved by the mile and was perfect when we arrived out our first wreck where the crew were immediately rewarded with good quality fish. Pollock, Cod & Bass all coming to the net in quick succession as the tide kicked in and it was constant action until the time came to catch the tide for the next stop. A real mix of fish coming over the next couple of wrecks including a fantastic 7lb 3oz Tub Gurnard which looked ready to burst skilfully landed by Adam and very sportingly released to (hopefully) have an opportunity to pass on that excellent DNA.
    Species count for the day;

    Jumbo mackerel (45cm+)
    Bass
    Cod
    Pollock
    Coalfish
    Bream
    Wrasse
    Launce
    Tub Gurnard
    Red Gurnard
    Scad
    Pouting (of course!)
    Whiting

Alex Brown and Simon Clark of course both in the thick of it with Bass, Pollock & Cod but hats off to Adam for gamefully releasing a magnificent fish and for taking the fact that we almost left without him this morning in his stride..... my apologies Adam!

We have very limited availability for these long distance Offshore trips this year but if there is sufficient interest we might be persuaded to lay on a couple more which would be absolutely tide dependent so a little flexibility required.... just let us know if your keen!
Thanks all for a wonderful day on the Ocean and bravo on your catches today
    Best wishes

It was a bit of a windy and choppy start today, but it settled down nicely as the morning progressed and turned into a warm and sunny run out.
We found some lovely Codling, way too many Ling to count, a great stamp of Pollock and a good number of Haddock, Coalies, Whiting, some jumbo Pouting and of course Mackerel (although they were everywhere, they seemed to be a little more patchy than recent days).

Lots of mackerel, sunshine and rainbows in no particular order! Possibly the most rewarding short trip so far this season. :-)
