Fishing Report by Scott Belbin
on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)
Apr 2018 by Scott Belbin
Report on-board Galloper
My apologies Its been a while since my last report on here again. the cold snap that hit us in the early part of the year had a negative affect on both the fishing and our bookings unfortunately. Thankfully the weather has sorted its self out now and so has the fishing so everything is back on track. As the water has warmed up the thorn-back rays have appeared in abundance as we have come to expect in recent years. The fish are now fairly wide spread so we can see good fishing in most weather conditions should we need to. There have been a few smooth-hounds and the odd bass mixed in too. This is a sure sign that summer is not too far away. the codling have been mid water feeding on the herring that moved in after the cold snap. This in turn has meant we have seen very few on rod and line. However the last weekend saw a few come out so hopefully we will see a showing of codling mixed in over the next week or so before they move off.

The ‘galloper’ is out of the water this week for a polish, antifoul and general jobs as well as her 5 year survey. She will be back in the water by Saturday with a fresh 60 mile code of practice on her.

GREAT NEWS - THE PLAICE ARE BACK -
View Boats Page
During Reg Phillips and friends Angling Break last weekend I decided to go and see if the mussel beds had returned and was there any Plaice there. I was over joyed to find they had and we caught some lovely Plaice which were all in prime condition and stuffed full of pea mussels. The average size was very good with 3 to 4Ib plus fish being landed and two days in a row the first Plaice to be landed were over 4Ib. Weight of Plaice pictured 4Ib 4oz caught by Matt Hamilton
DON'T MISS OUT - I have added trips to include Plaice fishing to my 2018 bookings diary some of which are 10 hour trips which I know are popular as they can give you extra time/chances on the Plaice. Check out my bookings dairy's on my web site www.flamer4fishing.co.uk and/or give me a call on 07968972736 or send me an email to colinpennyfu2@gmail.com to make a booking. -

Is it the return of the Plaice?
Well yesterday (16th April) Was are first go at looking for a Plaice or two and with a few other boats trying earlier the week before are hopes were high that we might find some of these red spotty fish. We wasn't disappointed after an hour waiting for the tide to start changing for the better the fish soon started biting and we managed to pull a few out, what was even better all the fish we caught were full of pea mussel so is this the return of are once famous mussel beds? At the moment it is still very early to tell if the Plaice are going to be around all year and happy with there new homes so are hopes cant get to high just yet but time will tell, but im going to put a few dates up for Plaice and Turbot so we can keep testing the area to see if we are lucky enough to have them back.
Dates for Plaice,Turbot and Brill.
May 15th 11 hour trip (2 two trys for the Plaice) £60pp
May 22nd £55pp
June 4th £55pp
June 19th £55pp

Report on-board Mistress
Its been a while since our last update. So thought id get something posted up.

The weather has been very unsettled here at Whitby. We keep sneaking in the days though.
With the weather being unsettled its kept the water coloured inshore. The water is coloured until around the 20mile where some of the boats have fishing.
We've stayed inshore uptiding. With many good days. Although theres nothing very big coming out all between 2lb and 4lb theres a lot of them.
Our best day last weekend saw us boat around 90 codling with throw backs. 3 of the lads had over 20 cod each. With the weather turning for lunch on the sunday we did a half day for around 45 codling between 6 of us best lad taking 15 keepers (40 cm +)
Best bait was black lug and unwashed squid, which can be supplied if required.
With some settled weather aproaching the water should begin to clear and the inshore wrecking should start producing.
If you fancy a trip with me on Mistress here at Whitby give me a call or text on 07977 436903
Pictured is mistress regulay Kelly gillings from Middlesbrough with a codling around 5lb, well done kelly -

Enjoyable day afloat yesterday the fishing however not as prolific as previous trips.

Plenty caught with a good mixed bag of fish, but the numbers seemed to be lacking.with us having to move continually to locate the fish.
Assume the 20knots of wind early morning didn’t help, but it soon changed to a lovely calm sun drenched afternoon.
