Report on-board Bessie Vee
My name is Tom Lessels, 53 years old, I travelled from my home in Stonehaven, on holiday again in June to Mevagissey (for the 6th year in a row) to fish on Dave Hunkin's," Bessie Vee". Wreck fishing for Conger, Pollock, and other species. I had 5 trips out this holiday during June along with other regulars and holidaymakers I have met on previous years. After stopping off for mackerel on route he anchored-up over a wreck where I landed 8 Conger all together. This was the best number of awsome quality fighting eels in one day ( 16 June 2010) for me so far, ( all catch-and-release). I was exhausted each time but was kept revived with cups of hot tea and verbal abuse from the 'galley-boy'.(Skipper Dave).

On another day he took us over Pollack, some big double figure fish which kept diving back into the wreck until you eventually gained control, lost a few stonkers when I had failed to slacken my reel drag sufficiently. Jelly worms( Dave's secret colour), Red-Gills and Sidewinders all worked.
I have had three personal best wreck species, Conger, Ling and Pollack all with Dave, all qualifying for the Shimano Badge. He picks different wrecks each trip covering several at distance, weather permitting, each time.
These trips with Dave set me up for handling bigger fish and eels, and a good variety of species when I go to various other venues. I have had great tips for rigs, experience of handling quality fish which have improved my performance in the competitions which I fish annually through my work.
After the trips on this holiday I went back home 'charged-up' with enthusiasm for the sport. I fished on 28th August 2010 in the Police Sport (UK) National Boat Championships 2010 at Stromness, Orkney ( see the report on the Police Sport UK website ). I won both the individual Champion and Species Trophy (12 species) against more than 100 competitors. If my head was not big enough already I fished next day, 29th August 2010 in the Scottish Police Boat Championship also out of Stromness, I manged to bag both joint winner and species position along with Keith Wilkinson from Ross-shire. I could not believe my 'Donald-Duck' two coveted titles in two days. It was better than a grand slam. It is incredible that I gained my experience on Bessie Vee in the far south west of our British Isles only to travel to the north east extreme corner to hook-a-win. An awesome year for me, one I will never forget. I will be back on Bessie-Vee next year for more action and to hone my skills and get a good slagging off from the knowledgeable and great Cornish Skipper.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Bessie Vee

This last few days has been a bit of a struggle with so much wind on some very heavy tides, however Sunday the strong wind fell away for a couple of hours and Wham! fish applenty! just goes to prove that the big tides are not a p[roblem ,if the wind will co-operate. Start booking your winter up/down tiding pretty soon or the week end dates will all have gone.

Had a patchy spell last month - August is always a bit quiet. Still managed a nice lot of good bass and hounds.
Had a competition on a wet and windy Friday a couple of weeks ago we had a good mix of fish, bass, hounds, tope, whiting, dogs, pouting and an eel. The following day we struggled to get a bite.. thats fishing !
Plenty of school bass about .. with the odd bigger one if you persevere.
The hounds are disappearing now and the cod will start to show any time soon, the big bass should be about and with the large set of tides this weekend I am expecting a return of the rod benders.. -

Autumn has most certainly arrived with wind & rain along with reports of the first Cod and quality Whiting!
The water has been coloured by the wind so brought an abrupt end to the Mackerel fishing which is a pity as fresh, it is the best bait for the large Bass and Thornbacks that frequent our area!
Hermit crabs remain scarce which has been a problem all summer regards the Smoothound fishing that has not been good as would be expected!
The Cod should have arrived in numbers by late September, add them to the Bass that will stay around until November we should be in for some good fishing over the next couple of months! Lugworm & Squid cocktail will probably be the best bait for the Cod & Whiting while given some clear water Hokkies & pirks for the shoal Bass!
The coloured water will bring the Herrings inshore which will replace mackerel as the top Thornback bait!
The odd Tope should be caught with Spurdogs a possibility on the deepwater marks.
A Bass weighing 23lb 15oz was landed by a net boat from a local mark so shows that we do have some fantastic fish in our waters, what a catch that would have been on rod & line!
Some weekend dates available on Duke IV throughout the winter so feel free to enquire! -

FLAMING FLATTIES - Dave Metcalf,Roger Buttle,Steve Wells and Kevin all from Sussex enjoyed a days plaice fishing on Flamer III that will rank as one of their best ever. The signs were not good with a realy small tide and an easterly breeze blowing which normaly does not help the fishing. But fishing being fishing the rule a reason book went out the window and they had a brilliant day, this is what makes my job interesting and keeps a challange up for the anglers. As I always say every day is different in the fishing world.Lots of plaice were caught up to 7Ib including two six pounders and 5Ib plusssers along with 4 to 5 pounders.Steve Wells caught 12 including several personal bests and he put back the six pounder he caught.Roger Buttle also had a six pounder along with 4 to 5Ib fish. But the biggest was caught by Dave Metcalf a thumping 7Ib plaice which is Daves personal best.Dave is pictured with his big spotty.Kevin chipped in with some 3 to 4Ib plaice. The successful bait on the day was ragworm and Ammo black lug cocktail tipped with a squid strip.

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
On a recent shark fishing trip we were lucky enough to come across something rather unusual on the Shy-Torque. The day was uneventful regarding the sharks however during slack water my crewman John Wilcock decided to have a go at a little bottom fishing. After 5 minutes or so he hooked into what was going to give him one hell of a scrap for the next 20! With two "runs" on the bottom which peeled off line like a big game fish he eventually pursuaded it to leave the depths and started coaxing it toward the boat. On route the fish made 3 or 4 heavy dives and if it weren't for Johns 50+ years of sea angling experience ( not all with myself !! ) the fish would probably have smashed him to bits ! On seeing the fish approach the surface I decided that the landing net was not going to be sufficient and decided on the gaff. A good decision indeed as the fish nearly dragged me over the side !! John managed this fine fish to the boat using a Shakespeare 30lb class rod armed with 30lb Berkeley Whiplash braid, but just to make it really impressive he was using a 49p 3 x hook Fladen daylight trace bought from our local Boyes store! A credit to both Fladen and John. Well done mate.

Report on-board Excel 2
Tuesday and Wednesday this week we went a fair way south from our normal grounds for a little adventure.

The trips certainly paid off as we had great fishing with a good variety of fish hitting the decks of Excel 2. On both days when the tide was running at it's hardest we drifted for bass with good results. Great to have anglers setting new PB's . The fishing was really exciting as the bass hit the baits hard as we drifted through the White water of a tide rip on the edge of a bank.
As the tide slackened we did drifts further along the series of banks picking up plaice and gurnards to dragged lugworm baits. On both days we anchored for a while as the tide was gentle to try for a blonde ray or two, sadly we didn't see any on these trips , just a few of them pesky dogfish !
When the tide started to run hard again it was time to feather up a few mackeral to take home nice and fresh in the cool box, then off home after a great days fishing.
Dave.
