  • 01/08/2010 Fishing Report by Dave Hunkin on Bessie Vee (Mevagissey, Cornwall)

1 Aug 2010 by Dave Hunkin

    Report on-board Bessie Vee

    Sunday, 1st August.
As some of the inshore wrecks are being overly frequented, took 2 hours to steam 30 miles looking for ling for this group. Slack water was at mid-day, so we managed to have time at anchor despite the fairly big tide.

Anchoring for the last of the flood-tide, fishing was quiet with two or three small ling and a couple of conger (with quite heavy loss of tackle)!

Things improved greatly on the ebb, with 30 fish caught, the best of which were ling at 26 and 24lb. All congers were returned successfully. We finished off the day with a few handy pollock on the drift, having managed five hours of fishing on a nine hour day.

  • 12/07/2010 Fishing Report by Ray Martin on PLAN B (Southend-On-Sea, Essex)

12 Jul 2010 by Ray Martin

    Report on-board PLAN B

Just a quick update as I am always far too busy to get these done!
Fishing over past month has been superb. Most days we are getting 20-30 hounds mostly around the 5-8lb mark and bass of around 2-3lb.
The last two trips have produced larger bass (due to a change of tactics and trying various baits)... Bass like some wierd combinations!
I have tried to avoid catching Roker (thornback ray) but they still keep coming... They will take anything it seems, Rag and squid cocktail is their favourite at the moment (meant for bass) .. they all seem to be about the same size (about 7LB).
The weed seems to be thining out now, so we should be able to fish the closer marks, so fingers crossed the big bass should start to show from now on...

  • 31/07/2010 Fishing Report by Bob Marshall on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

31 Jul 2010 by Bob Marshall

    Report on-board Duke IV

Excellent fishing here at Ramsgate with good Thornback Ray and Smoothounds. The big Bass have started to show with a fine pair weighing 8lb 12oz to Sam aged 15 who was in line to win the pool for the biggest fish of the day, some suggested that £40 might not best be paid to such a young lad when Dad Nigel weighed in with a last minute Bass of 12lb 4oz. Nice job Nigel! Both fish caught on mackerel fillet on Ramsgate charterboat Duke IV. See more pics on www.fishingramsgate.com

  • 07/2010 Fishing Report by Pete Rose on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

    Jul 2010 by Pete Rose

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

    NEW RECORD FOR SEA URCHIN
This week I had a group of lads on from Helmsley mostly novices who were fishing a big tide of around 5.4m, still there was no wind and the water was clear as a bell, Robin Molesworth was fishing baited Muppet’s on my hire tackle when he hit into a huge fish on some ground close to Whitby.

We had been catching a steady run of mainly cod around 3/6lb and I decided to keep the same drift while fish were coming up. Drift after drift fish every time even by his own admitions Robin was a newbie only ever fished from a boat some 20 years previous.

When he hit the big one he had gained much from the codlings that were coming aboard so did not panic at all he just kept steady pressure on the fish as we all stood by in envy the rod bent almost in half.

I knew from my experience this was a real good fish after around 12Min’s I could see its length beneath the boat this is a big one I said still fifty feet down it looked huge, Finlay it broke the surface at the same moment my gaff hit it under the chin bingo, (believe me I have missed a few in my time but this was unmissable)

What a fish I knew as I lifted it over the hand rail it was the biggest ling I had seen for many years, at that moment another angler local lad (Mike Butler from the endeavour pub) shouted I have a big fish on get the gaff ready please skipper in all the excitement I had not realised he was still fishing another rod bending ling broke the surface only to meet the gaff again another cracker

so up to my electronic scales and we all hazard our own guess at the weights and the first ling weighed a whopping 29lb 10oz a new record for Robin and for the Sea Urchin. The second fish of Mikes was just on 20lb, after all the excitement we had drifted a good half mile off the mark what with the big tide and all so I headed back up the same drift while the lads were taking pictures.

I set the boat up again then one bloke at the back who spent all morning tangling the reel getting stuck and finding it hard to get to grips with the drift trebble hooks and the rough ground, hit another big fish at first I assumed he had the bottom again has he had during every other drift but no he was retrieving line and the rod was showing signs of a nice fish with deep bends as the fish nodded it’s head in an attempt to dive this time a cracking cod which weighed in at 14lb exactly.

What a brilliant day even without the three really big ones there was plenty of cod for everyone to take home, once again just shows small tides don’t mean big fish and you don’t need to be an expert to land a fish of a life time if you have decent tackle and a little guidance.

  • 28/07/2010 Fishing Report by paul sykes on Trojan Warrior (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

28 Jul 2010 by paul sykes

    Report on-board Trojan Warrior

Its been very noticable how many undersized codling and ling are about on the inshore grounds just of late.
We found this last year, and have benefited this season with some excellent fishing for the grown on big specimins , on occasion lifting memories of the good old days before the EU. f-----ck it up.
Theres plenty of summer left to enjoy a day at sea on the yorkshire coast aboard "WARRIOR", sailing out of Whitby. and the migrating whales arrive on our coast as an extra fishing experience any time soon.

  • 26/07/2010 Fishing Report by David Hancock on Excel 2 (Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire)

26 Jul 2010 by David Hancock

    Report on-board Excel 2

Another double figure bass hit the deck of Excel 2 today.
Well done Joe Fidock on capturing a superbly conditioned 11 3/4 lb fish.
Bait was a halved mackeral fillet fished hard on the bottom.

Inshore fishing continues to go from strength to strength at Ramsgate, ignore the miseries that say there`s no fish. We know better and can find them !
The next couple of months will be belters, i promise . . .

    Dave.
