Fishing Report by Drew Brooke-Mellor

First Class Boat. First Class Skipper. First Class Fishing. First Class Day Out!
View Boats Page
Last Friday (July 23rd) was our first outing with Kurt, his deck-hand Charlie and
the Yellow Fin Boat. We were a party of five, including my Brother-in-Law from
Canada, who is a lake fisherman, and Chris, our next-door neighbour who has never
slung a hook in his life. If you book this boat (and you'd be a fool not to) take
time to arrive for bacon butties (or more) at the cafe and a visit to the 'Newhaven
Angler' for your bait and lures, where you get a great reception from both shops.
Other supplies are availbale from the convenience store on the same parade. It
really is a 'one-stop shop' for everything you need for a great day out.
Leaving shortly before 8, we had caught our fresh mackerel bait by 9:30 and were on
the way to our first mark. It wasn't long until, thanks to Kurt's expert knowledge
of the area, before we were 'in the fish'. One of the other Lad's, Tim, caught an
amazing 60lb, 7ft long Conger Eel which had us all leaping around the boat once it
was landed and photographed before release to breed another day. It wasn't long
before Rob, from our party, caught a very handsome 35lb Conger and Chris, our
newbie, opened his own sea-fishing account with a respectable Pollack of around 7lb.
I was thrilled to bits to hook my own personal Pollock of around 10lb.
Including a handful of very meaty Bream, our total catch gave us over 50lb of
table-ready fish after gutting and a very enjoyable BBQ was had by all and the WAGS
of the Hunter Gatherers. The party went on long into the small hours and most of the
talk was about booking the Yellow Fin for our next trip.
Don't bother looking for another boat if you're fishing off Newhaven. Kurt Lander
and the Yellow Fin is Numero Uno. It's the tops. End Of.

26 miles from Mevagissey harbour today, to treat the boys to some deep water pollack. Caught a few ling and two conger on the slack water, with no success drifting, so we moved to another wreck where the pollack and cod were feeding.

Andy Woodford, the best of the eight anglers fishing, managed to land twelve pollack and a cod, and also the best pollack of the day, an 18lb - er. Everyone caught pollack, between 6 and 14lb, and half a dozen small cod, the best of which was 11lb.
All in all, a successful day, and well worth going a few extra miles!UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Bessie Vee

Took nine anglers 20 miles out into the Channel for a day trip looking for pollock and cod today. Good numbers of pollock, though no great size - the best reaching 10 - 12lb. Better cod catches, and surprised by a blue shark which took the bait on the way down. After two laps of the boat, we managed to get it alongside just long enough to see it before it parted the angling trace!
All the boats sharking today managed to catch, top boat being the Swallow from Looe, with four, two of which reached 100lb!
We saw a blue yesterday on the surface, so it seems like they have arrived for summer.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Bessie Vee

Arrived to anchor up for slack at 3 with the sun shineing bright, all rigs whent down including flowing traces for tope and huss aswell as feathers to try find some of the big whitting that lurk in deeper water too my home made spurdog rig and within 5 minutes of the baits hitting the bites started and with all the feathers destroyed by fish within seconds and everyone on the flowing traces and spurdog rigs hauling fish in it was obvious what rigs were needed.
The action did not stop for one minute even finding the fish nearly a hundred feet up from the bottom but just over 2 hours later the tide was nearly unfishable and being time to be heading in we called lines up and had a quick talk to calculate the amount of fish we had, which were - nealry 80 spurdogs, 25 huss and 6 tope including some lovely whitting and amazing lee enough not a single dogfish the days we always with for haha !!!! -
