    Report on-board Mistress

There's a saying in fishing, "You never get two days the same" and how true it is! On Saturday's trip, the skipper Tony, informed us that the had caught a fair number of fish, mostly Cod and Ling. Today however the fish were not playing ball. We left Royal Quays, early morning, in a blanket of fog that was present for most of the day. We headed for a couple of offshore wrecks and after a few drifts picked up some mackerel for bait. We had a go for a few cod on the same wreck and picked up the odd one. This was the story all day. The lads aboard picked away all day, landing the odd cod here and there. There seemed to been quite a few pouting around and a few good size one were landed and returned. Matt, up on a trip from Peterborough, landed a decent haddock, around the 2lb mark, the best I've seen for a while. Most fish were taken on baited muppets and hokkais, prawn and squid working better than mackerel. Shads didn't work at all. Thanks to Tony, who wasn't feeling too good, for persisting and trying lots of different marks to pick up some fish. Michael, (pictured) managed to catch a decent Pollock, around 7lb mark, and the best of the bigger cod. Well done Michael. The picture was taken during the only 20 minutes the fog lifted.

14 Aug 2022 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

The only place I would consider working (if we get the weather) is the “Wall” on enormous Springs like yesterday.

Vic Bruce and 5 of his mates chartered the boat yesterday and decided that was the place to go and try.

Another perfect flat calm day aided our run out there but sadly the fish weren’t really playing for us.
They were definitely there though as we lost loads more than we boated, but with the drift speed approaching 2 knots they were struggling to catch our baits/lures.

The lads knew it would be a challenge when they booked it but still enjoyed their day with around 20 keepers to take back to Malton.

Cheers lads and see you in October.

  • 12/08/2022 Fishing Report by Simon Logan on Deep Blue (Eastbourne, East Sussex)

12 Aug 2022 by Simon Logan

    Report on-board Deep Blue

Today was a day of exceeding expectations ✅

Given the forecast (fishable but choppy start and finish predicted), the current water clarity and the fact that my whole boat group hire wanted to predominately lure fish today, I had a bit of a job on my hands to find the fish. All hiring my Penn rods and reels, and using our Sidewinder lures.

After heading straight out wide to some of the easterly wrecks, I quickly decided (3 wrecks prospected) that we were probably better off heading back inshore a little and working the reefs and rock marks…..

I love it when a plan comes together.

First drift was a reccy. Second drift started and we were soon into a schoolie bass, a little pollack and a codling at the same time. The UK’s holy trinity of fish all on deck in tandem, but all being returned to grow into more worthy foes.

Next drift, a bit of a better bend in the rod, some head shakes, and a bit of line being taken back. A nice pollack of 5lb popped up out of the dark water.

Third drift, a couple of nice codling made an appearance. One slightly bigger than the other, ranging between 4 - 6 lbs.

Last drift, there’s always one more drift, another big bend in the rod. My angler said it felt quite heavy. I watched as a couple of head shakes rattled the tip of the rod, then nothing, just a dead weight. It looked heavy. When the fish made the surface I knew if was the biggest codling of the season. It actually looked like it may even be a double figure COD!!

Sadly, it was JUST under the magic mark making it still only a mere codling, but what a lovely codling it was. It was measured at 74cm’s - you can use this conversion calculator to see what a fish like this would weigh http://www.anglingaddicts.co.uk/fish-length-to-weight/

This Codling is Deep Blue Charters biggest this year.

Slack water arrived, and the fishing stopped dead. We anchored for the start of the ebb in a mark that produces bream-a-plenty, conger and the odd surprise.

Bream started biting immediately, and a little smooth hound joined in the fun taking a tiny piece of squid on a size 2 Cox & Rawle specimen x hook.

Everyone caught, and everyone took some beautiful fish home for dinner.

Well done to James for playing it cool and landing the biggest fish of the day, and a big well done to David who organised the trip. All of his clients and friends tolerated a bit of a choppy morning to be rewarded with some very nice fish indeed.

  • 12/08/2022 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

12 Aug 2022 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

The fantastic weather continues and today we had a great group of lads on board.

They all understood that we had a big tide to contend with, and all came equipped for the job, which really helped with the fishing. We pinched a few quick Mackerel at the Bell Buoy to get us going, as the first slack water was approaching. We took only a few small Codling off the first wreck, so I moved us on quickly to a much bigger wreck as the tide eased.

This turned out well, with three or four fish a drift through slack. As the tide began to gain pace on the Ebb, we had a look tight inside on some rough ground, but that was unproductive. That left us with the option of moving out to try some more rough ground, until the second slack water. With a drift speed averaging 1.8 - 2.2 knots the fishing was hard. We tried the 3, 5 and 7 mile ground but just picked up odd small fish here and there.

We moved back inside to a couple of wrecks as the Ebb tide began to ease. The first one was a bit “chewy” and we also got plagued by Pouting, so went to another wreck for actual “slack”water. We fared much better here, with 3-4 fish a drift again. Today we caught mainly Codling up to 8lb with a few small Ling to 6lb. Standard tactics of bait traces with Squid and Mackerel did all the better fish.

Top Tip….If you are planning on a future trip in a big tide. Leave the Hokkai’s and multi-hook rigs at home and the light leads. They create so many tangles and lose everyone valuable fishing time.

Thanks again to everyone for coming along today. I really enjoyed it, you were all great company.

  • 12/08/2022 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

12 Aug 2022 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

With the tides on the make towards the huge Springs again, the fishing has certainly taken a knock these last two days.
A fresh South Easterly hampered our efforts on Wednesday and we actually cut the trip down a bit because conditions were so poor!
Yesterday however was the polar opposite, with the sea like a millpond again! Same forecast for both days yet completely different conditions.
Anyway, we did manage a “few” fish each day, with a couple of half decent fish boated over the slack water periods.
Andy Hoick from Hornsea taking a nice Cod yesterday at 9lb and our Charlie landing one 8lb 8oz too.
A couple of days off after tomorrow’s trip to wait for these Springs to ease back.
    Cheers and enjoy your weekend!
