So, the 1st July was the big day that everybody was waiting for it seems. It meant it was now legal for our anglers to keep one bass per person. And we were itching for the weather to be good enough so we could at least get out there and try and get ourselves those silver bars.
We didn’t have to wait long, as the weather soon gave us a chance on the 6th to head straight out there. There were only 4 of us on board fishing, but this was great. Once we had left the harbour, we decided as it was so flat, we were going to go wrecking first instead. What a great idea that was, so we all tackled up ready to see if we could catch any pollack.
Arriving at the wreck, it was clear to see that there were fish all over it on the sounder. We all got excited and lined ourselves up for the first drift. The first drift produced a pollack of around 16lb. What a lovely fish. The next few drifts were just as good with the average stamp of pollack being around 13lb mark.
It was then time to look for those Billys, and we didn’t fail there either, the best bass of the day was 12lb 7oz when weighed on board, (unfortunately it had lost weight throughout the day, and weighed 11lb 4oz once back on shore). There must have been at least 20 bass landed between the four of us and even though we could have kept 1 fish each we decided to return all but one. Once the tide wasn’t in the favour of the bass, we then went back to looking for some more pollack.
After a few more drifts and more pollack, it was time to head back to the marina, clean down and put the boat to bed. Kelley’s Hero ended up with around about 50 pollack and 20 bass , and what a lovely stamp of fish they were, all in great condition and fighting fit. We can’t wait to head back out and get some more.

Well I must admit I have been a bit rubbish with keeping the reports up to date this year. The weather was patchy in April with no decent runs of days at sea. When we did get out the Pollack fishing was steady with some nice fish coming to a variety of lures. Towards the end of April saw a really good run of Turbot on the shambles. Some of the best numbers I have ever seen. 20 fish in a day was not uncommon. Most fish were small and were returned but a couple of decent fish each day combined with loads of bites was enough to keep the customers interested.
As soon as May came the onslaught of days began, this year the majority of the time the weather was kind meaning we managed to complete all of our Channel Islands trips which displayed some of the best flatty fishing I have ever seen along with other trips over showing the worst. Thats just fishing I Suppose. Inshore in Weymouth the Shambles continued to fish well and as you would have guessed as we weren't allowed to retain them a glut of Bass turned up on the scene, everywhere we went Bass, Bass, Bass!! we had a couple of lovely days returning all the Bass we hooked, but this isn't for everyone. Last May and June saw the best Cod fishing the south coast has ever seen. This year it hasn't been quite so good but with some much better quality fish around keeping the anglers on their toes when they hook that decent fish close to the wreck. The fewer numbers of Cod have meant the Pollack have had a chance this summer. Some beautiful summer specimens have come up in the high doubles. If these fish had been landed in the winter then they would be well over 20lb. This bodes well for a good winter season on the Pollack Hopefully.
At the time of writing we have had 5 windy days which has been the longest break since mid April. Inshore in the last week the Mackerel have finally arrived in good numbers long may they stay!!! Tope and Bream are coming in higher numbers and we are now allowed to keep a Bass for tea!!!!

Pictured is Mervyn Bishop from Cheltenham with an 18lb Turbot that was returned alive. This is one of 6 double figure Turbot that have been boated and released alive on channel islands trips this year. Hats off to you Merv and the other lads.

Greetings Fellow anglers. Boat trip out of Amlwch on Kerry Kim with captain pat saturday 9th July.
Sailed at 10 back in for 6 Bit windy but we managed to do the reefs it was a good day fish caught pollack, wrasse,codling,poor cod,gurnard,huss etc and the cutomary amlwch trout ie dawgfish.We all had a great day as always with pat the crack was good plenty of tea, food was good. Looking foward to our next trip with the yorkshire boys on kerry kim. thanks pat View Boats Page

Size Matters will arrive at Liverpool marina on October 20th ready for the winter cod season on the river Mersey. Charter's will start on October 22nd and will finish on March 7th. Size Matters will then sail back to Plymouth for the summer season. Please be aware we can only fish neap tides in the Mersey so dates are limited to when you can fish. If you want weekend dates you need to book ASAP, there are only a few weekend dates available. If you have never fished onboard Size Matters you will be amazed at the massive deck space available, perfect to fish from in comfort. The wheel house is fully heated and seats up to 10 people, Ideal to get out of the weather on a cold wet winter day. If you would like information about available date's and fishing the Mersey just give me a call or text.

Hi quite a windy weekend nevertheless quite a few fish around inshore .mackerel showing quite well now especially on anchor . Today had 20 plus bull Huss to 12lbs pollack on reefs al though not as large as ones I,ve been catching on offshore wrecks along wih the cod. Remember offshore wreck fishing with me 10 hours midweek from £300. Large 40 foot aqua star loads of room very safe comfortable boat. Tea coffee hot snacks all included. Good fishing Roy

Its been a while since my last report on here so I thought I’d best do a quick update on what’s been happening at mersea. In my last write up I reported the arrival of the first decent smooth-hounds this season and I’m pleased to say they are still showing. Over the past couple of moths we have seen some great fish and decent numbers at times too. We have been lucky enough to catch them in the really shallow water on several occasions too. This in my opinion is some of the best sport fishing to be had in the country when it goes right. Most of the time we can fish light and they scrap hard with nowhere to go but out, towards or just do a lap of the boat! So far this year our biggest is over 18lbs and was unlucky enough to fall to me. Hopefully we can find one a little bigger before the season finishes as there’s plenty of time yet. Besides smooth-hounds we have had a few roker mixed in. these are generally smaller than the spring run although there are still some decent fish in places. There have been a few mackerel in places but they are hit and miss even if conditions are right for them. We have found one or two bass although they were all released before the 1st of july they were still nice to catch. Over the next few weeks we should see the sport for smooth-hounds continue with thorn-backs amongst other species such as bass making up our general trips. I have a few dates available for offshore bass trips before the end of September but it is one bass per anglers for the pot. You can however release as many as you can catch.

What a contrasting week of anglers ranging from Foriegn Student adventure holidays, Family fun days to high quality local club anglers, the fishing has mostly been local and has thrown up some great catches of Ray's, Plaice , Bream and Gurnards. Best Undulate 16lb went to Ann Chown who had never caught a Ray before but is now a seasoned Ray angler who also landed several more Small Eyeds today. Due to high winds for the last few days we have had to seek shelter in the Harbour for part of the day and several good Plaice up to 3lb and a few big Gurnards have been landed along with those pesky little bait robbing Bream.

Blowing hard this weekend so we couldn't do the wrecks for the big pollock and cod we are known for. The two parties we had were happy to fish the inshore grounds and we had tope to 30lb and huss to16lb. The reefs fished well and we had pollock to 61/2 lb and loads of wrasse and a fair few mackerel. These are still a bit scarce but are putting in a bit better appearance now. There were also loads of whiting and dogs and a few gurnard. As usual we had plenty of tea and coffee and a good few sausage and burgers! All in all, considering the strong south westerly winds we did very well. Amlwch is an ideal place to fish in the SW winds because of the high cliffs which give shelter. If you get blown off any time please give me a ring , we may be able to help.
