    Report on-board Spot On!

Shark fishing has been very good this year on board Spot On from Brixham with just 3 trips completed we have had over 30 sharks boated, the best day was manic with 5 sharks all being hooked and played at the same time and with 2 lost in the battle of lines going all ways we did manage to keep 2 beauties both being measured for length and girth in turn making them 125lb and 132lb.

This was a truly remarkable trip as it was busy all day with many sharks in the area.

The next best sharking day saw 12 blues landed.

Spot On has one more shark trip planned for this year as I only do a few trips a year sharking and this is on the 28th September 2015 with 1space remaining. (max 6 anglers on the boat).

Spot On is still the only boat to catch Blue sharks and Porbeagle sharks from Brixham.

Diary for 2016 is looking very busy so get in quick to have a trip on board Brixham's only catamaran offering you speed, stability, comfort and plenty of room.

Spot On is sponsored by lure giant SIDEWINDER and TOP RIGS meaning you can fish with the best end tackle available on the market today. (Please contact me to pre order and collect on board).

Pictured is the best Blue shark to date on board Spot On 132lb!

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

It's been a fairly quiet month for us down in Poole with a whole week of hard easterly winds followed by the same again of south westerly. Some of the most enjoyable fishing lately has been along the sea front from Poole to Hengistbury head using the light tackle. We have had a few days turn up over 20 different species. Something I haven't seen much of as a skipper is trigger fish and they been making an appearance taking the plaice baits on the sand. Almost tropical to look at they also fight like a bream on steroids. Out further off there is still plenty of tope and rays at anchor with all 5 species of rays making regular appearances. We are still picking off the bass with live baits such as scad and mackerel although I think they will start to thin out soon and we shall have to move onto pout. Only two more trips over to Alderney to go and it will be the winter season, although if you look outside today you would think it had arrived already.

  • 09/09/2015 Fishing Report by Ray Martin on PLAN B (Southend-On-Sea, Essex)

9 Sep 2015 by Ray Martin

    Report on-board PLAN B

Looks like the drop in temperature has started bringing in the winter species.
Loads of whiting are stripping fish baits meant for skate and huge numbers of dogfish have moved up river.
The better set of tides this weekend should give us a chance to look farther afield , fingers crossed the weather is kind.

  • 09/2015 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie on Size Matters (Craobh Haven, Argyll & Bute)

    Sep 2015 by Kevin McKie

    Report on-board Size Matters

Managed to get out Sunday and Monday, the plan both days was to fish for tope for the last time this year.
On Sunday I headed to a tope mark that has produced well for me this year, but the fishing was poor not one tope run and only a few bullhuss to 10lb, dogfish, tub gurnard, mackerel and whiting to show for our efforts.
On Monday I decided to go well off shore to some deep water, where I thought the tope mite be as they migrate for winter.
First drop a small tope 24lb and then the rays moved in lots of them up to 11lb 8oz followed by some nice bullhuss to 12lb. There was plenty of mackerel off shore as well, this is why the fishing was much better than the day before. The summer is coming to an end now, I have one last set of neap tides to fish off shore then I will start to fish the Mersey in October for the winter cod and rays.
Here are my last available dates to fish off shore for this year.

    Tuesday September 22nd 5 places
    available. Conger/wrecking fishing.

Wednesday September 23rd 1 place available. Wrecking.

    Thursday September 24th 2 places available. Conger/wrecking.

    Friday September 25th 2 places available. Conger/wrecking.

If you would like to book any of these dates please get in touch.

    Cheers

  • 13/09/2015 Fishing Report by jon old on High Flyer 2 (Great Yarmouth, Norfolk)

13 Sep 2015 by jon old

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

Just to bring us up to date have had a rough deal lately with the weather strong south easts cancelled few trips no choice, all fishing has been inshore apart from one day when we managed to bash a few mackerel on the banks. At the moment plenty of whiting stripping our baits the bigger ones as keepers normally turn up end of this month as nights draw in. The spotty dogs still about all sizes even 6 inch specimens being hooked unbelievable! The smoothounds slowing up compared to last month but thats expected as the water temperature slowly drops still few being caught as you can see on catch photos. Having a little run of skate at the mo about time they showed up been bit slow for us this year as they seemed to hang about further south this year very welcome addition to this month. Started catching few early codling all in prime condition not really expecting any numbers till the first frosts usually but such a topsy turvey season this year anything could happen. Losing clarity now offshore ,winter round the corner soon be icey decks and smell of hot soup onboard and cod being the main quarry and people moaning about whiting and talk of christmas! Taking bookings for our cod season so as weekends go first please think ahead as every year i have dissapointed customers who cant get out as they ring week before they want to go and obviously were full. So looking forward to our winter season as had brilliant codling catches last year best for a long while hopefully those returned fish put on few more pounds heading straight for Corton as we speak! Thank you to all who have come out on High Flyer just lately especially with the way the weather has been its very much appreciated. Until next trip tight lines everyone.

  • 08/2015 Fishing Report by Gethyn Owen on My Way 2 (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

    Aug 2015 by Gethyn Owen

    Report on-board My Way 2

August was another month of mixed fortunes aboard My Way, maybe ‘Mixed Fortunes’ will be the title of our 2015 review, temperamental weather once again playing a big part in the whole month. Still, with a fully booked boat, when the weather allowed we managed to sail whenever possible and locate some sport for our crews.

A few days into the month and the weather settled nicely for us to take a trip out to Holyhead Deep, sights set firmly on spurdogs and maybe a few tope. We were’t disappointed with a good number of spurs and tope coming to the boat, however the vast majority on the small side with the bulk of the double figure fish coming from the big huss that frequent certain areas of the Deep.

This day in the Deep was followed by a few days inshore. Strong winds canceling any thoughts off offshore spurs and tope. We settled for inshore species hunting, with plenty of small pollack and varies types of wrasse being caught whilst drifting around the breakwater and Rocky Coast areas of our bay.

At anchor, plenty of species including some nice fat summer whiting, for late summer and well in to autumn, tope move inshore and gorge themselves on the whiting. So it is always chancing a big bait in Holyhead Bay.

My Way regular Mark Dolben was on the case, having landed his first tope with us a couple years ago from this same spot, he was only too keen to get a bait in the water. After rustling up a few whiting for bait, Mark was soon over the side with a ledgered whiting on 150b mono.

Aug 10th was a gloomy forecast, high winds and miserable rain to start the day, followed by bright sunshine and slightly calmer seas. All the crew were regulars and we chatted through the options, fish under the rocks or knock it on the head. The former was chosen, after all we had pollack, wrasse, coalies, coddling and more to entertain us on the drift and various others at anchor.

The forecast started to improve towards the end of the neap tides and we were going to grab a couple more days exploring Holyhead Deep. Inshore the fishing was enjoyable yet again, with plenty of wrasse and small pollack keeping us busy.

Species hunting has become very popular over recent years with various clubs or web based forums & Facebook Groups running competitions for anglers to see who can catch the most species. We enjoy species hunting too, changing rigs, baits, tactics to locate various types of fish, it helps hone your skills in to becoming a better angler. Learning more on fish habitats and feeding patterns can help us all catch more, it's not simply about dangling a bait over the side of a boat or off the rocks.
However it can also be frustrating, as Pete found out on one particular day. Needing a spotted ray, he watched a good few being caught around him, along with thornbacks however despite all the right rigs and bait, the spotted were avoiding him … we didn’t laugh!

In the deeps the fishing didn't disappoint, spurdogs, tope and big huss. Dave, above, was rewarded in the Deeps for his perseverance with a big bait when this lovely tope took him on a 30minute battle in 200ft of water.

On our way out to anchor in Holyhead Deep we occasionally stop over a couple wrecks air rock marks in search of pollack, we managed to catch a good few in a few drifts one day, with Warren taking a fair few home to satisfy the fish lovers during the next days summertime BBQ

As the tides started to climb or the weather restricted pay, it was inshore fishing again and fortunately a good mixed bag of species landed by the majority of anglers.

Already reported in our Pure Fishing Blog, Dave Craddock took part in the smoothhound challenge last May , landing a cracking hound of 23b, winning himself a Shakespeare Agility 12lb rod and Penn Squall 15 reel.
That rod and reel had their first outing, the first thing landed on his challenge prize … a belting inshore tope of 38lb!

A few more inshore days followed then towards the end of the month we managed to steal another day out in the Deep, thanks to the weather settling down for 24hrs. 6 of the 8 on board had never caught a tope before and had all requested just one thing from the trip! No pressure then!

Fortunately, the weather and tope gods looked kindly on us that day, with some excellent inshore fishing for a variety of species, including fresh pollack and mackerel of bait, followed by a venture out to the deeps for tope action.

5 from the 6, managed to bag a tope. Nothing too big, but plenty big enough to put a bend in the rod and give the anglers a superb first fight in 175ft of Holyhead Deep sea. Sadly some really big tope were also lost on that day, a couple screaming line form the reels only to bite clean through 150 and 200b monos.
