    Report on-board Sweet William

Massive thanks to Nick from the Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority for organising a run out yesterday with family and friends. We made the most of a short weather window, and found Ewan (who was on vacation from the USA) and Dom a lovely stamp of mackerel for the BBQ that evening. We had literally one drop on a wreck with baited hooks, and Susie wasted no time in finding a fantastic Cod before the cruise home!

We had a wet and wild run out yesterday for Tog and the Barnsley lads from the Keel Inn angling club. Thankfully the choppy seas eased off into the afternoon, but the rain stayed relentless for the majority of the day. Some great stamp of Codling, Ling and Pollack, and plenty of mackerel pretty much all day, making an appearance despite the testing conditions.

A chilly, choppy and windy morning whilst finding some mackerel, turned into a sunny, flat calm afternoon. Great craic with the lads, with some lovely Codling, Ling, Whiting, Haddock, Pouting, Pollack and plenty of Mackerel. Young Tyler taking top rod for the number of fish caught, and Andy finding a fantastic Cod just shy of 15lb.

  • 11/08/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

11 Aug 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Yesterday’s group were a mixed lot of regulars and newcomers to us.

Condition wise, the sea state was great compared to the day previous making the fishing much easier.

The Mackerel were abundant again although the stamp was a few sizes down on Wednesday’s catch. Plenty again in just the one drift.

With nearly all our fish coming off the ground on Wednesday, we chose to do the same run as then. A different day altogether with a mere 15 or so Codling coming aboard in the first couple of hours.

We had a chat and young crew man Fergus and the lads agreed we should have a run off to a couple of wrecks. No the best move ever but we did find a few.
For some reason I thought that the grounds back inside would fish on the change of tide onto the ebb and it did.

We finished the day off nicely there and some nice plump Codling were boated.

Tally for the day, 50-60 keepers with the usual juveniles to throw back.

Regular angler with us Paul Mawson landing the heaviest of the day with a nice Ling of 12lb 02oz. His fish taking the lead in the Shy-Torque III fish of the month competition where the heaviest of the month wins a fee trip. Good luck to him.

    Cheers for now,
    Rich

  • 10/08/2023 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

10 Aug 2023 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

First day back out today after a 10 day lay off for Big Spring Tides and poor weather.

We headed out this morning with a mixed group of lads, with the intention of fishing a few wrecks, as it was a 4.7m tide. After a bouncy exit through the pier ends on the Northerly swell, we set about catching some Mackerel for bait. First stop at 3 miles gave us loads for the day, which was good.

With a hour to go of the Ebb we dropped onto a couple of the inshore wrecks. Most of the lads went in with muppet bait traces with Squid or Mackerel. We had a few fish, usually 1 or 2 a drift with David Kwapisz taking a nice early Codling of 5lb. We kept on the move for the remainder of the day, looking for a wreck that would give us a decent return. Unfortunately, we just kept picking up a handful of fish off the ones we tried.

Once the Flood tide had run through, the drift speed increased dramatically and we ran onto some rough ground to end the day. It wasn’t sensational, but Jamie Britton and Don Wang both picked up a 7lb Cod and Ling apiece, within seconds of each other.

Mackerel was the dominant bait today, but I found the lack of consistency frustrating. Everyone kept on trying all day and caught a few, but it certainly wasn’t sensational. Thanks to everyone who came for the day out, you were all excellent company.

  • 10/08/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

10 Aug 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

After due deliberation, we decided to give it a go yesterday.

There was a NW swell running which made the run out a very steady one.

First stop was the 3 mile area to see if the Mackerel were still running after a week off for the big Spring tides and they were there all right. Strings of them and enough in one drift to give us the fresh bait for the day!

Our next move was to some ground on the 5 mile and we picked a few Codling up there. Baited rigs better than the artificial lures there for sure.

Our next stop was a short strip of ground on the 7 mile where we picked away on the Codling for a few hours. The fish falling to the Shads there too, indicating the water was a lot clearer a few more miles out.
    Good sport.

There were a couple of green bellies on board today, but as I always do, if some are feeling queasy and fall to the old “mal de mer” I always give them some fish which my crewman Fergus and I catch.

Tally for the day, around 35 keepers, which, in challenging conditions at times was a fair result.

Mark Konowski taking the best bag. 8 nice fish home with him.

    Cheers lads,
    Rich

  • 07/08/2023 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

7 Aug 2023 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

With our main tope season now behind us I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at this years efforts. as ever there was no shortage of effort from the lads and we managed to get out and fish for them on just about every suitable tide. the weather tried its best to curtail our efforts but with the right people on board, fishing the right area and luck on our side we managed to get all of our trips in. of course having a big catamaran like Galloper helps with this too and she certainly earned her keep again this year.
As always with this kind of fishing it can bit hit and miss. After all we are targeting one specific species which just so happens to be an apex predator therefore is less numerous than other species lower down the food chain. That said we had tope on all but one trip and when we didn’t have tope we managed other quality fish such as decent bass, hounds or other species.
The Thames estuary is renowned for big tope and although we may not see record breakers each year the average stamp is still good. Most trips we saw fish between 35-45lb with several below this and one or two above this size. The biggest of the year fell to Martin at 47lbs and our best day I my opinion was 6 tope between 35-45lb and several more lost or missed. The most we had was over 20 just 2 days later but not a ‘decent’ fish came to the boat.
From any reports I have seen it looks like once again very few boats even bothered for tope locally. To be honest I only see the occasional private boat or very occasional charter boat targeting them around here now. one or two are caught as bycatch while fishing for other species but seemingly little interest or effort goes in. presumably that would put us as the tope tope boat locally but unfortunately by default rather than competition. This is not just lack of interest from skippers but more often lack of interest from anglers. so as ever I am grateful to the lads who invest their time and money with me. I am particular about how I like to target these fish and tend to vet the anglers that come toping with me. As I mentioned earlier these fish can be hit and miss so I was to stack the odds in our favour. With the lads that do join me I have faith that we will make the most of any chances that come our way. If you would like to join us tope fishing next year please get in touch and get a few trips in for other species first. There’s nothing worse than seeing an angler who’s not been out for a year loose the best fish of the day because he’s a bit rusty! These fish will find any weak point in you or your tackle but once hooked they are never forgotten.
Special mentions to some of my regular tope anglers like both Barry’s, Wayne and Ian Hewett for your continued efforts. great to see you get some decent fish again this year though some were harder earned than others. Also to some of the newer additions to tope angling who caught their first big fish like Kevin and Martin. Once again thanks to all of you for your efforts and giving me an excuse to go hunting big fish.
With our tope season finished most of our offshore trips from now to the end of November will be targeting bass in various places using various methods depending on conditions. From shallow water with worm and surface lures to deep water using lives and lures. Its nearly all light tackle and some of the best bass fishing you will find anywhere. this is better suited to beginners than my other offshore trips so you can hire tackle too. Please get in touch to be added to my mailing list or arrange individual or boat bookings.
Our general trips are still fishing well too despite the unsettled weather. I will post a report on our latest catches soon.
I have individual spaces and possibility of full boat bookings over the coming weeks and months if you want to get out.
Remember it is often worth giving me a shout if you are cancelled else where and still wish to get out, as we have lots of sheltered fishing available and a big catamaran which makes it even more comfortable.
