Report on-board Galloper
This week I thought I would take a look back at last years tope fishing and remind you that we have spaces over the next 6-8 weeks tope fishing offshore aboard the Galloper. I wont take beginners off there so you will need to be experienced with your own tackle for these trips. I have plenty of availability on general trips for everybody else.

We managed a good few tope trips in 2022, many Pb’s were broken and as usual several good fish lost too. After a few smaller fish the first decent tope of the year was a nice male of 43lb. our next trip was a few weeks later but the fish were still there and Mick had the biggest of the day at 43lbs. the bigger fish proved elusive for a couple of trips but by the time Tonys group joined us they were feeding well. Kevin had two over 40lb before 10am(44lbs and 43lbs). Graham had the next big girl weighing in at 44lbs followed by Tony with a fish of 35lb and several smaller pack tope mixed in.
The following trip was the busiest of the year with a total of 14 for the day. this consisted of several pack fish some in the 7-12lb range. A few between 20-35lb and a brace of 41lb fish for Barry and Charlie. Rolf topped the day off with a cracking fish just shy of 50lb (I gave him 49.8lb). caught on his spare rod (a tubertini continental match rod) which he was using while he re-tackled his uptider. We wont forget that one in a hurry! Interestingly Rolf had been out with me just two days before fishing the same area when we had struggled to find any decent fish. I always appreciate being given a second chance and what a pay off for him!
As ever Ian Hewett put in some serious time and effort with us. not least when he hired the boat to himself for a days tope fishing. it wasn’t thick and fast but after Ian had checked his knots by dragging in a heavy bundle of tangled rope, wire and weed we were confident his gear could stand up to the fish. we did find a few fish in the afternoon and Ian boated 4 tope and lost one. A brace of 30’s and a brace of 40’s which I think we were both pleased with.
Please get on touch with me for full boat bookings or individual spaces. I can also add you to my messaging list when I am trying to put offshore trips together. Please note that Galloper is a big, fast catamaran with a genuine 60mile code of practice. Not something many local boats can boast these days. All of this helps with our offshore trips and very few local boats can boast a a success rate like ours either.
The hounds will be inshore in numbers until September and we should see plenty more good days and decent fish between now and then.
I have plenty of spaces on general trips for full boat bookings and individuals. I also have spaces for tope, plaice and bass coming up soon so please get in touch.
Remember it is often worth giving me a shout if you are cancelled else where and still wish to get out, as we have lots of sheltered fishing available and a big catamaran which makes it even more comfortable.

Another beautiful day for us yesterday with our mixed group of lads.
We chose to get away from the faster running tide and headed offshore again to give the lads a better chance of catching.
Like the day before, the catch rate wasn’t anything special but everyone caught.
Glenn Stocks and Nick managed 16 fish between them.
One of my old motorcycling mates Graham Soloman managed 8 for himself too, with Cod to a shade over 7lbs. A deceptively stocky Codling!
All in all it was a good outing and the banter was even better!
Tally for the day 40 odd fish to keep with lots returns too.
Cheers
Rich

Massive thanks to the guys for the run out yesterday; they stuck with us through both the good and the tough days, and were rewarded with flat seas, sunshine and some cracking fishing!
View Boats Page
They say the apple never falls from the tree, and after Daz caught an almost double figure cod recently, he brought his son Hugo to what all the fuss was about. Hugo didn't waste any time to secure his position in the pecking order, and top rod for the day, by knocked into a lovely Ling of just shy of 12lb! It looks like Daz has some catching up to do :-) Between them both they had almost 20lb of fillets for the pan!
Warren and his brother were literally non stop once we hit the wrecks, and between them, after a 1 hour two man filleting session on the run home, had almost 30lb of fillets for the pan.
Mark was finding fantastic codling and Ling all day, and might also need a bigger freezer!
Shaun was given the name the ‘silent assassin’, as he didn’t have much time to chat between hauling them in pretty much non-stop on the shads!
Of course the First Mate didn’t feel like missing out on the party, and put his new rod gifted by Kingie, and new reel from Billy’s Fishing Tackle to work; safe to say it definitely works and that low speed setting came into its own. I’ve got some filleting to do myself later!
The saying goes that no two days are the same; we had tough day last Wednesday with only one decent codling boated and buckets of pollock, it was steady but challenging on Saturday with a mixed bag, and then yesterday produced very few pollack and hundreds of codling. Warren went around weighing a substantial proportion of the fish out of interest, and the average stamp was approximately 4.5lb.
Once again thanks to the lads for great craic yesterday! -

The tide running fairly strong on a 5.4m, the vote was to run offshore to the outer ground marks.
Fishing was by no means hectic but a reasonably steady picking throughout the day for the lads.
A good species day too with 10 different ones boated. Codling, Ling, Haddock, Pollack, Whiting, Norwegian Haddock, Pouting, Coaley, Gurnard and we also had our very first Mackerel of the year!!
Summertime is coming at last!
An hour before we set off for home I also caught sight of a Tuna breaching some 250 yards from the boat!
We will be looking into having a go for them sometime soon as well. Can’t wait for that.
Cheers for now and enjoy this cracking weather wherever you are. Tight lines.
Room for a few this coming Wednesday if you fancy a run out.

Best fish today was a Pollock just over 6lb with many cod around the 3 to 4lb area.
Young Theo aged 13 also showed everyone how to catch early on catching his first ever cod then managed to catch a few more
Great to see jigging starting to work again and the water showing signs of clearing just the may water to burn off and artificials should be dynamite again.
Best bait and rig today was squid strips on baited feathers.
Brilliant day to be at sea with the sun shinning the sea like a mill pond and great company.
Cheers lads hope you all enjoy the box of fish -

Massive thanks to the lads for coming from as far away as London for a run out today.

The day started off with a chill in the air, shrouded in a thick blanket of fog which lasted until mid-afternoon, until the sun finally burnt through. The south easterly swell seemed to have lingered on making it uncomfortable at times.
We started on the inner rough grounds and there were codling, pouting and coalies, but still no mackerel even on some of the favoured inshore shoaling wrecks.
The first few wrecks started slow, with the lads picking away at pouting, whiting, coalies, pollock and codling.
Once the tide started to flood, it was good to see the codling turn back on again in numbers after a notable absence a few days ago.
Nothing particularly noteworthy came aboard, other than a single Ling weighing in at just shy of 8lb (which isn’t too bad here for this time of year).
It was good to get back towards the Tyne later in the afternoon and continue to pick away at codling in the sunshine and calmer seas! -

We were dropped back in at 8:00am, and immediately picked up Ash and the guys who had travelled up from Barnsley for a run out today.
We set off to glorious conditions; flat seas and sunshine and it felt promising!
Not long after we had exited the Tyne piers, the light offshore breeze turned to the South East and began to slowly build throughout the day.
The first stop off consisted of a quick check for mackerel, as usual, but produced nothing; the first wreck give up a lovely pollack just shy of 6lb (no more debating weights for the sweeps on the new Reuben Heaton scales accurate to 1/500).
This set the tone for the remainder of the day; the guys fishing shads caught numerous lovely pollack also up to the 6lb mark. One decent codling came aboard weighing approx. 3 / 4 lb, and the remainder ranged from small to thumb size! Not a single Ling aboard throughout the entire day.
We headed home trying out a good number of the inner rough grounds, and again, the codling were smaller than the hooks :-)!
Cracking but incredibly challening run out, the lads fished hard up until late afternoon; and look forward to seeing them again soon.
