Report on-board Shy-Torque III
August has started really well for us here at Whitby both with the weather and with the fishing.
View Boats Page
Yesterday and today we have been shark fishing on the Shy-Torque, sadly with no fish showing again.
A mate of mine told me yesterday that the Icelandic fleet have taken some 500,000 tonnes of mackerel from the sea up there over the last 3 months. This has to have a massive impact on the way the sharks are feeding and is probably the main reason we have yet to boat one this year. That is one Hell of a lot of fish!!!!
The lads have however have had some good fishing on the ground whilst waiting for the big boy with plenty of small codling to 7lbs and an odd half decent ling popping up, the best going a shade over 14lbs for Peter Bloom from Pickering.
The weather is set to stay settled for the next few days here and with the tides falling to neaps again from tomorrow we should be seeing some good sport.
Pictured is Peter Bloom who looks after the seal and sea lions at Flamingo Land theme park.
His personal best to date at 14lb 3oz.

Report on-board Mistress
Another drop in tides again today saw us wrecking all day. We travelled a bit further offshore with the lads from Hull.
View Boats Page
The drift was around 1.6 knots to start with, once we had arrived at our mark. We took fish from the off today, with hardly any blank drifts. The fishing remained steady until slack water and it went off a bit.
The lads had already graced the deck with some cracking fish, Ling to 17lb to Steve who also had two others into double figures plus a box of smaller fish to himself.
Craig the organiser, managed half a box of fish with Cod approaching double figures, and Pollock to 8lb or so.
The other lads managed some respectable fish too taking a number of Ling over 10lb.
I wet a line too today and took Pollock and Cod on rhubabrd and custard sidewinders.

Today started out a bit shabby with a north westerly swell, despite that it was a nice sunny day. The tides are just beginning to drop too so hopes were running high for a few fish.
View Boats Page
With the breeze at the back of the tide we were drifting quite quickly first thing, but as the tide eased the sea began to flatten and it turned out nice. We took most of our fish from a wreck going into, over and just out of slack water.
The fishing was a bit slow, but everybody caught fish to take home, we had a mixture of Cod, Ling, Pollock, Mackerel, Whiting and Pouting. The biggest fish onboard was probably only around 10lb in weight so nothing big today.
The highlight was experiencing a Minky whale swimming around us for around half an hour, Ive never had one as close to the boat as this one. Please see the film clip in the video section

Sunday 5th August- Tide trip... Headed out to some regular marks to try and find some Mackerel and Bass, very slow this morning... Where have all the fish gone?! Spoke to some other local boats who are also having the same trouble... Landed a few but not as many as we would have liked... Will be trying somewhere different soon if this keeps up!!!
View Boats Page
Full day- Left the quay with another 7 customers and went and drifted a mark a few miles from where we Anchor to pick up some nice bait size Mackerel... Landed a handful and went and got anchored up. Had a run within the first 10 minutes and landed the first Tope, nice size at 38lb. Soon after had another run which we managed to get a fair way towards the boat however the fish spat the bait which is always a shame. 2nd fish landed was again a nice fish at 30lb. Went quiet for a while but soon picked back up when the tide eased and landed another fish at 28lb. After this decided to rebait... started pulling one of the rods in to find that all of a sudden the reel screemed off meaning another fish... fought the Tope all the way to the boat, nice energetic fish this one, however unfortunately after going to get it out of the water it shook its head and dived back under the boat and this fish was lost, however we got it to the side of the boat and had good sight of it. LAnded another fish after this a nice 36lb male. Good day had by all, nice fellas, hope to see them again soon! -

Report on-board Hard Labour
Sat 4th was booked as a hound fishing trip and it did not dissapoint. With one of our regular crews onboard and a bucket full of prime peeler crab we headed back to a mark fished the previous week. from the off sport was hectic with double, triple and quadruple hook ups. Many of the fish boated were double figure fish and heaviest for the day a shade under 15lb. The vast majority of the fish went back to fight another day, with a few of the smaller males kept by the party for the pot. Tally for the day was 77 hounds ranging from 4lb to 14lb 10oz.

Sun 5th another one of our regular crews and a mixed day of hound and bass fishing was asked for. The bass fishing was slow to be fair but approx 15 bass were boated up to 3.5lb. Again we went to the same spot as the day before for the hounds and again from the moment the hook was in the mud, the fish were obliging. After a couple of hours we started losing the tide and the fish with it. Final tally was 28 hounds biggest for the day a touch over 12lb.
A brilliant weekend of sport fishing on light gear -
