  • 01/07/2019 Fishing Report by dominic wilson on Dawn Venture (Portpatrick, Dumfries & Galloway)

1 Jul 2019 by dominic wilson

    Report on-board Dawn Venture

This report covers mid April to end of june…..
It was a slow start to the year with the first mackerel showing up in early April and then not seeing any more for another fortnight! They were very much feast or famine with us catching hundreds or none but there was plenty of herring mixed in with some coalies and launce and as of June 8th,there has been mackerel everywhere in big numbers providing younfish in the clear water.
The pollack have been plentiful on the wrecks upto 10lb with most around the 4-6lb range. They are however, for whatever reason, scarce under the cliffs with the best fish at 5lb and only a few fish showing up over long drifts under the cliffs.....room for improvement here(but it will!)
We have now started to catch really good numbers of spurdogs and huss...early on,when we would expect to see the huss pushing up from the south,we had a couple with the best at 10lb and then nothing.tHe spurdogs were the same...noticeable by there absence but we did find good numbers of them upto 14.6lb on the deep rough ground north of the village(14th may 50 spurs upto 13.6lb and 15th may 32 spurs upto 14.6lb).
However, with the increase in Mackerel the amount of ground sharks and their size has rocketed!(with a good early run of tope):
    20th June 30 huss(16lb)
    21st june 10 huss (14lb) + 1 spur (14lb) + 1 tope (35.5lb)(2 others lost)
    24th june 20 huss (13.8lb) + 10 spurs (17.6lb/16.8lb) + 1 tope (33.8lb)
    25th june 16 huss(17.5lb) + 4 spurs(15lb)
    26th june 31 huss (17.5lb) + 7 spurs(15lb) and in the evening 8 huss (12lb) + 3 spurs(12lb)
    27th june 30 huss (10.5lb) + 11 spurs(16.5lb/15.8lb)
    ***JACKPOT DAY*** 29TH JUNE …...20 huss (18.5lb) + 17 spurs (21lb/21lb/20.5lb(unofficial Scottish records!) + 6 tope(33.5lb/26lb/24lb/22lb/8lb/8lb)

Species landed this year so far: cod,haddock,whiting,pouting,ling,pollack,coalfish,lsd,huss,spur,smoothound,tope,grey/red/tub gurnard, mackerel, herring, launce, cuckoo wrasse, spotted ray

The inshore fishing on the Reefs, Banks, Mussel beds have produced Turbot, Brill, Plaice, Rays, Tope, Smooth Hounds,Congers Bull Huss , Black Bream, Bass, Gurnards etc.

It is nice to see the Black Bream up on the Reefs now.

Pictured is Mick Nunn with his 3Ib 8oz Black Bream which won him the Samkma/Flamer IV Fish of the Month award for June, the successful bait was squid and mackerel strip cocktail.

Sakuma Stinger Hooks sizes 1/0, 2/0 and 4/0 have been the favoured hooks for the inshore species.

My Next Reef/Bank trip with places available is on July 22nd.

  • 30/06/2019 Fishing Report by Jon Whitton on Alexia (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

30 Jun 2019 by Jon Whitton

    Report on-board Alexia

Not done an update for several weeks now as just can't seem to get 5 mins of late. The fishing till around mid June was slow but we kept at it and picked away steady to get our anglers some fish for the table, the water clarity wasn't as clear as we had liked making it hard WORK. Also the wcsa grand summer festival is now well underway and over the last week or so the water has cleared out and the fishing has been much improved with good numbers of cod and ling coming aboard aswell as a few belters along the way. The mackerel are now showing in greater numbers with plenty of feed in the water. Ryan pantellerisco fished with us on Thursday 27th June and first drop he landed himself a cracker of a cod weighing in on the wcsa scales at 10lb, 6oz and landing him a place in the cod section of the competition which still has to the 14th July to hang on. Yesterday also saw us take first place in the daily prizes with Lee chandler weighing in with a 7lb,8oz codling winning himself the £50 daily prize. Also yesterday we fished hard inside due to the strong winds and what a day the lads had boating well over 100 codlings from 2lb to 7lb,8oz. With them also boating a large amount of mackerel. Majority of fish were caught using hokkais, shads and squid bait when water clarity was coloured. Sadly we haven't as yet managed to get on the overall prize board as yet but with still just under 2 weeks to run in the festival there's time yet. We have limited spaces left in the festival so if you would like to get booked on check out the dates on our calender.
We are also still taking bookings for our 2hr and 3hr summer mackerel and cod trips throughout the school summer holidays, these trips are ideal for family's and beginners.

    Report on-board Mistress

Time for an update from us as we hit a day of bad weather at whitby!

The fishing this past week has been pretty good, some nice fish landed by our anglers, just missing out on the dailys buy a few oz each day.

We lost an enormous fish the other day, so it just goes to show theres still some big fish about.

Yesterday with the fresh sw winds we were kept well inshore, everything came together with the water clearing and we absolutely smashed it on shads, the 6 lads must have caught and returned around 150 codlings for the day, nothing big but most on the 2lb to 5lb range. They kept a few but a lot were returned.

Its been a while coming but it looks like the mackerel are set in at last too.

If youre interested in a trip with me, drop me a call or text on 07977 436903.

  • 30/06/2019 Fishing Report by Peter Mackintosh on Mistress (Tyne, Tyne and Wear)

30 Jun 2019 by Peter Mackintosh

    Report on-board Mistress

After landing a decent few mackerel for bait, we set off to do a few wrecks, however it was a tough day weather wise. Gradually the westerly wind gained in strength as the day went on, making the drift to quick at times for wreck fishing, so Tony opted to go on the hard ground.
It was a slow start, but by lunch time the fishing improved, with the cod starting to feed. We started to pick a few off each drift, in the 2lb to 3lb bracket. The fresh mackerel bait started to pay dividends on Ling rigs too. Shaun picked up a nice one, about 9 to 10 lbs, on a baited shad and another regular, Phil, had one about 7lb on baited Hokkai's. A couple of new lads aboard did quite well too, picking away at the cod for most of the afternoon. It was good to see one of them, who was a bit a novice, landing a fair few fish. He out fished yours truly. Well done. Considering the conditions, not a bad days fishing at all.

  • 30/06/2019 Fishing Report by Nick Gough on Skylark (Scarborough, North Yorkshire)

30 Jun 2019 by Nick Gough

    Report on-board Skylark

A fantastic weekend for us in sunny Scarborough.

Even though the tides were ideal for the wrecks we decided to stick to inshore fishing as we had really good results last week and it really paid off.

Best cod over the weekend was caught today and was 12lb 7oz we also had a double figure cod yesterday on our 6hr trip.

Also over the weekend we have seen a really good amount of cod and Pollock around 4 to 8lb and loads of other species to.

Feathers, hokkias and tubes seamed to be out fishing anything else and the waters are gin clear so ideal for light rock fishing on small lures and light tackle for those anglers who want more sport.
