Report on-board TROT- ON
Sorry for the late report but here goes, Wednesday the 10th of May found us at sea on probably the best day of the year so far at Whitby. The North East's premier cod spot. With flat calm seas and the sun on our backs the fishing was not quite fast and furious but steady. With the water clearing day by day we are hopefull for another good year. We steamed off to the 18 mile mark to try some wrecks. With a great bunch of anglers aboard the steam out passed very quickly. Arriving at Paul " Dolly" Eddons first wreck we were into coddling to about 5lb they were being taken on Shads, Bait and Hookki's. Along with Pollack, Ling, Whiting, Pouting and Haddock. As I was retriving a small coddling of about 3lb we had a Porbeagle shark of approx 6 - 7 feet long follow the coddling from the depths. He actually breached on the stern but nobody had a camera available to catch the breach. with that he sank back down to the depths. This created quite a buzz aboard. Trot On regular and Ex - W.C.S.A Spring festival winner Dave Makings was bringing a Haddock to the surface and this was also followed by our " New Friend" who wanted to investigate the struggling fish. This time we were ALL better prepared for a photo call. The rods went down and the camera's were out to catch some fantastic pictures. (Unfortunately I can only upload 1 pic to the report but a full report with Pics and video can be found on our FB site) . We tried a few more wrecks with similar catch results before a turn of tide quietend the fishing off. Which came just about the time to wind in and call it a day. All in all a great day to be at sea with Good company, Great Skipper, A varied selection of fish, On Whitby's Premier charter boat "Trot On"

Thankfully the weather gods have played ball with us this week, and with the small tides its meant we can get out to the wrecks, Shads have fished most consistently as the waters clearing all the time now,
A few of the days we have seen 50-60 fish (keepers, that's cod, ling and Pollock) with loads of throw back blegs and undersize codlings, with one day seeing a few less, but on the whole it has fished well for us.
I said on my last report id noticed some feed on my sounder and the mackerel wouldn't be long, we actually got our first one of the season the day after! they aren't here in numbers yet but I'm sure they wont be long now.

We went on a little tour yesterday visiting 8 wrecks with Bob and his fantastic crew. I had an idea where the Cod would be, took a little while to pin them down and very relieved when we did!

17/May With the fog giving visibilty only 50mts we headed out to a mark that is very safe when conditions are so,we caught the last hour the ebb the fishing was good from the off with plenty of Spottys straight away then Chris latched into a nice 5lb Rooker wen were up and running as these were what we came here for Gloria picked her rod up as it was bending over what a struggle getting it back to the boat in the net on the scales a lovely 10lb8oz male Rooker her PB then it was my turn another fine 6lb fish in the bag Tony and Nat had to be content with Spottys on this tide,as the flood picked up so the Spikeys started to feed what a great days fishing and to top it all Chris picked up a 6lb Stary to add to his list of fish today,BP.

finally the offshore bank decided to produce fish and what quality and amount did it produce!
after consulting with the boys afloat , it was agreed that we had landed in excess of 60 spurdogs with all but a couple over 10lb....the majority were in the 12-14lb bracket with the best at 17lb.The same amount of bull huss were landed with the biggest weighing 14lb....notable catches were Ron who had a double huss hookup with fish of 12.5lb and 8lb on the same line and Mike who landed a 14lb spurdog and an 8lb huss on a short dropper muppet rig.
preferred baits again were whiting or haddock flapper or mackerel head.
10 mackerel were landed along with grey gurnards, haddock, codling and whiting plus huss and spurs.
for the statistics,it is probable that we landed over 700lb of spurdog and around 500lb of bullhuss.....not bad for 6 anglers on a 7hr trip!!!
mike butterworth(pictured with a pb of 17lb) had a red letter day landing over 20 spurs and 10 huss -
