During the last set of neap tides the fishing in the Mersey has been hit and miss due to all the rain water we have had. Things are looking much better for the next set of neap tides, with only a few light showers forecast.

Well was a interesting day with steve yesterday as the happy dangler's went out on their first codquest of the winter, for some of us it was hard work, but over all was a good day as always.

Mike got the ball rolling with the first fish of the day, a little doggie that he reeled in super fast to beat me to the boat to get the bonus points.....it then went quiet for abit, Dan's rod bent over and we all hoped he was into the target fish, but when it came to the surface our hopes were dashed by a strap conger. As the day went on the eels just wouldn't leave dan's bait alone.....
Wayne managed the first cod of the day, of about 10 inches, gary then had a cod of 11lb 6oz, which came off the hook at the side of the boat and swam into the waiting net..... and was probably kicking himself as he didnt enter the £5 wager.....especially as the day moved on without any more cod showing.....
We moved into deeper water where dan continued to catch conger, my rod bent over and i was into a decent fish, but after a short fight all went light as whatever i had bit through my 60lb hook length.
Finally mike's rod went over (luckily spotted by steve) and his fight started.....was it the bottom as he didnt seem to be moving it.....but it soon became clear he had a decent fish on.....20minutes later with sweat on his brow we finally saw the leader....everyone was holding their breath in anticipation...what was it? A few thought it was an arse ended ray as there were no knocks to mikes rod, finally with some leader on his reel mike started to walk back up the boat with steve shouting instructions.....mikey quickly grabbing the bigger net as we finally got a glimpse of this huge cod.....now it was just a case of getting it into the net, which steve managed with perfection and with a heave lifted the cod over the gunnels to whoops and cheers.....after quickly weighing in steves bag and some photo's mike put her back, we were all abit worried as the cod bobbed back to the surface as it drifted back with the tide, but then with a flick of the tail she went back to the murky bottom......
For the last couple of hours we moved back inshore where a few more cod were landed by gary, john and wayne.
In total we had over 50 fish with 7 species made up of cod, whiting, conger, poor cod, pout, thornback ray and that rarest of bristol channel fish the doggie.....
All the cod came to either black lug tipped with squid and mike's lump (28lb 12oz) came in on a whole lundy squid....
Looking forward to getting back out with steve next sunday... -

Report on-board High Flyer 2
Bringing us up to date to the weekend of December 12/13th 2015, have put up with really blowy conditions last couple of weeks enough to test patience of a saint. Have managed a few trips inbetween keeping us inshore hugging the beach just to get fishing. Even though we have been plagued with whiting few good keepers among them with anglers kept busy all day, it is the cod people want to catch and unfortunately apart from the whiting knicking the baits the odd few cod about are not getting a look in. The main factor in all this is the temperature is so high for our seasonal average being so warm with our sea temperature round about 11 degrees still i fear too warm for our cold loving cod to appear in numbers yet. Today Sunday 13th was first opportunity with little wind to head out to deeper water fished in around 70- 90 ft off one of our banks which tails off to 130ft good cod mark in the past for us, today was good flatty mark! Apart from the whiting nothing else but few decent flatties no cod for us didnt hear any other boats with cod either. Tried a few other marks during the day and ended up for last hour right inside for more of the same. Wasnt a fantastic day fish wise but most enjoyable glad we tried off a bit hoping for our weather to become winter a bit! Big thanks to everyone Barry and his crew, two newbies on the Flyer from London Alex and Siergy, regular Dave Jones pressganged for a photo for today! Good lot of banter as usual, appreciate my xmas present still wearing them! Looking forward to next trip pray for cold weather everyone. Cheers . Jon (High Flyer)

After what seems like forever, storm after storm...!!! it looks as if we may get out tomorrow??.

Not sure what we are going to find, as we were out on Friday and it was blowing 36 mph SW conditions far from good, there was a few of us out there mostly Cats I must say, myself and John Rawle from our port Bradwell, and in the distance I could see a couple of white cats from the river Crouch I think, Hard Labour (Carl, or Shane,) at the helm, hope they did better than we did..??not sure who the other one was, I was too far away..
At the time of writing this, BBC breakfast news and weather is on, and it don't look good from Wednesday onward, so I am not expecting to get many trips in this week again...Arrgh..!!
I do sometimes get customers ask..." why are you cancelling? I thought you boat could handle the weather??"
Well the short answer is... yes the boat can take the weather, as can we, and we have worked in seas up to 3 meters in the Irish sea, but I don't think you would be happy trying to fish in those conditions, so like all responsible skippers even those with big Catamarans vessels we only have your best interest at heart, and not seen as just trying to extract cash out of you what ever the weather..!!
OK Guys n gals, that's it for now.if we do manage our trip tomorrow I will let you know how we got on..
photo of target species... Tight lines..!!
