    Report on-board Mistress

We have been seeing some nice fish again here at Whitby during the last month.

We also had our 1st EVER sharking trip after seeing a rather large Porgie swimming by the boat a few weeks back. Although we never landed the shark we hooked up to, we had a good look at it as it rolled on the surface near the boat then stripped some 250 yards of line before parting company with us! it looked to be well over 6ft long! We than had a further 2 runs before setting off for home. The fella who booked is a regular angler with me and has rebooked and is very eager for another go at them next month - watch this space!

The wrecking is throwing out a few better fish and we have seen a few into double figure this month, I think our best fish though is a cracking 8lb cat caught on the 21st of this month. It was the 2nd one caught by us this week. The 8lber is a new Mistress best, Phil the captor wasnt keen to take it home so I Kindly offered to take it!

    21 Jun 2013 by G Derham

    Report on-board Eastern Promise 2

It started as just another days fishing. Met office forecast was not brilliant but ok, we said good morning to Derek at about 07.00 and soon after we were heading out, just jogging along on tick over and were soon about 15 miles off, the wind turbines came and went and after about 45 minutes we dropped anchor. First fish was soon caught by the Master Thatcher James, a doggie so he gets a pound coin from each angler. A steady flow of fish followed Roker, Smoothounds and of course Doggies everybody was very happy and pulling each other’s leg, like you do. I asked Derek if there were any Mackerel about he said no (he tells you straight) so I put feathers on another rod and played about until I got bored no Mackerel here . But what’s this it’s a cup of that lovely tea coming out of the wheelhouse, fish are still coming everyone still laughing , leg’s are getting longer after about 3 hours (still catching fish) Derek said do you fancy a move as they are catching more fish closer in we said ok if you like, so the anchor came up and off we set, and we were off like a Scrambled Tornado Jet down the runway, we took our hats off so not to lose them, Then I thought he’s going the wrong way we were heading further out and out we went (this has to be paid for fuel and time you see but he knows we don’t mind) I didn’t ask as I knew he had something up his sleeve and not just his arm, after about another 7 or 8 miles the rev’s started to drop and we started going round and round in circles, I looked at the sounder and said to Derek is that a shoal of Mackerel he said no more like Whitebait, the anchor was dropped and the baits went over the side more Smoothounds, doggies more tea everybody happy. This is getting good plenty of fish a few hours went by then another very short move and all hell broke out We hit Bass returned about 20 and kept 35. (The Bass were spitting out Whitebait.) What a Fantastic day we also took Mackerel home. Where we, I know as Derek showed me on the plotter but it’s not for me to say as other skippers will read this so if you want to know more you will have to book the boat. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH DEREK See you in July.
Ps. Mark got the Fivers for the biggest fish a Roker.

Wrecking from Brixham on Spot On has been energetic to say the least this last weekend with a massive haul of fish, Cod a few Pollock and a ling made up the days catch.

    The numbers are as follows:
A huge haul of Cod, a few Pollock and a ling caught on Spot On! from Brixham Devon. over 300 Fish, 36 Doubles which included the following 2x23lb, 1x19lb, 2x16.5lb, 3x16lb, 3x15.5lb, 4x15lb, 4x14b, 6x12lb, 11x10-11lb. Just wish every day was this good, 10 anglers and 10 bent rods pretty much every drift.

Pictured is a few of the fish on the deck.

The skerries continue to fish well with good numbers of plaice being caught and a massive fish of over 7lb landed by a private boat.
Spot On! is only a short steam away from the skerries and will guarantee you at least 8 hours fishing time on the banks. So more time with lines in the water.

  • 15/06/2013 Fishing Report by Sam Cumming on Silver Spray II (Poole, Dorset)

15 Jun 2013 by Sam Cumming

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

Last month’s improved fishing has continued right into June, with the aid of some good weather, I’ve only had to cancel one trip in the last 4 weeks. It is never fully the summer season until the mackerel shoals arrive properly and they started showing in good numbers in the last week of May. Unfortunatly this was just a touch too late for my first trip to Cherbourg this year as we only managed to catch 3 mackerel in as many days. Despite this the weather was on our side and we had a good trip with mainly pollock and cod hitting the deck but also a few ling and bass aswell. Gareth Awbery landed a nice double figure cod just after slack water to find that something had bit its tail clean off, the wound must have been a couple seasons old as it had fully healed but it amazes me that it could survive after such a major injury. I finally managed to get an Alderney trip in with nice weather to go with it; you know you have had a couple of bad ones when you are saying east/northeast force 4 is nice weather! The banks fished well with Steve Bealing pulling out the best turbot of the trip at 13lb, Steve’s brother Graham managed to catch 3 turbot on the same sandeel flapper one drift after another.
I mentioned in my last report I didn’t think that the summer cod had fully arrived and I, and my anglers, were glad to see I was correct with a few days bringing over 20 fish to the boat. One day Silver Spray regular Bill Thornton caught 9 cod with the biggest coming on an orange twin tail with a lead head and weighing in at 21lb 4oz, hoping to get out there again soon to find a few more of that size. On our side of the channel the first of the mackerel have of course brought in the tope and bass with them. Although the fishing has been good so far it seemed like the fish were easily spooked and on some days wanted live mackerel on the bottom and others wanted lures high up in the water. I am hoping for another good season with some big fish as we have already seen our first double. Whilst drifting just after slack one day waiting for the tide to build Gary Legg managed to catch something sizeable on a live mackerel, we all assumed it was a tope until it was in the net and had 2 large spikes sticking out of its dorsle fins. The spur dog weighed in at 22lb and could have potentially have been a new record, it was certainly the biggest one I have seen. I’m looking forward to writing next month’s report with the first of the freeline bass trips and a few more journeys across the channel.

  • 20/06/2013 Fishing Report by Bob Marshall on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

20 Jun 2013 by Bob Marshall

    Report on-board Duke IV

The inshore Skate fishing remains good with some unusually large male fish around with herring still the bait of choice. The weather has been making life difficult for all the boats but Duke IV managed to reach the offshore wrecks yesterday and although the fishing was tough we ended the day with a reasonable haul of Cod to 8lb. Perseverence proved the key to success with the crew finding best results on small shad lures.
Smoothound fishing still good with some quality fish, crab being the bait of choice for these hard fighters.
July and August will see large Bass looking for the Mackerel and Whiting. Whole Squid or a large mackerel fillet is the way for the big girls although the Doggies also find these baits tasty and can eat their way through a lot of bait, fish a live bait when the water is clear for best results.
Pic shows Paul & Stu with part of yesterdays Cod catch
With weekday and some weekend dates still available for groups and individuals, give me a call and come fishing off Ramsgate aboard Duke IV
