In between the codling and rays there have been one or two bass showing. Some schoolies and some lovely chunky fish. after Andy lost one on our first trip back in the water at the start of February some even better fish made it to the net. Barry has the biggest so far with a nice 6lber but not to be left out his good friend Charlie had a decent bass a couple of trips later. If you know these lads there is always a healthy rivalry between them as well as plenty of banter. I don’t think Charlie was too disappointed that his was a tad smaller as it was still a cracking early season fish.
Our general trips have continued to produce numbers of codling and thorn-backs with lots of whiting and dogfish keeping us busy as well as a few other bonus species.
Further afield we are chasing spurdogs, hounds, rays, bass and other species including the occasional codling off there too and with any luck a proper one at that.
I have individual spaces and possibility of full boat bookings over the coming weeks and months if you want to get out.
Please be advised that a steady trickle of dates are filling up for 2023 so please get in touch asap if you require a specific date.
Remember it is often worth giving me a shout if you are cancelled else where and still wish to get out, as we have lots of sheltered fishing available and a big catamaran which makes it even more comfortable.

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
Today we had an Ian Purdom “Uptiding Masterclass” aboard Sea Urchin.
View Boats Page
With a rising tide back over five meters and light winds, we had almost perfect conditions. Using the Ebb tide we headed a couple of miles north to start off. With the anchor down we spent an hour or so picking away some Codling. Nothing much of any size, but almost everyone got off the mark. Ian Purdom took the biggest Codling nudging 5lb.
Once it quietened off we headed further north and tried up near Kettleness. We got a few fish, but then started to lose the tide. We took the opportunity to run up past Port Mulgrave to get the first of the flood as it came through. During slack water, it appeared we had gone to “Dogs Trust” as we had a raft of the kritters pestering us. As the Flood tide kicked in a few Codling made an appearance. For the rest of the day we worked our way, picking away, back down towards Whitby.
We often say that bait is the key to get the very best from Uptiding. Today it certainly proved to be the case. We always recommend Squid & Black Lugworm to our anglers. There is currently a shortage of frozen Black Lugworm in Whitby, so six of the eight anglers didn’t have any to use.
By contrast Ian Purdom brings his bait with him from Lowestoft. He’s an incredibly experienced angler so knows exactly what he’s doing, but his Fresh Worm and Squid baits saw him catch almost as much as the rest of the boat put together! He had twenty Codling in size plus another half a dozen to chuck back, plus Doggies and a couple of Pouting. He caught everywhere we stopped.
On every trip this winter Ian’s been on, he’s been “Top Rod”. He spends the money on fresh bait, because he knows it’s worth it. Well done Ian….fantastic angling.
Credit to the other lads, they stuck at it and everyone had fish to take home. I’d have liked to see a few better fish, but it was a day spent in great company and literally flew by. Thanks lads.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Huge thanks to the lads for an impromptu run out today.
View Boats Page
We set off this morning with pretty much no wind and very calm seas, as compared to the last month of relentless northerly swells!
Once the slack water had almost passed, we dropped the anchor on the inner rough ground and waited for the tide to start to flood.
There were no bites whatsoever for the first 30 minutes, but once the tide began to properly push, codling, pouting and whiting began to come onboard in waves.
As we approached the midday slack water, we hauled anchor and headed out to try a few wrecks; we tried every type of bait and rig but nothing noteworthy made an appearance other than a nice little haddock and numerous big fat pouting.
Once the tide began to ebb, and the drift speeds increased, we stopped for some refreshments before the steam home.
Fantastic run out for this time of year, with great craic and conditions!
If you fancy a day on the water contact the skipper, Geoff, on 07740 706007 with all enquires. -

Fishing Report by Andy Savage
on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl
After a month lay off with poor weather, we’ve finally had a bit of respite. With nothing to go on (in terms of productive areas), yesterday we had a mixed day.
View Boats Page
With it being a small 4.4m tide, we started off on a wreck and then rough ground at nine miles. We picked up a few small Codling, but nothing like we had a few weeks before. We then ran back in to put the anchor down. Again, a handful of small Codling, then it just tailed right off. We optimistically tried an inshore wreck in the afternoon for absolutely nothing, which to be fair I expected at this time of year with the coloured water. The day was really hard work, but was spent in great company which always makes a difference.
Today, with a building tide, and the exploits of the day before firmly in my mind, I opted to Uptide all day. We fished the last hour of the Ebb just off the Whitby Rock Top, and thankfully there were a few Codling moving through. Everyone got off the mark, and Steve Martin nicked a nice 4lb Codling before I’d even made the tea!
Once we lost the tide we ran south to an area which had been productive in February. The flood came through and the fish started feeding. We moved once during the whole of the flood tide and picked away steadily. Nothing massive, but lovely clean fish, with the best Codling going 5lb.
Most fish fell to Squid and Black Lug, but a couple surprisingly came to jelly-worms!! It quietened off as we lost the flood tide, so we ran back up to where we started and finished with some more nice Codling on the first flushes of the Ebb.
Andras Pinti was Top Rod today, taking 14 nice Codling plus some throwbacks. Everyone got a few and the banter was fantastic. A really enjoyable day.
Thanks for your excellent company boys.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Sea Urchin IIl

Report on-board Shy-Torque III
Yesterday was our first trip out for over 4 weeks and a very pleasant trip it was too.
View Boats Page
We started the day on a bit of scrap 12 miles North of the harbour. This produced a nice picking of Codling till just before lunchtime for the lads. We then popped out to another wreck which didn’t produce much at all, however I did think this was because we’d lost the drift completely with a light SE breeze holding the boat still.
I managed half a dozen myself on the shad indicating clear water but the the 40 odd Codling the lads landed were all on the baited rigs.
Big tides looming next week so any trips will be of the Uptiding nature.
Cheers for now,
Rich

Fishing Report by Scott Belbin

Report on-board Galloper
Still plenty of nice codling and rays coming in at the moment along with whiting, dogfish and other species too. The weather has been all over the place of late but those codling seem to be drawing the lads out there despite this.
View Boats Page
The lads from Suffolk police were faced with some unsavoury conditions for their trip last week. Given the option of a very early or very late start the lads opted for the later. I must admit as I drove down to the boat through the rain I was questioning our sanity. However the lads were keen as ever to get out on their first trip of the year. I was also relieved to hear that they had chosen not to have their usual match as they wanted to try for codling and these don’t score very well so it made sense. So armed with over 900 lugworm and a cool box of squid we made our way out into a strong east to south-easterly wind. I wasn’t sure how far we would get as there were sizeable white horses rolling in the entrance to the moorings but the conditions suited Galloper well and it was far more comfortable than expected as we punched down to our chosen mark. The late start meant we didn’t get any baits in the water until 10am so we would have as long with the wind and tide together as I would have liked. Thankfully we dropped straight onto the fish and in the first couple of casts a couple of codling came aboard for Tony and Adam. The obligatory dogfish and whiting soon followed along with more codling and one or two rays. Condition deteriorated as the day progressed with sleet and snow flurries but the lads effort didn’t. by high water we had exceeded my expectations but still hoped for more so had a move over slack tide. to my surprise the next tide fished well too with a couple more codling coming aboard shortly followed by more rays. The lads had endured enough by now so we called it a day at 4pm and headed for home. It may not have been the biggest catch of the week but it was a rewarding one in challenging conditions. I was really pleased to see 12 codling and 8 rays among the dogfish and whiting on a day like that. As many of you know I don’t like to say nice things too often, particularly about serving and former police officers. However full credit to the lads for putting in the effort in those conditions, I think they enjoyed it as much as they endured it. there were times when I looked out at the snow settling one their backs and shoulders. which made me consider turning the wheelhouse heating off in solidarity but I thought better of it as they kept dragging me out to net fish.
For any cod police or wannabe grettle thunderbirds please scroll on past. Some codling were harmed in the making of this report. The fish that were kept were over 100mm the 35cn minimum landing size for cod. They were caught in the most sustainable way and many were returned. If you want to harass or troll somebody please find one of the many local commercial boats targeting these same fish, keeping them far small and keeping many times more. If you wish to make a real difference then your time would be better spent lobbying for a larger size limit and commercial restrictions. I feel I have to put this as several people seem to feel the need to pick on fellow anglers and charter boats that are far from the real problem with fish stocks and I am fed up with it.
Further afield we are chasing spurdogs, hounds, rays, bass and other species. There is of course a good chance of seeing a cod off there too and with any luck a proper one at that.

Yesterday was our 1st trip of the season, I had party made up from Mistress regulars that have fished with me on many occasions, so I knew the banter would be on top form.

I was eager to hit some spots that I know wont have been touched since I was last on them. The fishing wasnt as fast as I would of liked but we took fish on every spot we fished, and we had some absolute belters among them too.
The best was taken by Alan Keys, which took the boat scales to around 12lb, we also had a couple of others bouncing 6-7lb, the rest made up by 2-5lbers, everything under 40cm went back for another day, our last move of the day saw the rods bouncing away finishing on a high note, we stayed a bit longer as we were having a great time, we finished the day with around 50 codlings (including throwbacks)
If you fancy a trip with me, theres a list of dates and prices pinned to the top of my facbook page, Mistress Sea Angling Charters.

Starting next month we will be hosting a “Heaviest fish of the month “ on the Shy-Torque III
View Boats Page
We will run this every month from 1st April to 31st October.
There is no entry fee and the winner will receive a free trip if he or she lands the winning fish of the month.
Any contending fish will be weighed when we are laid at rest in the harbour where there is no movement from the boat. This will be the fairest way of weighing accurately.
A brand new set of “Salter” digital scales will be used and will be calibrated.
The winners will have 12 months to use their free trip.
Good luck to everyone!!
The Spring competition (starts 1st April) is fast approaching here at Whitby where the W.C.S.A will be giving £1000.00 in cash for the overall heaviest fish caught over the fortnight.
A £50.00 daily prize in cash is also up for grabs for the heaviest fish of the day.
We still have places left for our first competition of the year.
