    Report on-board TopCat Charters

Today our party wanted to fish for skate, a bit of unusual request of recent, as we are always being asked for mackerel trips. We set off in slightly bumpy waters, anchored up and started a day of fishing. We caught the occasional DogFish as always, then a really decent Gurnard. Then there was Bass, Pouting and in-between all the other fish caught the ThorneBack Rays appeared!

    Hi
Out today and although it was blowing hard from the SW we could fish quite comfortably.
We had tope to 40lb, Huss to 12lb plus Mackerel, Pollock and some Bass to 4 1/2 lb.
We are worth trying if you get blown off in SW winds elsewhere.
    Cheers
    Pat

  • 08/2019 Fishing Report by Sam Cumming on Silver Spray II (Poole, Dorset)

    Aug 2019 by Sam Cumming

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

Again I find myself sat in my lounge on a Saturday rather than taking you guys out after the bass or plaice, just seems to be our luck that the wind is always blowing just a little bit too much this year. The fish have definitely been keen to get involved when we have managed to get out. Starting inshore the plaice have been good fun on the spinning rods with fish over the 3lb mark coming every trip, not quite hit 4lb recently but can’t be too far away. This type of drift fishing has been hampered by the weather a lot as a light westerly is best but we seem to always have 15 knots or more to contend with, giving us an unnatural drift speed. Out on the bass grounds the fishing has been brilliant with most of the fish coming to lures. Plenty of small fish in there of about 2lb heading back for next year and a nice one for the table for everyone that wants one. On the smaller tides the tope have provided great sport mixed in with all types of rays, some congers, huss and even the always welcome bonus turbot. I always try to have a shark rod out on a float whilst tope fishing, all the large mackerel flappers going up and down through the tide sets up a pretty handy chum trail. Last Monday it was it was clearly well worth a go when the first conger up to the boat was bitten in half by something with big teeth. After a few hours knocking out the tope the clicker screamed off on the shark rod and the lads were rewarded with a nice porbeagle of about 6 feet in length, good signs for our upcoming shark trips if we can get the weather. Our last wreck trip of the year turned out to be one of the best for cod with one small wreck producing all the fish. Along with ling and congers at anchor I think good fun was had by all. We are looking forward to finally getting over to Alderney next week as we haven’t managed to get over there since May. 2020 bookings are up to date for Alderney and Guernsey trips so get booking now.

  • 08/2019 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

    Aug 2019 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

summer 2019 keeps marching on, as I write it doesn’t look much like summer out side my window but we will be back out fishing again very soon. Our run of good weather may have come to an end but the good fishing has continued. The larger hounds moved further afield towards to end of last month. There is still some good fishing to be had within the sheltered areas but the direction of wind and size of the tide need to be right to make it worth while. We have snuck a few days in when these work in our favour and of course the weather has been pleasant on several days in between. when we have got out we have found some nice mixed fishing. the average size of smooth-hound has been down on the earlier part of the year but there are still good numbers and a few double figure fish showing among them. The thorn-back rays have been showing in numbers too. these are a smaller stamp of fish than we tend to see in the spring or autumn but there are still a few better fish in there and they will be bigger as time goes on. We are still seeing plenty of bass on most trips. The lads have had some lovely chunky fish and sometimes in very shallow water. The other day we were fishing in such shallow clear water I could see the anchor! Its hard to beat catching a 3-4lb bass on light gear in water like this. Watching them dart around all over the place as they have nowhere else to go. The bass should hang around until the end of October in places and I have offered some offshore bass trips up accordingly. Hopefully we are due an Indian summer. The highlight of last month for me was a ‘nearly’ fish. this area isn’t known for its variety of species, I have seen several on the boat over the years (we’re up to 32 on CBUK) so something different is always nice. I got a surprise when we were packing up the other day. I was hauling the anchor and the last few lads were winding in when Dave’s reached the surface and there was a red mullet hanging off of his 4/0 hook! Although these fish show regularly in nets in the autumn around here its not what we were expecting while fishing for hounds. I shut the capstan down and darted for the net but as dave lifted it in it fell off, sat on the surface a few moments then swam off.

  • 16/08/2019 Fishing Report by dominic wilson on Dawn Venture (Portpatrick, Dumfries & Galloway)

16 Aug 2019 by dominic wilson

    Report on-board Dawn Venture

This report covers period 19th july - 16th August

When the wind allows,we have been getting out and the fishing has been good with some days being great.I have lost track of how many spurdogs over the 20lb mark we have landed with the best at a whopping 23lb....these sharks are getting bigger each year and more prolific and I don't doubt that some will top 25lb next year!....the best tally for spurdogs in the reporting period is 38 landed with all being 12-17lb with a few bigger ones mixed in. we have had mixed results with the huss with the best going 18.5lb in the past month. The tope are more numerous this year and we have had 5 in a day twice last month which is well up on last year and we have lost a good few through biteoffs!...more common skate continue to show with the last 2 at 185lb and 188lb.The pollack fishing in the weeds has improved vastly with floatfished mackerel belly being very productive...there was also a good run of codling and haddock during the big spring tides where we were fishing closer in out of the tide run.
The mini mackerel have now arrived in plague proportions and strings and strings of them are possible....at less than 6" long they make great bait!
Species landed this month : cod ,haddock, whiting, pouting, pollack, coalfish, poorcod , ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, common skate, tope, spurdog, huss, smoothound, LSD, mackerel, herring, launce, red/grey/tub gurnard, dab( 22 species)

bookings still being taken for this year but first available weekend date is sunday 13th October
the boat is staying afloat this winter so uptiding for cod is on the agenda

bookings now being taken for 2020 (mobile 07739231331)

    photo is 188lb common skate

    Hi
We fished a fire brigade competition this week. It was a species hunt and we had 14 or so species. 60 or so wrasse and over 59 huss to 10lb.
It was a very windy day so we were limited with what we could do. We fished inshore all day and didn't stop catching.
    Cheers
    Pat
