    Report on-board My Way 2

    Porbeagle Shark
    06th September 2016

For years we've encountered the odd shark during our fishing exploits off Holyhead, bitten fish, snapped lines etc. This year we decided to bite the bullet and invest in new gear, fact finding trips, so much reading and then finally set out to target sharks.
This week has been planned for a long time & foul weather was all set to scupper our chances, but a break in the winds saw us set sail early doors today, 50lb class gear, custom made wire shark traces and enough rubby dubby to sink a smaller boat!

Baits in the water and floats set, we had a couple dropped hooks and false calls with small tope before one rod twitched around 4hrs into our day. Quickly line started to scream from the reel and after a few mins it was clear this was something, it was no tope. After so long in the planning, a 90 minute epic battle was soon underway. So many darting runs, remaining under the boat, around the boat and up the bow on 4 separate occasions. Make no mistake, this shark was in charge. When it first broke the surface the screams and gasps were loud, we had managed to hook a porbeagle shark, and a bloody big one too.

Then it ran again, 4 times we had it to the side of the boat, rubbing trace held twice, but it wasn't ready to meet us. On the fourth occasion, we were preparing to land, and the most devastating noise was heard … snap … oops, the rod snapped (stop laughing ), the line broke and the shark swam free. A deathly silence fell upon My Way!

Question, was the mission a success?

Of course it was! So much planning and preparation and then on our first attempt we hooked and technically released, a porbeagle shark that was well in excess of 100lb.

  • 09/09/2016 Fishing Report by Ian Dale on Kelley's Hero Charters (Gosport, Hampshire)

9 Sep 2016 by Ian Dale

    Report on-board Kelley's Hero Charters

We haven’t had much to report on over the last few weeks. A lot of our trips had to be cancelled due to the heavy weather that was coming in. We had to cancel a few of our plaice trips, our last wrecking trip of the season and an evening sole fishing.
Thankfully we have managed to get them all to book again. Lets hope the weather agrees.
Our first trip we headed on was a Plaice trip, we had a boat full of eager fisherman waiting to see a few spots. Once we got there it was slack water so it took a while for the bites to start. As the tide picked up so did the amount of fish that was caught. We saw plenty place up to the 3lb mark, a brill of 2lb 5oz, and a few mackerel. Everybody caught and had plenty, and we returned a load to fight another day.

On the 26th Kelley’s Hero had an appearance from Total Sea Fishing Magazine, we took them out on another trip looking for Plaice mainly, with the aim to go hunting for a bass as the tide picked up. Yet again as we got there the tide was just about slack and we had to wait for it to pick up to get some bites. The plaice were hard work and after a flurry, it went dead again. So after a lot of thought, we decided to head out and see if we could catch some bass whilst the tide was right. In an hours fishing we had around 20 bass, all bar two were sizable. This made the day. On the way in from this trip we had the rescue helicopter come along and practice putting a man on the deck. That was the perfect way to end a days fishing.

We had a couple more trips over the next few weeks. Again the plaice were slow on the ebb and whilst the tide was slack, but we had to hit it hard whilst the tide was flooding to get the most out of our day. The biggest plaice was 3lb and we also saw a nice red mullet of 11oz.

Things are looking up and we have the winter cod fishing to look forward to. Bookings are coming in and the diary is filling up nicely. If you would like to book a last minute plaice trip or a winter cod trip please get in contact via email: iandale@kelleys-hero.com or call: 07795538933

  • 09/2016 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie on Size Matters (Craobh Haven, Argyll & Bute)

    Sep 2016 by Kevin McKie

    Report on-board Size Matters

[This report was written when Size Matters was operating from Plymouth]

The shark fishing from Plymouth is the best they have had in year's, some boats are reporting over 30 sharks a day!!
Most are in the 20lb to 60lb range but there are a few over 100lb being caught. Catching lot's of small shark's is a very good sign for the future and show's the UK shark population is doing well.
The highlight of the last week was seeing three baby Porbeagle sharks caught, one of them was tiny and must of only been a month old. We just need to find it's mother now and hope we are lucky enough to land it. Also one of my angler's was using a water wolf camera above his baited feathers when we where fishing a inshore wreck for Whiting, the footage he has got of a Porbeagle shark is un real, it's probably the best footage of a shark I have seen in UK water's. He is going to edit the footage and let me have a copy, I will post it when I receive the copy. On the offshore wreck's we have been catching Pollack to 10lb and Ling to 22lb 8oz. On the inshore wreck's there is odd pollack and plenty of conger to 37lb, we had 50 in just 4 hours one day.
Over the next week I will be chasing shark's and Conger so if we get some good weather, we mite just get lucky and catch a few monster's.

    Cheers
    Kev

    Report on-board Morgan M Charters

well what a year this has been so far the skate fishing was unbelievable with most days averaging 80 skate a day with many trips producing well over 100. the smoothound fishing was pretty good as well with many days 8 people hooking up all at once very hectic with many fish over the 20lbs mark. the tope fishing wasn't bad with some of the crouch boats getting them to over 70lbs and the bass fishing has been good as well with most of the crouch and southend charter boats have had bass to well over double figures and. we have even had a go at the plaice and turbot this year with some crouch and southend boats having 35 a trip to well over 4lbs.no frills no spills no gimmicks just proper fishing. most crouch boats are taking bookings for 2017 . making the crouch and southend charter boats one of the premier destination for 2017.

    Report on-board Dawn Venture

the wind has been a problem for most of august and now into september , but on saturday with a better forecast ,we put to sea with adrians' boys from preston.scratching around inshore,we caught the usual suspects of codling, haddock, whiting, doggies, small huss, small coalies & pollack along with all 3 gurnard species, mackerel, herring and sandeel.A break in the wind let us nip offshore and it paid dividends...we got 4 huss,2x 10lb 1x 18.5lb and a monster 21lb 4oz!!
That huss as I was informed 2 days later would have beaten the scottish boat record by about 1lb.....so I suppose,we caught an unofficial boat record.....well done graham
