  • 02/04/2016 Fishing Report by James Michael Redden on Sapphire 2 charters (Sunderland, Tyne and Wear)

2 Apr 2016 by James Michael Redden

    Report on-board Sapphire 2 charters

Despite drizzly weather and a slightly uncomfortable swell for those of us without good sea-legs my son Mark and I just had a great day out aboard the Sapphire. There were just seven of us fishing on the boat including second in command Michael who only fished intermittently between rushing to the aid of anyone who happened to get his sinker anchored to whatever wreck we were fishing or re-tackling for the three young guys at the stern who were using the boats rods. Both he and skipper Peter were ever-present and quick to recognise and assist someone with a problem which meant fishing could be resumed with the least amount of fuss and time lost. (I've encountered many skippers who never left the wheelhouse and deck-hands who were both brusque and taciturn when being put upon to sort the problems of us lesser-mortals) Although the fish were not always playing fair by leaping onto our baited hooks whenever we wanted them to it never got boring either as we moved frequently enough to keep the excitement of expectation alive. Needless to say, I was more than happy with my catch with the biggest two fish being a nice six-pound cod which was soon to be over-shadowed by a whopping great Pollack weighing in at sixteen and a half pound. ( Well, I did quip after catching the six-pounder that the next one has to be in double figures) Son mark also caught a similar-sized cod as did others on the boat and no-one on the boat left without a fish in the bag.
Now, I've been on boats before where either the lack of fish, the sea-state or the weather could easily lead to a really miserable day but with the jocular double-act of Peter and Michael keeping up the spirits with their jolly brand of humorous banter it's hard to see how your day could be miserable aboard the Sapphire. The Sapphire therefore is what I would call a "Happy Boat". It has my wholehearted recommendation so in the immortal words of Arnold Schwartzeniger and some American WW2 general who may be called Patton: I'll be back!!!

  • 31/03/2016 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

31 Mar 2016 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

    31.03.16.

A perfect weather forecast gave us a shot at redemption today on the previous days efforts!!

A perfectly calm day allowed us to cruise out at a steady 15 knots to one of favourite offshore marks 26 miles off.

When things aren't particularly good on the inshore marks, mainly due to the water clarity, we can usually find a "picking" out there and that is exactly what the lads did.

On arrival the lads were straight in to the fish and a steady stream of codling and ling were coming aboard for the best part of the day. Total tally for the lads was 75 cod, 8 ling and some good quality whiting. Best bag on the boat was 15 cod.

Cheers and tight lines as ever.
    Rich
