    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Well, I've just returned from a fantastic weeks fishing on Lake Windemere with my in laws. Great company and great fishing. Batteries are now fully charged again and we're raring to go!!

A group of lads from Wakefield and Hornsea joined us today and dropped on some lovely weather. The fishing wasn't outstanding but the conditions made up for it.

Top rod today was Dean Winfield from Hornsea with 10 fish (quite acceptable!) Heaviest fish today was a ling of 12lb caught by Jeff Naylor from Wakefield. Listening to a lot of the conversations on the radio today it turned out that our day wasn't too bad at all !!!!

The lads all thoroughly enjoyed the trip and will be back again soon.

    Cheers for the company lads.

Pictured is Jeff Naylor with his ling.

  • 06/10/2012 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Lady Grace (Brightlingsea, Essex)

6 Oct 2012 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Lady Grace

I had my first winter beginners fishing trip booked this weekend. I wouldnt usually take bookings quite yet as sometimes the codling can be slow coming in but I had heard of few being caught and was persuaded by the person wanting to go fishing, Daniel Cooper, to take my first booking this early in the season. He specifically wanted to go on 6th October as it was his girlfriend, Hannah's, birthday on the Friday and he booked it as a surprise as she had always wanted to go fishing. He hired the whole boat for 3hours. Saturday morning arrived and the pouring rain in the night had eased to light drizzle. By the time I had got my boat in ready and set the rods up it had dried out and the sun emerged through the clouds as we headed out through the moorings. Hannah was so excited. It was so different from their normal lifestyle of living in London. They are both medical students working towards becoming doctors next year which will then take a further 5-7 years to qualify as a doctor in the area they choose to specialise in. Hannah hopes to become an accident and emergency hospital doctor whereas Daniel is keen to be a physciatric doctor. On the way out the tide was down far enough I could show Hannah the wading birds, something I take for granted but she hasnt seen before. As we dropped the anchored and cast out waiting eagerly for our first fish we admired the view. Its not often I get a chance to stop and look at the beauty around me and really appreciate it, Im always on the go and never seem to stop. The view was breath-taking as we looked back on Mersea. Mersea seems to have its own weather system, above our heads was cloudy but Mersea was clear blue cloudless skies, but as the morning progressed the clouds disappeared above us as well. We started catching a few whiting which really pleased Hannah and Daniel as they had arrived later than expected and this limited their fishing time which always puts pressure on you as a skipper as it also limits their chances of catching anything. While we sat waiting and hoping for a codling the seal popped his head up in the distance which made Hannah's day, she wanted to see more of the seal and as we sat fishing the seal got closer and closer which really pleased her. After this we had a couple of nice plate sized whiting which Hannah and Daniel were keen to take home for their dinner so watched eagerly as I measured to make sure they were big enough to keep which fortunately they were. Unfortunately Mr Cod didnt come to play before it was time to haul the anchor but that didnt matter to Hannah and Daniel as they had enjoyed being out in the fresh country air with the glorious sunshine beaming down on them while out on a boat in the River Blackwater. When they left they were aiming for the Company Shed for a spot of lunch but before they had lunch there was something Daniel had planned to do. They headed off to the beach that they had ben looking back on from the boat earlier and Daniel proposed to Hannah and she said 'yes'. So it was a celebration lunch in the Company Shed for them and I had an email from Daniel later to thank me for helping them kick the day off so nicely. It is so nice to think I played a part in their special day of engagement, Daniel had told me he had looked at hiring so many different boats around the coast so to think he chose mine is a real credit to Lady Grace.

I was disappointed we hadnt caught a cod yesterday so I headed out early Sunday morning on my own for a few hours, no cod but I was extremely pleased to catch a sized bass this late in the season in the River so my bass made up for no cod. Maybe on my next trip the cod will come out to play.

    Report on-board Mistress

What a cracking day we had today!

With the tides being a bit lively still and the clarity not being exactly perfect, we decided on a run offshore to work the wrecks on the 20 mile stream.
The tide times werent perfect either so I got the crew gathered for a 630am sailing to get an extra hour of tide to help us on our way!

The first wreck yielded nothing! so we steamed a further 3 miles to our next wreck, Bingo! we fished steadily for a couple of hours, taking fish on all patterns and colours of shad and also squid. The bait took the better fish.
everyone onboard had some lovely cod to take home by the time we finished at our 2nd wreck.

With an hour or two left we moved to wreck nearby, and with a few drifts we had the fish boxes bulked out further, a couple of the drifts had Deano running round like a headless chicken with the net, with fish all around the 8lb - 9lb mark.
A good finish to the end of an already good days angling aboard Mistress

Pictured are the lads with a few of their fish at the end of the day.

In my opinion the best months of the year for the big cod offshore are just around the corner here at Whitby.

Once the herring spawn is out of the way we can expect the cod to be feeding properly on the bottom again.

Some cracking fish well in to double figures from this time onwards last year.

Here's hoping for the same again this year!!

Have a look on our availability calendar and get a trip booked soon for some lovely winter cod!!

  • 15/10/2012 Fishing Report by Rich Cope on Mistress (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

15 Oct 2012 by Rich Cope

    Report on-board Mistress

    October 2012

We are still only half way through October I know, the weather has turned a bit now, but the fishing still remains good here at Whitby when we can actually get to sea.

The past couple of weeks the water inshore has coloured due to a few days of bad weather, meaning we have had to search futher afield for the fish. The days we have got offshore working the wrecks 20 miles + from Whitby, we have experienced some exellent days sport for the anglers aboard Mistress. The days have seen a rod average easily of 10-15+ fish per angler on the shads.

As the month draws on the weather may give us some bad conditions, the strong SW winds allow us to fish inside at anchor, boat casting for the cod. The shore fishing season has started now (being a keen shore angler I know what is being caught up and down the coast), there are alot of codling in the 2lb to 4lb bracket being caught and we are seeing fish approaching double figures also.

The uptide competition runs November 10th to 18th and Im sure we will see some cracking fish weighed in, there are still a few places available, please contact me on 07977 436 903 to secure your places, Mistress won the Uptiding competition last year taking 1st and 3rd place.

Pictured are the lads from one of the days offshore with a just a few fish from their catch.

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

First ever experience fishing, and even more exciting that it was at sea, and we could eat what we caught.

Little bit daunted by the fact that me and my mum were inexperienced both with boats and with fishing, but we held our own and caught the same, if not more, than some of the seasoned experts with a little help and banter.

As a day out it was lovely to go out onto the open waters of a coastline that we regularly walk the dog along.

Lessons i have learnt from the day are; to pack sun cream (whatever the weather) wear wellies (whatever the weather) and make sure that all valuables are in a zip pocket (our skipper Jon demonstrated the dangers by loosing his camera to the sea) and probably a good idea to take sickness pills....just incase!

Already looking forward to the next trip (maybe in warmer weather) as i am now clearly and expert "jigger"
