    Report on-board Mistress

    1st week in November

The uptiding has certainly come on with a bang this week following the last big northerly. We have been experiencing some phenominal sport, seeing a good number of double figure cod, most of the catches have had good numbers of fish in the 5lb to 8lb bracket too.

There have been many new PB fish for the anglers onboard Mistress. I cant stress how good a quality the fish are in, all big fat bellies and firm flesh.

Some of the anglers have been taking up to a dozen fish home each for the day.

Im really looking forward to the upcoming Uptide festival, Im pretty confident we could see a fish in the 20's this year. I still have a few spaces left so book on to be in with a chance of winning £1000!

Its a pitty I cant add more than 1 photo to this report as there have so many good fish caught this week.

Remember folks all these fish were caught within a few hundred yards of land, we are usually fishing within 20 minutes of leaving port, there is no need to be flying off over the horizon with fish of this quality right on your door step.

Pictured is local lad Paul Britton with his two best fish of the day, part of his 10 fish haul. Both fish into double figures!!

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

One of my friends from Leeds who fishes with me regularly recently sent me a recipe for some "Thai" fish cakes which he makes.

He told me of this recipe on the boat a couple of weeks ago and said that, whilst most white fish will do for them, cod, ling, pollack etc...... he reckons that pollack is one of the best to use.

On our last trip off last Saturday I managed a lovely pollack weighing 10lb and decided that I would try this method. What a treat!!! They must be the best tasting fish cakes I have ever tried. The flavours are incredible.

I thought it would be good to share this recipe with you guys, so please find below the ingredients and method. Enjoy!!!!

    INGREDIENTS
    FISHCAKES
    1lb pollock fillets
1 tbsp Thai Fish Sauce (Nam Pla)
    1 tbsp Red Curry Paste
1 Kaffir Lime leaf (dried) or 1 strip of lime zest very finely chopped
    1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander
    1 egg
    1 tsp muscovado sugar
    1/2tsp salt
40gm french beans thinly sliced into rounds

    SWEET AND SOUR CUCUMBER SAUCE
    50ml white wine vinegar
    100gms caster sugar
    1+1/2 tbsps water
    2 tsp thai fish sauce
    50gms cucumber very finely diced
25gm carrot and 25gm onion very finely diced
2 red bird eye chillies very finely sliced

    METHOD
For fishcakes: Put all fishcake ingredients into a blender/food processor (except the french beans) and blend until smooth. Then stir in the green beans. Make into about 8 small cakes and shallow fry in about 150m of sunflower oil (or similar flavourless oil) for about 2-3 a side (or until cooked through).
For sauce (make this first): Gently heat the vineger, sugar and water in a small pan until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil and boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and leave to cool. When cool, stir in fish sauce, cucumber, carrot, onion and chillies. Pour into individual bowls so everyone gets their own dipping sauce.

I served them with boiled rice and soy sauce on the side.

Thanks to my mate Derek Wiggins for the recipe.

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

Weather reports all over the place for today, strng wind forcasts doubtfull on getting out. Cancelled some long distance anglers booked in as not fair to them, with our local anglers prepared to come have a go. Wasnt too bad at first with a strong SW wind but turned to a lovely even stronger NE our worst. wasnt long before we thought we were on the seafronts roller coaster, caught a couple of cod, about 30 odd whiting, had a quick move inside to hide again and run inside back home before the tide turned! My thanks to first timers on the High Flyer, Graham for organizing, Shaun , Peter and Rich, and regular Steve, sorry about the wind, heavy downpours and roller coaster ride, least we got out had a go and got a few fish! All the best men, hope to see you again soon. Jon.

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

Todays party was a good bunch of lads first time on the High Flyer, plenty of good banter etc. options given by me and they chose South so we headed into the Roads to be met with a very annoying wind that wasnt forcast but still luckily in our favour. Unfortunately the tide wasnt which slowed the immediate fishing up but we cant help that. No cod showed up for us today, plenty of whiting but not in the usual numbers we have been catching still need a cold spell. Pictured here our group in the dark! Thanks to Andy for organizing the trip, son eddy, with collegues Mark,Peter,Paul,Chris,Craig,Tim,Mel and Jim and also Paul for crewing. Thanks for an enjoyable day, hope to see you soon.

    Report on-board Sea Otter 2

Those double figure cod keep coming what week uptiding here at whitby its great to see fish of this quality litterally a few hundred mtrs from the shore plus we also had a 20lb conger as well uptiding .
Its the start of the uptiding comp next with £1000 up for grabs just an odd space left over the week so its worth a crack remember distance means nothing here at whitby we have had cod onces under 30lb uptiding in the past its just being in the right place what gives you the best results sea -otter 2 catch rates are second to non.

  • 04/11/2012 Fishing Report by Bob Marshall on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

4 Nov 2012 by Bob Marshall

    Report on-board Duke IV

Fine fishing to be had around Ramsgate with good numbers of Thornbacks moving into our area at the moment along with Cod, Whiting and Pout. We just need the weather to calm down to get out there. Bills group on a works outing yesterday had plenty of action with some quality Whiting to go with the Skate. Herring proved to be the bait of choice for the Skate with lug/squid cocktails for the Whiting. To catch the Cod requires large squid or cuttle baits to avoid the attention of the smaller fish, with the Whiting on the baits as soon as they hit bottom or rig one as livebait, always a chance of a large Bass or lunker Cod taking the bait.
The Skate fishing will continue through the winter provided the netters don't hammer them and the Cod fishing should improve until the Sprats arrive in January lifting the Cod off the bottom making them even more difficult to catch.
We will continue our Thursday individuals trips throughout the winter so call to book your place or book Duke IV, 6hrs for just £300 for up to 10 fishing.
