  • 08/04/2011 Fishing Report by Bob Marshall on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

8 Apr 2011 by Bob Marshall

    Report on-board Duke IV

Spring has brought some good fishing to Ramsgate! We still have some quality Cod inshore, also a fair spring run of Codling! Paul from Welling landed a fine Cod of l5lb l2oz aboard Duke IV.
The Skate are making an appearance with good numbers available. Ian landed an 8lb'er and Courtney who came along with her dad on an individuals day aboard Duke IV showed how its done with a Skate and Doggies!
We made our first visit to the wrecks when Sea Angler mag, Shane Pullen and crew turned up to shoot some film for his next fishing video.
Some of the wrecks were quiet with only the odd fish, move on to another wreck and the Cod along with a few Pollack were feeding well on the shad and Sukuma redgill lures we offered!
Ginters group from Barking Essex had a good day out on Duke IV with some nice Thornback Ray and Whiting, also catching our first Smoothound of the year!
Herring is a favoured bait for the Thornies and will also catch the odd Cod and the Whiting love it!
Remember the Rays are here to breed so take care with them and please return the females. These fish are slow growing and don't mature until at least 7 years old and only lay a small number of purse type eggs, so our future sport relies on a good return from these fantastic fish!
The fishing should continue to improve as the water warms, bringing in the Bass and Smoothounds. Skate numbers should peak in May with the Mackerel arriving inshore in June! Still dates available for groups & individuals on Duke IV so please email or call me for more information! Tight lines, Bob.

  • 03/04/2011 Fishing Report by Dave Hunkin on Bessie Vee (Mevagissey, Cornwall)

3 Apr 2011 by Dave Hunkin

    Report on-board Bessie Vee

At the opening of our season on the 2nd April, we were able to catch plenty of mackerel for bait for the day. We had a very successful day fishing a couple of small wrecks around 14 miles from the coast, drifting for ling using baited cod feathers. Tides were too strong for anchoring on wrecks. The biggest ling were up to 20lb, and Marcin's group had over 20 ling to take home with them.
On the 3rd April, with a different group of more experienced anglers, we went off 25 miles to another small wreck where we tried the same, drifting for ling with cod feathers. Again, we had much success, with plenty of ling - the top angler landing eight, ranging from 8 - 18lb; but the best of the day went to Graham, with his 35lb ling - showing that this is the ideal time of year to catch big ling, as it was carrying 8lb roe.

    Report on-board Flamer IV

APRIL 2011 - THE HEAVY WEIGHTS MOVE IN.I must just mention that three of my regular anglers/customers,Paul Milkins,Trevor Curtis and Russell Salmon were all fishing on the back of Flamer IV and collectively they weighed 65 stone. However in the heavy weight fish stakes Russell Salmon came out trumps when he landed an 18Ib Turbot.Russell was using 20Ib class tackle and the successful bait was a fillet of Ammo mackerel.Paul and Trevor also both caught a turbot each but no were near as big as Russell's large flatty.Russell from Somerset had caught very little on his previous trips this year but his patience and persaverance was rewarded.Russell is pictured with his 18 pounder.

APRIL 2011 - FLATTY'S R'US - The Spring run of plaice and turbot has really kicked off now with some excellent results of late.Self confessed Turbot virgin Ian Pratt from Wales is a virgin no more.In successive drifts on the Famous Shambles Bank he caught turbot of 7Ib and 13Ib and was overjoyed with his catch.Ian was using 20Ib class tackle with a flowing trace and the successful bait was a strip of Ammo mackerel.Ian is pictured with his 13 pounder. On the same trip Robert Clowes and his mate Richard from Staffordshire had more than their share of plaice and turbot and realy enjoyed their first experience of flatty fishing out of Weymouth on Flamer IV.
