Report on-board Silver Spray II
We are now into that quiet part of the year where if you are unlucky with the weather you might find a lot of your trips cancelled, which has been the case quite a lot lately. The inshore fishing for whiting and cod tailed off a little early this year, I put this down to a lack of settled weather, January isn’t renowned for being the best month weather wise but it’s been worse than usual. To keep the rods bending I decided to utilize our offshore fishing on the banks, even though you can’t sit it out all day on the stronger tides you can still head out for a couple of hours either side of slack in search of some different species. As you saw in last month’s report the rays and spurdogs were there in abundance and I’m happy to say it was much the same again this month, the brief period between the inshore fishing grinding to a halt and the wrecking for pollack leaves us with just the neap tides to head out to the offshore marks. Best fish in the last couple weeks goes to Gary Holmes with his new boat record undulate ray of 19lb 4oz, the ray took a mackerel bait just after slack water on a rough ground mark 15 miles off.

Even though it’s a bit earlier than usual with two nice days of settled weather this week I decided to get the first couple of wreck trips of the year under my belt. There were plenty of pollack to be had, all of a nice fat healthy stamp due to the numerous shoals of sprats and scad hovering around the wrecks. Whilst fishing a wreck just before slack water we had a big surprise in the form of a new boat record ling. Andy Deacon was fishing half a pout for a conger when the monster took the bait, after fifteen minutes of scrapping with the fish on his 15-20lb class ugly stick it hit the surface. Weighing in at 31lb 4oz it is certainly the biggest ling I’ve seen in my career so far, well done to Andy what a fish!!!UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Silver Spray II

Jon Old (Skipper) really tried hard to get us fish in the boat. He certainly wasn't shy on using his diesel to move us where the fish should be (no bites, we power on), nor shy on hot drinks and biscuits, a true gent who made everyone welcome. A few Whiting were caught (Jon even gave me a Dab he landed). Nothing was spared, brand new hooks from the word go. Jon is the third Skipper I've left the Gt Y harbour with, and he is the one I will be going with next time.

Sunday started very foggy, vis down to 30 feet, bit dodgey for netting so headed the far side of Corton Bank away from boat traffic, shot away only an hour before slack only 2 nets as fog still about. Waited till slack was nearly done as herring rise as this point then quick pull in over the stern which i never do! Resulted in nice lovely big herring as used 2&quarter mesh, 3 boxes in 2 nets not bad! Anchored up in the roads and caught whitting again as we took the fish out and back in for lunch. Lovely little jolly very enjoyable, plenty of skate bait for next month.

Thanks to Dave and James pictured here, if you fancy a herring netting session please email me, can organize a dedicated trip for your party, and hopefully you all go home with a carrier bag full each. We work around the tide so timing is crucial, or for more info ring me on the mobile. -

Headed out today steamed out to 12 mile bank, taking in 2 wreck drifts on the way. No fish at all on either wreck very dissapointing! Just lost leads! As the tide picked up it proved difficult to hold bottom, so beaten back to 8 mile sands, where we still struggled for fish. Only whitting and couple of flats today, lots of decent marks on the sounder, no cod biting today. Plenty of bait fish jumping around us, my thoughts turned to possible spawning weeks where fish go off the feed , no explanation for lack of fish as sounder was full at times?Radio traffic info was that all boats were struggling today.

Fishing Report by Gethyn Owen

Report on-board My Way 2
Fortunately for us, My Ways re-launch earlier this month appears to have coincided with a spell of reasonable weather that has allowed us to sail quite regular. Having only launched 11 days ago, we have sailed on 7 occasions, each day though with greatly varying results.
View Boats Page
Over the weekend of 16th 17th the forecasted wind has shown light southerly winds decreasing, however each day the constant wind speed remained in the high teens, often gusting well over 20mph, undeterred and with shelter from the southerly direction we managed to sail and catch a good number of fish from a variety of species.
The fishing although, consistent for February from Anglesey, remains hard work at times and a number of moves around the bay are required in the day to keep the anglers catching throughout our time afloat. There are a fair number of coalies swimming around Holyhead, with an average size of 2lb. Not the biggest but great sport on light tackle and a welcome change from the ever present dogfish and small whiting, coalfish are not too common neither, so it was nice to see a few lads catch their first coalie with us.
Another first was Tom from Wrexham who managed a first ray by way of a small thornback on a patch of mud not far from Holyhead Breakwater. Fishing was similar to the previous weekend with dogs, whiting and dabs making up the bulk of most anglers hauls with the addition of a few other species such as huss, thornbacks, codling and coalfish making the odd appearance.
By 19th, the weather had settled to barely a ripple on the water and with small tides and light winds we had decided on an early sail and a journey out to Holyhead Deep in search of some early spurdog fishing. Normally we see the odd few this early, but tend to leave our spurdog adventures till the middle of March. However with some of our crew having never caught a spurdog before, our trip had these hard fighting small sharks as our main priority.
Thankfully, we managed to land a few, with the majority going into double figures, Bryn Jones and Ricky Thomas were both able to record their first ever spurdog and Harry Hudson, who’d not caught a spur for a decade or two, managed to snare a couple including the heaviest of the day at 14lb.
Fishing alongside and not directly into a wreck for the spurdog, Ricky also tried a big mackerel bait ledgered on the bottom and managed to tick off another target of his for 2013, a conger eel. It was just a small eel, but satisfying in being a first. Sadly though he did get snapped on later in the day by something a lot bigger!
So far an excellent start to 2013, hopefully good weather and great fishing will bless us all for 2013.

There are some big Pollack being caught along with some Cod, but mostly Pollack.
Kelly went out on her first time sea fishing and caught 3 Pollack around 13lb and 1 Cod at 8lb. We have been mainly drifting and the the sidewinder shads and red head lures seem to be producing some good catches.
One day when we weren't fishing, we were doing some drug running! - for the latest DVD of 'The fall of the Essex boys', that was also a great day. Check out the DVD as it has just been released, some good footage of the boat.
